Review A Win’s A Win - Freo by Six In The ‘Away’ Game vs North

Wasn’t the best game from Erasmus - but was ok. I would keep him in for now but pressure will come from JOM and NOD. Sharp has be under the most pressure - also under pressure from the same two players. Sharp was slightly better than last game but only marginally. Really struggles in the wet. He did pull off a couple of exiting d50 kicks.

JOM after not pulling up good enough to play this week needs a run with Peel.

My ins this week would be:
  • Pearce or McDonald > Draper
  • Dudley > Switta

I’d also be tempted to pull the trigger on NOD > Sharp. They seemed to be giving NOD a few rests on the bench in the 2nd half, which makes me think they were keeping him somewhat fresh for the shorter break.

If Darcy needs a rest then play the extra midfielder, which would be either NOD or JOM.
I would like to see O'Driscoll come back in

Oh well another hoodoo broken this year - the post-bye blues following on from conquering wet-weather footy. Maybe one day, we'll even play well in a prime-time slot? Or perhaps when there's expectations and pressure placed on us, we might actually step up to the plate?

I understand people's misery - but we are the youngest team on average this year, synergy/momentum mean everything and this may as well have been the first game of the year.

The injuries are getting annoying in a death-by-a-thousand-cuts way. There's the regular ones like Darcy/Pearce/Young but there's a bunch of dicky ones like Switta after he's finally hit peak form again, Cooper Simpson after he makes an immediate impact off half-back, and a bunch of others that aren't game-changers but they constantly mess with our flow.

Both Treacy/Amiss not kicking goals is a problem - you can't have your primary two key forwards failing to convert on a regular basis, despite their age. It's fantastic to see Voss reestablish himself as a footy player, but we'll need to see more.

Selection has been bordering on conservative too - Dudley should have been straight back in and NOD just needs to be playing. Erasmus sub was nonsense and we all know where it's leading to. Banfield - that tackle in the goal square could've turned the game on its head it's lucky be wasn't pinged. Why... Why he is just an automatic in every week, he survives time and time again and he's just not an impact player. There's 4-5 who could be playing ahead of him. O'mac played two brilliant games for us and we dropped him and keep Draper in who's utterly bereft of confidence right now. There's every reason to be daring at the selection table but JL won't have it if we're eking out wins.

This team has the energy, innovation and natural talent to become a very special, very unique outfit. There's every reason for us to evolve into one of the most exciting teams to watch in the AFL. With JL, I wonder if it's not what he sees and does with the team that's the issue, it's what he doesn't see and doesn't do that prevents us from being truly brilliant.

Yeah we're not making finals with this sort of effort under any sort of pressure. Legitimately closer to a bottom 4 team than a Top 4 side

North's pressure rating was up near 240 for a while there. They threw everything at us and if we kicked straight it wouldn't have been an issue.

I hope we didn't gamble the game result to preserve our legs for a five day break.

Treacy was massive. Marking everything before that final one at the end.

We moved the ball fast for about ten mins in the second quarter and tore them apart, the rest of the game the anchor sign was up and we kicked sideways. It was not pleasant to watch at the ground and Sharp got way too much of the ball for us not going direct enough.

Won the game. Banked the points. That's going to have to do.

Felt like the whistle lifted for North in the last, more specifically nothing was a free for us and anything close to a free was for them.

I said it elsewhere but I think the AFL shouldn't punish the player trying to make something happen, like Bolton, when he takes the ball and tries a sidestep into an immediate tackle - holding the ball but a defender takes possession and doesn't try to keep the ball moving and it's a ball up. It seems counter to what the AFL want the game to look like.

Voss is great fun.

You're really having a crack at Banners?!? he has been playing really well the past few weeks

I don't like that we have a short break and it's been a rainy game. If I were an essendon supporter that's exactly what I'd want for us. Coming up against a bashed around tired side.
although Essendon got flogged by Geelong today and have to fly to Perth - we have no excuses

The Jye Amiss missed kick at goal in the 4th when they had a run of 2 or 3 goals on us was just downright shocking.
That was simply unforgivable for a guy whose primary job is to kick routine goals. It not like he’s running around doing a load of other work too.

That round the corner kick from 15-20 meters out on your stronger side (which Jye was on) has become as straightforward as shelling peas for the top line AFL forwards nowadays. It’s like a 4 foot put in golf for a pro player with no break.
When I think of other good teams - players like Cameron, Mihocek, Elliot, Hogan, Tex Walker, even Mabior Chol - when key moments like that arrive in their big games - they are almost never missing that shot. 98 times out of 100 it would be kicked by any of those players in that scenario.

I don’t actually know what the solution is with Jye now. As far as I’m concerned he’s going backwards and was a much better footballer in 2023 than he is today in 2025. I’m not sure what that says about him or the footy club and its development of him.

I think he’s got mental problems with the game at the moment, and I’m also wondering if he’s got talent/ability question marks too at this point?
Let’s be brutally honest here - Patrick Voss is a long way ahead of Amiss right now.

it was hard to digest when you saw the accuracy of players like Larkey

Can't agree with this sorry. It's actually a luxury that if Amiss / Treacy / Voss play - we can rely on one of them to stand up (when it comes to scoring). There was a point in time where Amiss was ahead of everyone. And then Treacy was ahead of Amiss. Now Voss is apparently better than both. This is just what development and gaining experience looks like.

If you want everyone to be perfect and firing on all cylinders, lets wait another 5 years when our forward combination are all actually over the age of 25 like some of the best that are roaming around in the competition now.

Drapers ability to constantly give away unnecessary free kicks will cause me more grey hairs soon.

I say this weekly, but Amiss........could drop him for OMac and lose nothing. Honestly........
Is Omac still playing in the forward line for Peel as he played back a couple of weeks ago.

Horrific watching experience aside, I thought most of the defence was excellent, Ryan and Cox in particular. I do think Pearce for Draper is a monumental upgrade though and cant wait to get him back out there.

I think Davies would have been better the last few weeks. He was in better form as well. If Pearce isn't back this week, Davies or OMac in would be good.

God you lot are a sour bunch. Three weeks of good footy and we win after the bye but it’s this win that proves who we really are not the wins away to GC and Giants
Me thinks many have been drinking turpentine tonight.
But in all honesty, it was one we almost threw away.
But four points is better than none. Good thing, we are winning the close games.
I doubt the legitimacy of some of our alleged supporters.

Pretty happy with that to be honest

Yeah we were mediocre

But we won a close game off the bye, 4 wins in a row. Can't play like we did vs gold coast every week, we steeled ourselves in the last 5 mins and won
At last, a common sense post. I applaud you.👏👏👏👏
