Which is why its so hard to watch this yearIMO it's mental.
Just learning how to win again.
Trusting process and team mates.
Today was a step in the right direction in a team sense.
We spend a lot of time talking about game styles, defensive set up, contested possession/clearances, tackles ,run and carry etc but in many ways player availability is the key. What a difference a week makes, we are all struggling to work out who makes way for retuning players after the bye.
Key takeaways for me:
- Often it’s just the cattle available - our defence hasn’t looked that solid all year
He did shut down Prestia right from the start of the second quarter. Prestia had had possession numbers in the teens in the first quarter, and was the main reason why Richmond had had so much territorial advantage early in the game.
I’ve seen Rowbottom play better games from an offensive perspective, but in the context of the season (the previous two weeks) and the game, he did exactly what we needed from the start of the second quarter onwards.
Wouldn't you prefer he got the ball?
We may a s well play a UFC or jujitsu guy
Rowbottom so over rated on here.
Good teams still going to run all over us and get ready for more ten goals losses.

Great point on the suspensions. I reckon if those didn’t happen, we are looking at finals as a decent possibility. The Amartey one in particular hurt us.We spend a lot of time talking about game styles, defensive set up, contested possession/clearances, tackles ,run and carry etc but in many ways player availability is the key.
Simplistic sure, but get Cunningham,Mills and Wicks back and suddenly our defence looks a lot better.
Get Gulden delivering the ball I50 to a fwd line with Amartey and Papley in it, then I'm tipping we'll look a lot better at that end as well.
Guys like Corey Warner, Bice and Cleary have had a good run of games.
Hopefully that will hold them in good stead into the future, but at this point of time with a full(ish) list they will become depth.
Going into your depth to replace 2 or 3 players short term is doable, but longer term absences are harder to cover.
Suspensions in particular have hit us hard (and that is on the players involved).
But it means we have basically been unable to get any continuity and that allayed with longer term injuries, a new coach with perhaps different messaging and possibly a carryover from the GF has meant a disappointing start to the season.
After the bye hopefully we'll have close to a full strength team and IMO it's at that point when we can properly start to judge this season.
And yes I acknowledge it may not change and even if it does it may be too late, but hey I'm a glass half full sort of guy.![]()
I agree with many of your observations. Getting a win was a relief but Richmond were awful after quarter time (though not as bad as us last week) and we were many levels of sparkle down from this time last year.Richmond were as shit as they have been all year , we were as good as we have been though. Our Skipper played down back and cunners and not a butcher.
Would I tip us to beat port in two weeks ? no
Not to pick on Rowwy all
morning but shutting a prestia down is easy when his whole team is getting killed for instance.
Mclean won't get away with dropping every mark etc
But we won and we won't lose during the bye so ****ing enjoy it. At least they had a ****en genuine crack yesterday they didn't win by limping around and Heeney carrying them.
Tigers brought good pressure in the first. I think we did better (than in the last fortnight) absorbing it and then ramping up our own in the second and beyond. The reality is Tigers are a bottom 3 side and the other 14 teams are more capable of keeping pressure on for longer and responding when we lift. So yesterday was a good start but PA in Adelaide will be a much better gauge of our level of improvement.I agree with many of your observations. Getting a win was a relief but Richmond were awful after quarter time (though not as bad as us last week) and we were many levels of sparkle down from this time last year.
I put value on Rowbum shutting down Prestia because he (Prestia) was the first quarter source of Richmond’s possessions. I was surprised at how ineffectual Hopper and Taranto were at stepping up in the midfield once Prestia had been quelled.
Agree. I feel like picking him is just doubling down on a mistake.Adams imo is well beyond cooked to
Flair is one thing, I think his work rate is too discretionary. We need him to be 100% these things .I watched him too and he's one of those players that has that flair that we've been missing ..to me it's flair to you it's ho hum. I was enjoying his skillet and run and defensively he wasn't too shabby that doesn't necessarily mean tackles but just intercepting the ball and other shut-down ways.
I'd agree with this except I'd bring Errol and Ollie in for Co Warner and Bice, with Bice dropping into sub role. Amartey for Hanily definitely.Be keeping it simple next game.
Errol hopefully back in for Bice or Co Warner
Amartey back into the forward line with Hanily out
Florent in for Adams as the sub
Keep the back 7 as it was this week, which means if Roberts comes back, it has to be in Bice or Co Warners role, otherwise through the 2s
I think you've forgotten (or probably blanked out) this time two years ago - it is amazing how similar this season is running in comparison to 2023.Surely it cant of been that bad.. we havent been a rabble for the past 5 years or so
We won 20+ games last year lol
Lloyd was fine yesterday. Adams has lost his zip. Not in the best 23.Adams subbed on when it was done and was solid enough, not sure why it proved anything definitive. He was the form VFL mid, why is he out
Lloyd’s a way bigger problem
Lloyd's first half was horrificLloyd was fine yesterday. Adams has lost his zip. Not in the best 23.
This in spades. This follows on from previous horrific games from Lloydy, he also doesn't provide any quick run and likes to hold it up before kicking it long down the line
I'm less bothered by his ball use (he's got 21 mates where that's concerned), and more disappointed by the lack of run, as you say. In the QF last year, Gulden was well-held & McInerney was underdone. Lloyd really stepped up and became the main wingman for us, just constantly on the move and taking the game on. We've really needed him to do that this year and he just hasn't done it at all, but worse, he's not even really showed the endeavour to try.Lloyd's first half was horrific
11 touches at 45% DE as a winger is terrible especially when he has 6 TOs more than double anyone else on the ground in that time.
Feel like his numbers were puffed up by the late kick to kick as his last quarter he had 7 touches at 100% mostly in the defensive half (therefore involved in the kick to kick)
This follows on from previous horrific games from Lloydy, he also doesn't provide any quick run and likes to hold it up before kicking it long down the line
Yep, very apt description. He seems to have lost all his footy nous. He's frustrating the hell out of me this season. This in spades.
Its like watching a sloth play football at times.
To the point that I'd even say I'd play Bice off the wing and dropping Lloyd if we don't drop both of themYep, very apt description. He seems to have lost all his footy nous. He's frustrating the hell out of me this season.
