We won't be making 5 changes to a winning side and McInerney has been more than fine this year.

Bice also had his best game in weeks so won't be getting dropped.

As for the players you listed

Clearly - Would love to see him in the team, but extended time in the midfield at VFL currently will be great for his development.

Dattoli - Coming off a serious injury, didn't rack it up at VFL level today, allow him to develop his game at his own pace, his going to be good but there is no rush. (Also stress related back injuries need rest after return, the bye has come up at a great time).

Gulden - Depending on fitness, not sure if his straight back in side or has a half in VFL first, from what Cox has said he may not be back immediately.

Roberts - Yeah probably comes back in.

Fox - Will need more game time in VFL first.

Rowbottom is a intensity/tackling machine but doesnt offer anything else so if his pressure is down he struggles to get into the contest.

he had 5 touches with 3 turnovers and 2 tackles to half time

What a difference a week makes, we are all struggling to work out who makes way for retuning players after the bye.

Key takeaways for me:
  • Often it’s just the cattle available - our defence hasn’t looked that solid all year
  • I’m hard on Mills but he was good today. I’m hopeful he can turn my opinion of him (would still like to see co-captains next year)
  • Cunningham take a bow. Out for a good chunk, came back earlier than planned, and immediately made an impact. We missed him.
  • Francis and Campbell need to develop that sense of entitlement that good forwards have. They both almost looked guilty for taking a shot at goal.
  • I had a crack at JMac for a poor tackle attempt but overall like what he gave. He needs consistent time to keep improving. He belongs.
  • Melican must be our most underrated player. I love the way he goes about it.
  • I though McLean competed well. He brought a lot of ball to ground was 3rd and 4th back. It will be nice to have McLean and Amartey together with Francis as the leading tall.

Cox must have told him to tackle tackle and tackle some more at half time to have 12 in a half is surely up there in terms of a record

Absolutely he blitzed it after the break

I was for a long time very dismissive of Melican especially in relation to giving players on the lead too much space andthinking his deision making was horrendous - i wont forgive the crazy non decision to go to heeney in the final against the giants in 2021. But i have to say when hes going well hes pretty bloody effective and hes going well this year. but for the suspension i would have thought he would have been leading the bnf

I actually thought he was one of the best out there....we must be watching different games. He's so crucial to our attack...just.from memory two great intercepts of handballs when the tiges were out. Intelligent handballs under players. Better kicking. He's also a great team mate in terms of enthusiasm and energy to the rest of the team. I don't know what his kms are but he covers a lot of ground. It's hard to be consistent with injury and suspension
He isn’t operating anywhere hear his best…watched him today pretty close, I just think he has some good moments but he can switch off and go half paced when he should go harder. He has a lot of ho hum possessions. Needs to go harder at the pill.

Notes from the Game

- aside from some ridiculous ruck free kicks given in the first quarter, Grundy was far and away the best player on the ground.

- there was a period in the third quarter in our forward 50, felt like it was 5 minutes of stoppage after stoppage, and tackle after tackle. You could see and hear the players getting up each other after each effort and laid tackle, it was far cry from the arguing and pointing over the last couple of weeks

- Jordan and McCartin played there roles to perfection

- Cunningham slotting back into that role was so handy, and as someone else said earlier, the back 7 of Melican, McCartin, Rampe, Mills, Cunningham, Wicks and Blakey just looks so much more assured.

- the main negative was the intercept marks from the opposition, between Balta, Broad, Brown and Miller they would have had plenty, and you can see why we persist with the three tall forwards.

I watched him too and he's one of those players that has that flair that we've been missing ..to me it's flair to you it's ho hum. I was enjoying his skillet and run and defensively he wasn't too shabby that doesn't necessarily mean tackles but just intercepting the ball and other shut-down ways.

We're a different team when Blakey gets off the chain. Mills playing at HB a big contributor to that. Blakey 31 kicks (3 HB), 916 metres gained. Yes! His biggest game of the year.

Nice to get the win but especially to keep them to 4 goals and almost a clean sheet after Q1. I know it's a developing team but those are precisely the teams we should be putting to the sword.

We haven't had many highlights this year but Grundy's roved goal is definitely one. His celebration was also hilarious --- Papleysque.

Hanily looked lost out there was the only real negative , not sure he holds a spot , unless you make the case you need more than a week
Cleary was good in the bits of the vfl I saw today

Dont understand Jmac criticism and yet rowbottom getting all this praise. Yeah he accumulates tackles, cool. But first instict is to hack kick it forward to no advantage. Rowbottom first centre clearance, just bangs it on the boot without looking despite having team-mates in support. Also another clearance in the first quarter in the pocket has blakey running through unmanned, hack kicks it across his body to no one, and copped a spray from blakey.

Jmac gets clearances and uses outside players.

JMac has had a much better 2 weeks since coming back from suspension than he was beforehand imo.

But don't think you can really compared them as they play different styles, to the point that i'd be more concerned if JMac had worse ball use than Rowbottom

9 more of them and we should make the 8. Seriously though, a decent win but we are far off it this year. Grundy had a blinder, time for Corey to have a spell.
Corey made 3 very selfish decisions yesterday that were really iconic of the slump this team is in.
The worst being Sheldrick running past him wide open to run inside 50. He decided to try burn his opponent, take a bounce and got caught holding the ball.
Infuriating.

Wouldn't you prefer he got the ball?

We may a s well play a UFC or jujitsu guy

Rowbottom so over rated on here.

Good teams still going to run all over us and get ready for more ten goals losses.
If oppo players find that whenever they get the ball they are tackled by one of our players we will be getting plenty of ball and they will be ****ed in the head.

He did shut down Prestia right from the start of the second quarter. Prestia had had possession numbers in the teens in the first quarter, and was the main reason why Richmond had had so much territorial advantage early in the game.

I’ve seen Rowbottom play better games from an offensive perspective, but in the context of the season (the previous two weeks) and the game, he did exactly what we needed from the start of the second quarter onwards.
