Early days yet, but the trade deal struck between Port and the Bulldogs (and Melbourne) which saw Brett Montgomery and Matthew Bishop head for Port while Nathan Eagleton went to the Bulldogs looks like working out well for both clubs.
Eagleton had a good first up game against Hawthorn and Montgomery had plenty of the ball for Port (no goals though) while Bishop looks like a handy versatile tall.
I don't think Port will miss Eagleton too much. Sure, when he's firing he's very good, but Matthew Bode looks ready to play a big role on the ball and around the goals this year, Danny Morton coming back is like a new recruit and Roger James is also a quality player who will press for more games. Port's problem is going to be who to leave out amongst all its on-ballers.
Matthew Bishop is the same sort of player as the unfairly maligned Brett Chalmers, but younger and hopefully less injury prone.
No wonder Mark Williams is happy with the outcome!
PS - I don't know what Melbourne got in return for Bishop, a higher draft pick I think.
