Early days yet, but the trade deal struck between Port and the Bulldogs (and Melbourne) which saw Brett Montgomery and Matthew Bishop head for Port while Nathan Eagleton went to the Bulldogs looks like working out well for both clubs.

Eagleton had a good first up game against Hawthorn and Montgomery had plenty of the ball for Port (no goals though) while Bishop looks like a handy versatile tall.

I don't think Port will miss Eagleton too much. Sure, when he's firing he's very good, but Matthew Bode looks ready to play a big role on the ball and around the goals this year, Danny Morton coming back is like a new recruit and Roger James is also a quality player who will press for more games. Port's problem is going to be who to leave out amongst all its on-ballers.

Matthew Bishop is the same sort of player as the unfairly maligned Brett Chalmers, but younger and hopefully less injury prone.

No wonder Mark Williams is happy with the outcome!

PS - I don't know what Melbourne got in return for Bishop, a higher draft pick I think.

Interesting to see you're bringing up all these old threads, Asguardian.

How ironic was it that both Eagleton and Montgomery both had heart problems with the Power! Something in the water at Alberton?

I don't like talking about this trade.

Worked out great for Port. You also got a draft pick (from us

) resulting in picking up the promising Brett Guerra (sp?). Melbourne are laughing too.

For us? An absolute disaster. Before I go on- I am a HUGE fan of Nathan Eagleton and the class, skill and speed he has brought/ will provide in the future (optimistically 8-10 years). But draft picks plus two top 18 players??? Monty- winner of Port's B&F- Powell- 4th in Melbourne's B&F!
Tells you something about our apparent "lack of playing stocks" when two middle tier players at our club do so well at others (and through Leon Cameron in that bunch too!).

The club's reasoning?? Age?!?!!?!
Montgomery- Ok- 27- can see the logic behind it.

But Powell?? Oh yeah- over the hill he was- 22-23- and constantly improving- only would have had 8 years in him- max- yeah recruiting/trading department? The ONLY bloke the club had managed to develop in the past 3 years- "hey- lets get rid of him"!

When do clubs get rid of two consistent 22 gamers and draft picks for a player who was in the SANFL due to poor form just the year before? Anyway- Nathan had a solid year this year and he should do well in the future..... as will Brett and Stephen

.

Asguardian- Yeah go on- rub it in- You just brang this topic back up just to piss us doggies supporters off didn't ya?

Sorry Westy 'ol boy, not trying to be a troll. I really believe this deal will be remembered as a win/win situation, maybe though Port will win a bit more than the Bulldogs staff thought we would.

Anyway, Eagleton will prove to be a fine player, and a fine ambassador, for the Bulldogs given time.

What you talkin' about, As? I was only being friendly.... I wasn't having a cheap shot at anyone. It IS strange they both had problems ... Maybe you're being a little paranoid.

Okay Crow54

I'll assume then the comment about "something in the water at Alberton?" was not a cheap shot if you insist it wasn't.

Regarding the old posts, I was looking at the history of how this site had grown, seeing who was here at the beginning, who has stuck around, and others I might know but who are no longer here, eg Power Mad, and Senor Skase. Anyway, some of the threads were relevent, and others was interesting to view with the aid of a seasons knowledge, such as this thread, which shows how good a win/win trade can really turn out

The deal was certainly a good one for the P-p-p-power but I'm still amazed that the Dogs let go some fine players for little return.

Brett Chalmers was fairly maligned!

Well last year when we got eagleton I was actually really pleased! I thought, if we couldn't get Colbert, Eagleton was a great result. In the 1999 season, Powell had a very good year but I don't think he has the same potential as Eagleton. Also Monty didn't have a good year in 99.

I was probably still annoyed about the semi final loss and didn't really mind that we just lost 2 good players. At the time it was popular thought that we (the bulldogs) needed changes if we were to ever take the next step and make the GF.

However, NOW i'm wondering if it was such a great trade, with Powell and Monty staring at their new clubs. Meanwhile Eagleton had an average year. It seams that we may have given up TOO much.

Still, Eagleton could be an excellent player and this time next year i'll be saying it was a great trade again!

I really think Eagleton should play in the midfield more...
