..worrying in that the saints players didnt look too disappointed in losing tonight. Not a good sign, maybe u are getting used to it? (that wasnt a snipe at u guys).

u REALLY should have won.

I didn't notice that SS11 but I did hear Spider on the radio after the game he seemed pretty dejected. I think the players are hurting quite badly and I hope that is the case.

I'm still at a loss as to why we didn't the game. To have so many more possessions and at least 15 - 20 more inside 50's (I haven't seen any stats, just from my observations at the game), we should have won. But even worse in my opinion was the fact that the players worked their arses off all night and then just stopped dead at the 23 minute mark of the last quarter.

I could have sworn Ken Judge was coaching the hawks tonight in reference to their flooding tactics. Yet I don't have a problem with that because it is up to the opposition side to counter it. Also, the pace at which Hawthorn transferred the ball from defence into their open forward line killed us.

I heard a little on MMM after the game and they seemed to think that we should be very disappointed and threw away a game where we were practically over the line and I agree with that. I do think Hawthorn's confidence is sky high and they know how to win. We on the other hand don't know how to win and panicked. That's why all teams near the bottom need to win the close ones because we went close to a lot of good sides last year, faded late in the match and lost, and then began to get thumped by opponents when confidence hit rock bottom.

This is definitely not an excuse but we have been decimated by injuries. Believe it or not, we only had the opportunity of selecting from 6 fit players for this weeks game. Having said that, the longest amount of time any of our injured players are expected to be out for is 4-5 weeks. Harvey and Thompson were a huge loss in the midfield and even Aussie Jones who had averaged 25 possessions over the past 2 weeks was missed. The thing that rubbed salt into the wounds was that Aussie's good mate (and saints enemy) Joel Smith played exactly the same role and was best on ground.

To say I'm pretty shattered at the moment is an understatement. Looks like our magnificent win/loss record from the middle of 1999 will continue.

We can't even field a side.

Injuries:
Andrew Thompson
Austinn Jones
Tony Delaney
Craig Callaghan
Nick Riewoldt
Steven Lawrence
Justin Plapp
Jason Cripps
Chad Davis
Matthew Young
Damien Ryan
Jason Traianidis
Robert Harvey

Not sure on:
James Begley
Justin Koschitzke

That leaves 22 fit men, heaven forbid someone tears another F**king hamstring.

Savatage,

I didn't want to bring up the injuries because it would seem like I was making excuses. We put ourselves in a winning position and lost and we can't forget that fact.

But looking at that injury list, that is scary. No doubt some player will have a MRI scan on Monday or Tuesday and find that despite finishing the game, they had torn a hammy and will be out for a few weeks (ie Max and Aussie)

We have the two vacancies on our list, perhaps we will need to promote one of our rookies to field a side. ;)

I'm not sure about the status of a few of the injuries, such as Thomson's, Harvey's and Callaghan's hamstrings for one, but I'm sure we will get a few back from that list.

From tonight, I think Begley may be OK and could be right for next week. Delaney on the other hand looks to have damaged the quad muscle that has caused him so much grief before joining us.

By all means AFL, keep reducing the team lists each year.

We'll be lucky to name 3 emergencies this week Sainter.

The only players that can come back from that list are:
Chad Davis
Robert Harvey (which may be a rush job)

Life's pretty tough at the moment.

Scared to win?

Out on the field when the Saints were up by 7 - the vibe out there was almost like confusion. The game plan of St. Mal's is starting to really sink in, and the bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad habbits of Tim Watson are almost out of their system. I don't think Malcolm has given them much advice on how to finish off a team or hold on to a close one. But fair enough, why would he worry about that when the team finished on the bottom last year. There is plenty of games to go and with such an even competition I'm confident that a finals spot is still a realistic goal.

I have to agree with you guys, i though that the Saints probably deserved that game but we have now won 3 games that we probably didn't deserve (Collingwood, Adelaide & St Kilda) You will find that almost all the teams that play Hawthorn go inside 50 more than us, but we do flood back and then run hard the other way to create, thats why we take so many marks. I was sitting right near the St Kilda race and they looked very dejected to me. I actually clapped them off because i thought they were fantastic considering all the injuries.

GoldenBear, the talent is probably there for you guys to make the finals BUT i think you have put yourself to far behind the 8-ball to make it this year, i think anywhere above 11th would be good considering the poor start.

Thanks Chris_23, I appreciate your post.

I am more concerned about week to week improvement rather than finals for this season, it's going to take a while yet to get rid of the bad habits.

Good signs are there, it's still very hard to take ANOTHER loss...

i'm not sure when you saw them ss11 but from good sources i heard they were shattered. to have been in a winning position towards the end of the game and then just roll over and play dead, for the third time this season, was extremely disappointing.

savatage and sainter, we do have a lot of injuries which would have made a win all the more sweet. at least injuries allow us to have a look at a few others on the list like troy schwarze for example. i'm sure if we could settle our best (or near best) side for a few weeks we would rattle off a few wins but these bloody injuries are stopping that.

if we put aside the fact that we lost, a positive trend that has developed over the last 3 weeks is that the workload is being shared more evenly over the whole team. more players are getting there hands on the footy. if we can minimise those costly turn overs we will start to hurt sides on the score board. everitt is back in the ruck where he belongs and looks to be finding some form, he killed them out of the middle. hall and milne have added a bit of fire power up front and begley finally looks to have stepped up.

burkey plays 300 this week, if they can't get up for him i'll be shattered.

Chris has beaten me to it. Was going to point out that this season we are often beaten in inside 50's. Our half back line so strong though that we are more likely to create goals from there than the middle.

No doubt the Saints were undermanned and gave us a real fright but we came away with it when the game was on the line. I don't care how 'lucky' they are, I'll take these wins every time ;)

I still think you guys are playing better footy than I have seen from the Saints for quite some time.

You are right Elt, the Hawks got the win and that is really the bottom line. The Saints were impressive considering they were undermanned and I am confident they will win more than they lose this year. If so mabye a final eight side beckons.
I dont believe the Hawks played badly as some critics have stated. They were killed out of the middle and had to mount most of their attacks from CHB or deeper in defence. This is why the Saints cant use being undermanned as an excuse. Our midfielders had first use of the ball all night (except for the last five minutes)
I was impressed with the Hawks movement of the ball and the space they created. They may have missed quite a few set shots but they were forced to lead wide and were on acute angles.
All in all a good game and the Hawks are looking good. A big test in a couple of weeks against the Bombers. I would expect the Hawks to be in trouble if the Bombers win the same amount of ball out of the middle as the Saints.
One point of interest. I was glad to see and hear only a couple of half hearted boos when Joel Smith got the ball. The Hawks picked him up when his knee was shot and are now reaping the benefits.
He is NOT a traitor as some Saint hotheads like to portray him as, although the way he played on Saturday night, I wish he was injured and not played. He was terrific.

I was out of Melbourne for the weekend so had to make do with tv but on tele he seemed to get booed for every possession. I found it strange considering, as you say, we got him when his knee was buggered. Once again Bohdan has worked his magic. He has been great so far this year. His run and skills off half back have given us an extra dimension.

When Joel Smith did his knee late in 1997, it pretty much shattered the whole club. After beating Collingwood, the team hardly even sung the song. The club vowed to go all the way and dedicate the season to him.

As we know, we fell just short.

At the end of the season, we had 21 uncontracted players. Many players suddenly found their market value increase substantially. In the end, the only people to leave were Joel and Jamie Shanahan.

Reading our club magazine the next year, Stan Alves was devastated to lose Smith. He was the number 5 selection in the 1994/95 (one of them) and the club had placed a lot of faith in him. There was no doubt at all that the club were going to stand by him 100%.

However Hawthorn jumped in with a huge offer and it was too much for him to refuse. The knee injury was irrelevant. St Kilda was always going to look after the kid but an opposition club offered more money and he took it. It's as simple as that. At the time we had a very young squad and just lost a Grand Final. There was no way of knowing how things would go downhill.

As we have seen with the recent Colbert and Hamill situations, clubs (and supporters) hate to see young players that they recruited and developed suddenly leave the club for more money. Of course there were different circumstances with each of the case but at the end of the day, money talks.

I hope Joel Smith can have a great career. However if I said that the bitterness of his depature doesn't still linger amongst many of our supporters (including myself), I would be lying.
