I don’t buy the clumsy argument, as the AFL has established that players have a duty of care to each other.

While I don’t think he meant it at all, I’m not really sure what he was trying to do. It was not a legitimate tackle attempt, and it wasn’t really the spot where you would be trying to tap/hit the ball away. In any case, swinging your arm like that near a player is reckless, there’s no way around that, and unfortunately, because the contact was high and severe, he gets a suspension.

It sounds harsh, because it’s a split second thing, but Sparrow suffered a concussion because of Xerri’s action, which wasn’t really a reasonable one.
