The Alliance of American Football begins play in February, less than six months from now. The spring league has announced the names of another 105 players for its eight teams. The AAF previously announced 100 players under contract.

Highlights of the latest additions include receiver Stephen Hill (Atlanta), a former second-round pick of the Jets, linebacker Deontae Skinner (Birmingham), who played for multiple NFL teams, quarterback Zach Mettenberger (Memphis), running back Storm Johnson (Orlando), running back Daryl Richardson (San Antonio), and running back Khiry Robinson (San Antonio).

All players currently under contract with the AAF are eligible to be signed by an NFL team. With rosters maxed out at 90, however, and with each of those players already not in a training camp, the chances of getting a phone call are slim.

More AAF players surely will be added when the NFL’s rosters shrink from 90 to 53 per team, flooding the market with guys who still want to play football.

Rules
  • Teams will have 50 players on each roster, with some selected by a territorial draft.[5]
  • Telecasts will feature no television timeouts and 60 percent fewer commercials, with the league aiming for an approximate real-time game length of 150 minutes, down from just over 180 in the NFL.[5][13]
  • All teams must attempt two-point conversions after each touchdown; there will be no extra point kicks.[13]
  • There will be no kickoffs; all possessions will begin on each team's own 25-yard line, the same as touchbacks in the NFL and NCAA. In lieu of an onside kick, a team can keep possession of the ball by attempting a scrimmage play from their own 35-yard line and gaining at least 10 yards.[13][1]
  • The play clock will run only 30 seconds, 10 seconds shorter than in the NFL.[13]
  • Two coach's challenges per team are the only replays; no challenges in last two minutes of either half nor any overtime period, as they are automatic.[13]
  • Outside organizations will handle head-safety protocols.[4]

It's a good move, the NFL has lacked a feeder league since the World League folded, managing to turn out some reasonable players in the process.

I'm going for Birmingham, solely because their name doesn't go behind a building/mountain.

A well-traveled tailback is going back to the state where his football career hit its peak.

Former Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson returns to Alabama, joining the Birmingham franchise of the Alliance for American Football. The upstart spring league announced the looming move on Wednesday.

The third overall pick in the 2012 draft, Richardson rushed for 950 yards as a rookie. The Browns sent him to the Colts for a first-round pick during the 2013 season. After a pair of unimpressive campaigns in Indianapolis, Richardson washed out of the NFL, with shots of espresso in various cities in multiple leagues.

Richardson, who has returned to Tuscaloosa to practice with his college program, will now be in Alabama again, getting one last chance to become the kind of performer at the professional level he never has been.

Christian Hackenberg heads to the AAF

The Alliance of American Football will be holding a draft to allocate quarterbacks to the league’s eight teams later this month and Christian Hackenberg is going to be a part of it.

The AAF, which will start play for its inaugural season in February, announced a slew of new player signings on Friday and Hackenberg is on the list. The 2016 Jets second-round pick was traded to the Raiders in the offseason and got released less than a month later. He’s since spent time with the Eagles and Bengals, but lost his spot on the Bengals practice squad earlier this week.

Hackenberg isn’t the only familiar name on the list of new AAF signings. Former Packers and Colts quarterback Scott Tolzien will also be headed to the new league and, unlike Hackenberg, has NFL starting experience.

Safety Rahim Moore, linebacker Steven Johnson, tight end Wes Saxton and wide receiver DeMarcus Ayers are others with NFL experience who were included on Friday’s list of signings.

The new Alliance of American Football allocated 32 quarterbacks Tuesday night for its inaugural 2019 season, including former NFL notables Christian Hackenberg, Scott Tolzien and Zach Mettenberger.

The league, which begins play Feb. 9, gave its eight teams the option to protect a quarterback with geographic ties to the franchise -- or pick someone else in the first round. The first player to be allocated was Josh Johnson, who went to the San Diego Fleet. Hackenberg and Mettenberger went to the Memphis Express, while Tolzien was drafted by the Birmingham Iron.

The AAF, co-founded by television executive Charlie Ebersol and Pro Football Hall of Fame general manager Bill Polian, views itself as a spring league that can feed fan interest once the NFL season is over. Polian hired a series of high-profile former NFL coaches, including Steve Spurrier (Orlando Apollos), Mike Martz (San Diego), Brad Childress (Atlanta Legends) and Mike Singletary (Memphis).

Other quarterbacks to be drafted or protected Tuesday night included former University of Georgia star Aaron Murray (Atlanta), former NFL backup Stephen Morris (Orlando), former New York Jets backup Matt Simms (Atlanta) and B.J. Daniels (Salt Lake Stallions), who spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans.
