I think our form is solid (did what we had to do in the 2nd half, clearly just going through the motions until the last few mins, when our intensity raised about 3 levels, to ensure the win), but these injuries hurt in a big way. Especially the Clark one, on top of Jones being out. Billings we could cover with Wood. Until he gets injured!

Will probably be another year where we get games into guys that we ideally wouldn’t have wanted to (good for the future, but not so much this year) and we finish mid-table or so.

We don’t have enough elite talent to be able to withstand being smashed with injuries, as we saw last year.

Really really need to win in rounds 1 and 4, then hopefully get some troops back.

Flat about Clark's injury, not what we needed. Hopefully it's not too serious.

Bit to like, but not to like.

Marshall got beat in the ruck but killed it around the ground.

Hayes battled hard but I'm not sold. Most of his touches seemed like turnovers and had no impact in the ruck. Loved his pressure though!!

Battle didn't have to do a lot defensively but set up a lot of play out of the back half.

Hill has improved his defensive efforts.

Midfield was solid early but average late.

I was really hoping for Byrne's to step up but he has disappointed a little.

Like Patons game.

Can't understand why Sharman wouldn't be considered best 22

More confident in our game plan. Liked what I saw for a lot of it.

* me Hunter Clark hurts though. Finally playing full time in the guts - playing well and gets smashed like that.

Kids look alright - NWM has the work rate of Hill and he's 18.

Hayes looks pretty decent too. Paton also fantastic and hasn't missed a beat.

Webster continues to impress me while McKenzie was disappointing for mine.

All in all I feel like I know less about how our year is going to go than I did before. The game plan looks okay but injuries again might kill us.

Don’t get the Byrnes hate, does a lot of grunt work also really gets a burst of speed out of congestion. Greshams return even more important with Clark being out. I thought Seb was ok. Not sold on our forward set up atm. Balance seems off to me. Really liked hill. Give Nas 20 games and he’ll
Be dancing left right and centre.

While I do think these games are pretty meaningless on the whole, a few things irritated me tonight. The midfield is still very bland a lot of the time, which is no surprise, but I'm still not sure what kind of team we want to be. If you're not going to be a strong stoppage team, you need to be elite at pressure leading to intercepts and then moving quickly from half back. We are mediocre at stoppages, and without Highmore, we don't have any specialist interceptors.

The Clark injury is a total body-blow. Really flat about it as he looked classy.

My main negative from the game was we seemed to really struggle to take defensive intercept marks. I thought Wilkie was quite poor, obviously this new-look defence with Battle in there will take some time but I just felt that Battle, Howard and Wilkie all looked a bit lost and Sincs wasn't able to impact the game as much as he has. It's not a major concern and I think it's something we can sort out quickly.

First half the midfield looked good especially Crouch. I think he went off late which is when we started getting killed.

Marshall looks fit and strong which is great to see. I hope Gresh can get a good run of games in as he will get better each week.

Wanganeen-Milera looks great.

These games are so strange, the momentum swings enourmously and it's very hard to know what to take from it but mostly I just feel flat about the injuries.

OK so our centre bounce mids now are:

Steele

daylight

Crouch
Gresham
Ross
Hanners
Byrnes
Bytel

Not sure that's going to get it done unfortunately, unless by some miracle a bunch of them pop out of the box.
Yeah the midfield is a worry

Hopefully Gresh is better for the run. He looked good early before slowing down. Limited minutes though.

It's pretty bleak. I'd probably put Sinclair in there until we get some back. We're getting punished for years or neglecting internal midfield development.

Good to get the win but with Jones and Clark sidelined we need the likes of Bytel and Byrnes to step up in our midfield.

Owens, Windhager and NWM showed some glimpses of their talent tonight but they also showed they aren't up to AFL level just yet.

Some positives with Wood looking good in that midfield swingman role and Hayes looks a good pick up as a back up ruckman forward.

Gresham also looks like he is back to his best, twisting and turning like he did back in his heyday and looking like a matchwinner again.

Agree with most of this but for mine Sincs had probably the most impact for us with moving the ball forward. I was watching off the t.v and thought he was our best player with Hill second. He has nearly the cleanest hands in our team.
Would be interested in why you saw different from him.

I'm repeating myself from comments I made after the Carlton game but I'd rather we lose every practice match and rock up with a full list in round 1.

Just never seems to happen. It is what it is but we always seem to be fighting with one hand tied behind our backs at the start of the season.

Just hope Clark's injury isn't a half season job. He's sure due some good luck.

Yeah I'm probably being a bit harsh, he looked classy as every time he got it and used it beautifully, just didn't feel he got the ball enough and by that I mean we didn't take enough intercept marks and then use him by hand. But yeah he still looked great.
