"Glenorchy, Mariners and Devils midfielder Aaron Joseph will train with Carlton before next month's rookie draft and January's pre-season draft"

He's a 179cm centreman who was AA at the nationals and averaged 27 possesions. He reminds me alot of Foley in that he is an inside ball winner who can explode away from a pack with great pace (top 5 in draft camp) and agility (1st in draft camp). Is also a Carlton supporter.

Same reason Bellchambers didn't get picked up. The local footy scene isn't good enough to showcase these kids and the pathways aren't as good as they where when the Mariners where playing full-time in the TAC Cup. Plus no one rates the second division teams and he's under 180cm's. Definately worth getting as a rookie, excellent on a HBF or in the centre.

Hopefully this will change with the re-institution of the Statewide League in 2009.

What about if you dont even have 1 established KP backman?

There is so little quality left that you can't be to picky.

We have plenty of potential KP backmen in Austin, Jamo, Setanta and Waite with Thornton also able to play that role. We will probably also pick up Quigly from Ireland who the Lions thought they could develop into a CHB a couple of years ago.

You can never have to many mids and we have 4 selections in the rookie draft anyway.

Most likely will not have 4, (well we'll have four, but one pick will be utilised on Sheilds, and one possibly to be used on Quigley)

Would still like us to utilise a rookie pick on a KP backman though.

I hope we have a crack at Todd Grima in the PSD or at our first rookie pick. He can play forward and back, leading goalkicker for Geelong in the VFL and in the top three most agile players in the history of the draft camp. Really improved his overhead marking and he's very quick for his size. Port Adelaide will take him if we don't. I think he'd be a massive asset as a tall bench player, who could fill holes for us.

He is training with Port

Do you have his full set of DC results Oz?

Re: Aaron Joseph a Blue

From the Glenorchy Football Club. Good player, not very big though. I thought his size may have gone against him.

A very good 'in and under player' and a good tagger.

With Ratts to coach him he and mentor him he has the potential to develop into an excellent player.

Re: Aaron Joseph a Blue

Good get IMO.

He was AA at the U18 carnival and top ten for agility and speed at the draft camp.

Even though everyone keeps saying we need to draft defenders, we need more legspeed and ball winners in the midfield.

You can never have too many midfielders.

Joseph is a Carlton supporter. :thumbsu:

Yeah good get, you can never have too many mids, but you can definitely have too many defenders. We have recruited a lot in the last 3 seasons and now we need a good couple years to sort out who isn't going to cut it as a defender and start again.

Jamison, Carlos, Bower, Waite?, thornton, Anderson, Austin...not to mention fringe players like Saddington and our new recruits from this season we have plenty. I really like the players we have recruited this year, possibly the best off field year for the blues ever.

Some comments on Aaron Joseph.
Pick 42 – Saints – Aaron JOESEPH (04/07/89) 181/78
Attractive combination of pace and hardness, will be interesting to see when he goes given he came through Div 2 at the Champs. Another who could go earlier.

# 57 Brisbane Lions – Aaron Joseph (Tasmania / 178cm / 75kg)

Aaron Joseph is quite unheralded insomuch as he was an AA member by the end of the Champs. Saw a couple of his games and just thought he was a good consistent competitor. Will put his body on the line through a contest and whilst not your ideal height for a midfielder he is someone that sets up play with his hands particularly. Foot skills are very good and has work ethic and a motor that will keep him going more than the average bloke. I likened him a bit to Tom Hislop from last year who I was also a big fan….maybe a bit big!
63. Dogs – Aaron Joseph

The best of the Tassie midfielders but is a bit of a plain-jane centreman. Lacks real polish or hurt factor. Tends to work best in tight traffic where is a ball-winner. Quick over a couple of metres and nice changes of direction and evasive skills. Disposal has to improve and he needs to go longer with his kicks. Might be one of the genuine rovers who sneaks into the draft
25. Brisbane – Aaron Joseph – DOB 4/7/89 Ht 178 Wt 75

After Masten, Joseph is probably the best pure clearance man in this year’s draft. He is great at the bottom of packs and this and his ability to play a run with role make him an ideal second round selection for the Lions. He is intensely competitive and Leigh will love the edge he will bring in that regard to the engine room. It would be great to see how he combines with Proud in this regard after last year’s game at the Champs.

Joseph had a very impressive Champs and ended up getting a well-deserved AA selection and was voted the best player for Tasmania for the second year in a row (that was the first time that that has happened). He worked tireless throughout the Champs and picked up a mountain of possession (29 possessions per game for second overall). In all honesty he is often easy to miss as he can be quite unobtrusive but he just keeps getting the ball. He plays in and under and wins the hard ball. He has quick hands and clears the ball from the middle of packs well. He does the small things well and will get in a tackle with the best of them. Kicking wise he doesn’t have great penetration but he picks out his man well and lead the Champs with 7 goal assists. One of the things that I really liked was that he also played some run with and did a good job and really hurt the opposition going the other way. I love that and teams value that ability.

In addition to his performance at the Champs Joseph also was a big possession winner for the Tassie Mariners and Glenorchy for where he became a premiership player. In the 9 games for the u18s he averaged 27 possessions per game.

Joseph really stepped up and got people’s attention at Camp when he won the agility test with a great score (7.91 the next best was 8.05) and pulled out a very nice 2.91 20 metre sprint (5th overall). I had had some concerns about his ability to compete athletically at the next level but these results certainly laid some of those concerns to rest. Negatives wise and he is a little on the short side at 178 and he needs to put on some weight and get stronger to go with the AFL players in and under.

Looked quite good in the Devils games I saw. His coach Cresswell was quite annoyed and suprised he wasn't taken in the main draft.

OT. Just outside work feeding the parking meter and Campo, Hickmott, Knights and an unknown player walked past. Was going to be a smartass and say something witty, but brain didn't work fast enough.:p

Sounds like a better version of Adam Bentick. As I was reading that, that is who I kept on thinking about. But better still, Joseph has some foot speed, which AB clearly doesn't.

Exactly what I was thinking, is really going to put pressure on AB
