We have a few players who are firmly in the sights of uneducated posters, and are regarded as the cause of our problems.
Joseph is a wholehearted competitor, who has made some glaring errors in the last line. He really does not have the poise to be a last line defender. Neither has Tuohy, who will be a star HBF, wing or mid in time. Posters underestimate the pressure applied when a side streams forward, even moreso in today's footy, than years gone by. Both are players with a role in our future. Our coach/MC unfortunately is determined to make them last line players....big fail. We have 2 players on our list who have shown enough to be last line defenders on pacy small forwards. Russell and Armfield. Ratten has persisted in playing them up the ground, Armfield is making a decent fist of it, russell is not a 36o degree player and has suffered. He has probably played himself out of 2013, but I believe should get another go IN THE LAST LINE. Failing that players such as Curnow and Garlett hould be given a try down there. Jeffy lost all form, and is too goal conscious, Curnow is probably behind Ellard and McLean for midfield role now. Posters calling for Buckley etc to replace Joseph are way off the mark. Maybe a Tom Bell can be introduced through the backline, have not seen him play but reports suggest may be a good inside mid down the track. Dale came to the club HF/HB, does he have the defensive nous? Laidler will be back, ra ra ra. Does still not give us a lockdown small defender. The role has to be filled.
Similarly, criticism of Hampson's forward work is unfair, he is doing a role for his team (coach) despite being personally better served elsewhere. Our structures do not spread the defence, they congest our attack.
Watson spend half of the season in the 2's being pilloried by posters for not coming up. Now the same people are lauding him......all he needed was opportunity.
We have too many players played out of position, or overlooked due to hype or lack of it.
The likes of Walker up the ground when our midfield undermanned can be defended, but the soldiers are returning....we need forward targets NOW.
Hendo has become a very good backman, helps forward structure, but better down back. Walker to join Hammer/Kreuze and probably Thornton in Waite's absence as forward targets. Collins has earned a spot ahead of Garlett to join Betts to form a potent forward line

In all seriousness do you think that Gibbs should perform the lock down role in the back line, he is a very smart winner of the ball one out, can play tall and small. Regardless of what we would all like to think of Gibbs being a gun mid playing forward of the centre he does not have the engine to play in the mould of a murph or even a simpson. He proved he can lock down against Goodes, Johnson, had Goddard take him deep last year and stood up on all ocassions. It is important to note before the critics come in with the weather, that it is not his draft number that counts it is where he is best for the team and where he plays his best footy, from what I can see he is much better as the hunter and not the hunted.

The problem with AJ is that he plays against quality opponents and is not matching them the other way. If he goes further up the ground he can not do what Carazzo does by not only shutting down his opponent but beating him the other way, as a forward he is not potent enough around goals to demand respect and have a negating effect the other way. For us to be a quality side we can not simply say well this player stopped Milne, and this player stopped Dal Santo, the players need to win their own ball and use it well also.

Either way he wears the carlton jumper and we can only hope he continues to improve and becomes a quality AFL player for us.

Gibbs is a mid sized swingman, who I agree probably offers more down back. Probably offers too much in the distribution department for a lock down on pacy smalls, who would probably nullify his value going the other way in my opinion. Obviously us applying more pressure up the ground plays a huge part in the role of our defenders, so the trade off too great. Gibbs tends to run off his opponents, cant see that happening V Saad, Dahlhaus, Jetta and the like. Possibly should be recruiting for the role, we all talk about KPF and midfielders, but it is important to have a genuine lock down player who has the willingness to concentrate for the entire game and sacrifice himself for the team. I offered a few possibilities from our current list who should be "auditioned" in coming weeks.
While they have great ability and potential, at the moment Garlett and Yarran are little more than trade bait. That is a big call, but we all marvel at the skills of Daniel Motlop...where is he now? Ratten has not made them accountable, the whole team is suffering accordingly. The two named will chase, but not DEFEND if you can relate to the point of difference. Players like Joseph, Tuohy and others have copped the heat for defensive "lapses" up the ground.....and yes we can include C.Judd under that umbrella, he is a different level, but has rarely been asked to defend during his stellar career, it is unfair to only highlight the foot soldiers. Our recruiters to me have taken a bit each way with our small and mid size players. We seem to have too many attacking flankers (HBF reference) that MAY make mids. The recruitment of Bootsma and Bell may be an admission that we needed a point of difference. While I don't have as much criticism of our group's heart (unlike some posters) the type of player we recruit, their instincts and the indifferent development does lend itself to the down hill skier tag on occasion. Please be clear for the most part I do not hold the players accountable, we are not in the '70's anymore, modern structures minimise individuality, however failure by an individual to do his role can bring the whole unit down.

Joseph starred in last year's final against WC - thats why Ratten has persisted with him. So far this year he has proven he makes some poor decisions under pressure and cant run with the best smalls - straneg because he had pace to burn a couple of years ago.

I don't think it's pace that is the issue with AJ.

He's fairly quick.

the main issue with him is, and you mentioned it in your post, that he makes poor decisions. Simply, he's a dumb footballer with and without the ball. Being made to look slow can be a direct result of that - even the slightest lapse in concentration, lose sight of, or body contact with your man for a second and he can be 5 metres in front of you regardless of how quick you are.
