Puts his body on the line which is nice.

My problems:
- His disposal is very poor. its gotta be 2 to 1 poor disposal to good disposal ratio.
- He slows the play down too much after a mark. I cant recall seeing someone take long to dispose of the ball reguarly like he does.

If he gets the disposal right then he will be a more than reasonable player.

The problem is that Shattock has slotted right into the side...as a Kingsley type player.

Good enough to not be crap, but not good enough to make people want to keep him in the side. Bad enough that people groan when he screws up, but not bad enough that he's the worst player on the field. He might even get together a patch of pretty good form at some stage, but Choco will be the only one giving him much chance to do so.

Basically he's just around the mark, and if it comes to a choice between a Shattock type and a rookie that could be anything, it shouldn't be surprising to see people want the latter.

but why the critisiscm towards him?? kingsley is getting older, but i dnt think shattock is very old, he has ALOT of years left in him.

Why the critiscm to him when ppl like cochrane have been gettin a free ride for so long noW?

Macca and Porthos have hit the nail on the head. When we are struggling he isn't quite the recruit who is going to drag us out of it.
My biggest gripe with him is that he slows things down. The other thing I've noticed is that he falls to ground a little easy and fumbles the footy when there is someone closing in on him. Occasionally he will draw a free for holding the man as a result, but it isn't a good trait to have.

No-one on this board has criticised Shattock ahead of Cochrane, I reckon.

Everything's already been covered in regards to his pros (fearlessness and work off the ball) and cons (poor disposal, SANFL-paced decision-making on the ball) by the likes of Macca19 and Porthos, but the problem I always had was the way the media (Fox Footy mainly) talked up the fact he was a Brisbane Lions premiership player (0 stats that day) and that this would somehow give him a golden ticket into the team.

Not the worst player at the club, but geez, when everyone's fit and suspension-free he'd struggle to get a game, a la Cochrane and Poulton.

PS - Unfortunately, at nearly 25 (DOB - 02/05/80) years old and in his sixth year in the system, it may be a little late to start working on his disposal. If you can't learn how to use to the footy surrounded by the likes of Black, Voss, Akermanis and Lappin, when will you?

BUMP.

How did this imposter ever darken the door of two of the powerhouse clubs of the current era?

I'm confident Choco could've picked one of you at random, put you in a Power guernsey and you would've given a greater account of yourself today than Shattock, I reckon.

One of the worst players I've seen pull on a boot - granted we're only talking from 1985/6 onwards - but I'm happy with that call nonetheless.

DT, I think Choco realised that after the Premiership he had a bonus Gold Pass he could hand out to some no-hoper wannabe, and Shattock fitted that bill. His performance today will be talked away by calling it concussion, but those of us who see past his undisciplined "courageous" acts which are really so far off the contest they are soft, know that when his head no longer feels sore, he will still put in that sort of effort.
He gives fumbling and not keeping your feet a new level of expertise.

I do not mind Shattock at all. Quite the opposite actually.
He is being given a job to do week in week out, and that's what he goes out there and does.
Probably no more no less, but he is far from being "one of the usual suspects".

I wanna like him, but hes hard to like.

Hes hard, but stupidly hard. Hes a sniper....not in the Byron Pickett sense who at least hits people near the football. He'll dig his knees into someones head on the ground but he wont back into a pack. Hes exceptionally arrogant...which isnt bad except he has nothing to back it up with.

His disposal is still hit and miss. He still slows the play down an awful lot. Whenever he does something that I think "yeah that was pretty bloody good", he'll go and give away a 50 2 minutes later or completely stuff up a piece of play. Hes often found nowhere near his opponent.

I think he has a lot of room for improvement and could become a good player...but I dont think he'll ever improve that much and at 25ish I cant see it happening.

Not sure about being in the preferred just 22 atm, but that's basically where I see him (the quote).
He has shown enough things to like although in bits and pieces only at this stage. This year was his first pre season ever, plus the side has been extremely unsettled, so IMO he needs another full year before we see the best of him.
Perhaps I am a bit biased too since he is a local (NT) lad. :)
