I always preferred Glen Mitchell to Jim Maxwell. According to Glen's website, he commentated on Australia's recent tour of South Africa for the South African Broadcast Commission, which I only found out about after the event.

Skull's best asset is still his analysis of the game. As funny as he is, if he did not have the great knowledge that he does, he would not be the gem that he is.

During the last test, he commented on the use of the 3rd man in modern day cricket as many commentators do, but he actually said that for Dravid, he would have one as Dravid is the best glider of the ball through that region that he had ever seen and the very next ball Dravid glided it to 3rd man for 4. He is a deep thinker about the game and his thoughts are always worth listening to.

Also picked Nathan Lyon as a test spinner before his FC debut.

Don't see anything wrong with him. In fact he provides great insight.
I think someone has had a word to Lawson as he seems a bit better this year. In was the constant negativity he used to have in previous series which annoyed people. Everything was always done better in his day, all the players playing were terrible, the captains all have no idea and so on with him... sure point out some negative points but you need to counter that with the positives when they were there, something he never did up until this summer.

Lawson was put back in his box after the shooting of the SL team in Pakistan.

He had been sprouting an abusing all and sundry about the decisions not to play in Pakistan, saying the risks were completely blown out of proportion.

He had to eat a load of humble pie after that atrocity.

I agree that he's been better this year, but past sins are hard to forget.

It's one of life's great pleasures. But l actually think the current line up is fairly weak in relative terms. Whilst still 50 trillion light years ahead of Channel 9. Healy is an unlistenable knob.

Morphett is ordinary for mine and has been for some time (prone to error, hyperbole and simply lacks any great analysis for the game), Fleming is ill-judged and should be on MMM, Lawson is quite sharp but overly negative and aggressive. He was quite fixated at times on minor matters during the South African tour. Roebuck is sorely missed (on radio at least) for a broader perspective on the game. l really wish they had somehow convinced Gideon Haigh to jump in the slot.

Maxwell is a fine host, Kerry is a treasure (his insight is so underrated) and Harsha is a wonderful broadcaster. l think Mitchell is missed as he was a good broadcaster. l didn;t like him as much as some here and actually thought that he became overly aggressive or frustrated last Summer, especially with his teasing turning into more tedious bitter edge last Summer. It used to be in good taste but l thought even Kerry felt it was crossing lines last Summer, Agnew certainly did. l remember it being quite apparent whilst listening live at the Adelaide Test. Hope he gets well etc. Would have loved to have seen Whately come on instead of Morphett to be the new Tim Lane (oh how the mighty have fallen).

Harsha and Kerry are such a good combination. I could listen to those two all day.

Kerry told a joke which I completely didn't get, but his cackling still made me laugh.

Fleming's the only one who really bugs me. Sometimes his sentences sound like two different sentences awkwardly pasted together - often the tenses and grammar of the second half don't match the first, and I have to think for a while to work out what he was trying to say. He may have a bit of knowledge, but he's terrible at expressing it.

Roebuck sorely missed on radio? Not really, as nasty as this may sound, not long after I was aware of his death, I thought to myself quietly "Yay, he won't be on the radio anymore".

As for Gideon "20/20 is just a TV show masquerading as cricket" Haigh, c'mon man, just because he likes cricket, makes a career writing about it and is a go to guy for a quote, doesn't mean he's an intelligent observer/commentator. I've never understood why he's considered intelligent, must be the manner in which he speaks .

A portable digital radio has been one of the best investments I have made in a long time. As the digital broadcast is simulcast with the TV, on goes the mute button and ABC Grandstand it is!

I for one have really missed Glenn Mitchell on this summer's cricket coverage.

I know why he is not there. For others who don't, have a look at his website - glennmitchell.com.au - he writes some interesting stuff on there about sport but it also gives an insight into the battles he has with mental illness.

It is sad that in these times the ABC could not have seen it within itself to have offered an opportunity for him to come back.

I think it is sad that someone who has such a talent for what he did cannot find a niche back on air anywhere.

He covered so many different sports for the ABC over such a long period.

One day I hope we get to hear his voice again, especially with K O'K! :)

I've often wondered how Kerry O'Keeffe would have gone had Alan McGillvray still been around. Can't really see those two working together very well :)

I think they should look at getting Brett Geeves to do more commentary IMO. Thought he was good. I love the skull he is a classic. Remember when skull was on 9 last summer for the tea break and they didn't know how to take him. Has a beautiful head for radio

Am I right in saying that the ABC in WA won't have him back because Clint Wheeldon refuses to work with him again? Understandably, given what went on, IMO.

But would it be Australia-wide? If not, he could move to the eastern states and fit in quite nicely in Victoria. Hell, his wife is from NSW - the could move there and he could call Sydney Swans and GWS games.

That probably nails my thoughts on Fleming as well. Straight from Fox sports commentary, just talks a bit of crap (Highway of hesitation and about 15 other descriptions for that area) and tries to relate everything to AFL

I heard Mitchell had pretty heavy bi-polar and has come through the other side doing much better than he was (which is good) but what actually happened between him and Wheeldon?

Was listening to these guys in Guilderton while away, I had a good laugh. Harsha's talk on vegemite was amusing.

I was at a function recently here in Perth where there were some ABC people and the ones that I spoke to about Glenn said that the one with the problems nowadays is actually Clint Wheeldon. They said he is very insecure and finds it hard that everyone keeps asking him about Mitchell and that he is a little intimidated by the abilities of Corbin Middlemas, who is just a kid and was brought in to fill Mitchell's position. They also said he has a pretty fair temper too. They said everyone else was happy for him to come back to the ABC in Perth but Wheeldon refuses to speak with him at all despite Mitchell having made several attempts to try and talk things through. I must admit, when you read the stories on Mitchell's website and you realise what he has been through and how he actually endeavored to take his own life only to be prevented by a total stranger, it seems pretty tough that Wheeldon is the only one that doesn't seem to want to forgive him. Considering it would have been Mitchell that would have hired him when Wally Foreman passed away and then would have taught him the ropes, it seems he is a pretty bitter sort of bloke.

Glenn Mitchell is a star, as his wife.

Hopefully he keeps improving his health to the point that we hear him on our airwaves again. There are so many laughable broadcasters out there, to have one sitting on the sidelines is a shame.
