Just checked out Clint Wheeldon's LinkedIn and twitter - describes himself as Grandstand's SENIOR sports broadcaster in WA. He has put on his LinkedIn profile that he became the SENIOR bloke in July last year. SENIOR? Hardly needed when the other bloke he works with is 21! Me thinks that my previous post re his insecurities is pretty spot on!

It's probably his actual title.

On the dispute, this is from The Australian in May:

"ONE of the ABC's top sports presenters, Glenn Mitchell, has quit the national broadcaster after being involved in a newsroom shouting match with colleague Clint Wheeldon and sending an offensive, late-night email to Wheeldon and his wife. Mitchell and Wheeldon, who sit next to each other in the ABC's East Perth building, had a heated argument early last week.
The email was then forwarded to ABC management.
Mitchell, who is married to Grandstand's Karen Tighe and is now believed to be in South Africa, handed in his resignation last Friday.
The ABC has denied reports that Mitchell was told to leave that day and not come back, saying instead he was on holidays.
It is understood he had offered his resignation several times before but it was never accepted by management. But the ABC announced yesterday that it had accepted Mitchell's latest resignation, following discussions with senior executives.
ABC Local Radio manager for Western Australia Deborah Leavitt would not comment on the email claims.
"Glen Mitchell decided to resign from ABC radio last Friday," she said. "It is with regret that the ABC has accepted his resignation."

And yeah, it was bipolar but also misdiagnosed as depression. So the medication that was supposed to help him made it wors, to the point where he very nearly took his own life.

I feel for Mitchell and associated probs but I gave up with the Sat morn sportstalk before the scheduled AFL game. Mitchell just shat on every caller to the point where it was clearly noticeable as a mug listener.

I am assuming his associated issues were at the root of this problem? Cause it was pretty bloody ordinary for a while there, Ken Judge not much better.

Kerry is the go, good for a laugh but knows his stuff also.

I'll go against the grain and say I'm a big fan of Flem's commentary. Sure he goes on about the hallway of hesitation etc and can be repetitive, but he provides a fair bit of insightful commentary. He seemingly has a pretty in depth knowledge of cricket, especially the technical side of the game. It's probably his jovial manner and the fact that he does appeal to a 'different' sort of cricket fan that turns some of the more avid ABC listeners off him.

Kerry and Harsha are unbeatable though. The chilli eating was absolutely classic.

Kerry is a treasure (his insight is so underrated)

I used to think Kerry was just there for the comedy relief, but some of his insights recently have been brilliant. His knowledge of the international teams is fanastic, knows all about the indian players, who is coming through etc, very impressive.

i didn't know that about glenn mitchell. would explain why he was commentating for the SABC during the SL series

sad, because i always thought he was a good commentator

ABC commentary team

To me, cricket on ABC is what summer is all about. The smell of sunscreen, driving hundreds of kilometres through the country, the heat, pub meals but most importantly, cricket on the radio.

I have to say, though, it hasn't been as good this summer. I love Jim Maxwell. I love Kerry (who doesn't). Harsha has been fantastic (and the mrs loves listening to him and Kerry = no complaining about the radio station).

But I think that there are 2 big holes to fill with the departures of Roebuck and Mitchell. There's just something missing.

Mr Bowlology, I like. But he's only been on a couple of times I assume due to his commitments with the slap and tickle on fox. Hoggy wasn't too bad with his guest stint during the Perth test. But who else is there?

As much as Drew Morphett tries I don't really rate him. He's a bit boring and unengaging. Terry Alderman the same.

What are your thoughts?

Re: ABC commentary team

I have a suspicion, if the C9 commentators bought in similar "banter" like what Kerry often does, there would be a huge outcry on how unprofessional and pathetic they are. I was surprised that chilli thing with Harsha was appreciated on here, considering the stick C9 gets.

Agree with you on Mitchell. Listening to Morphett, I can see why he wasn't in the test line-up in the previously. Disagree on Roebuck, the more I listened to him, the less intelligent I thought he was. I didn't think he was insightful, like his reputation suggests.

Fleming? Can take him or leave him. Alderman? I can see you pov on him, it's just, cos I liked him as a bowler, even if he is boring and unengaging, I can take it. Lawson? He doesn't annoy me, unlike most on here. The bloke I wasn't sure about but now like, is Danny Morrison. I think he's a bit OTT on TV but he tempers it on radio and it's a nice balance, I think. Wouldn't have a problem if he was continued to be used in the future in games not invloving NZ.

I already think the Ch9 guys are painfully irritating, even my childhood hero Slater. I avoid their commentary whenever possible.

I think Kerry just has the personality that makes you enjoy it. My favourite this summer was when he decided that skippy used morse code to tell the kids what was wrong! :D

I don't think I'd like it if the Ch9 guys did similar though. A guy you like having a bit of banter is a good thing, guys that you don't like having a bit of a banter is a bad thing.

I wasn't his biggest fan and my opinion of him was getting less and less in recent years but he was still a pretty good commentator and has left a hole imo.

Lawson? He doesn't annoy me, unlike most on here.

Forgot about Henry - I do like him.

Still on the fence about this guy.

I'd absolutely love Harsha to be retained for other series - I've been waiting for his return since India last toured.

I was a big fan of Johnathan Agnew last summer and look forward to when he returns too.

P.S. Apologies about the duplicate. When you search 2-3 pages and don't find a thread you don't usually expect to find a relevant, recent thread any further back...

I think it's the medium.

Them being on radio makes it more casual and informal. They still provide a ball-by-ball commentary and it doesn't hurt that they are very likeable and balance the comedy schtick with brilliant analysis. Skull has a great time but is extremely knowledgeable. He also doesn't push it too hard and try to get too comedic with Morphett or someone else. He keeps it to Agnew, Maxwell and Harsha.

Something that is sorely lacking on Ch. 9. Not one commentator actually tries to analyse the play, beyond Ian "pick one topic and harp on about it for the next 6 hours" Chappell. In fairness, when Bill Lawry is on he's very knowledgeable. The rest of them? You'd never guess they'd actually played cricket before.

Re: ABC commentary team

Im sure I heard it mentioned that this is the first radio commentary that Harsha has done since the last series in Australia. He seems to really enjoy being part of the coverage, and has loosened up a little as the series goes on as he gets used to being with kerry again.

I didnt mind Danny Morrison, his commentary was always fair and you can tell hes loving living in OZ now. Would be nice to get at least 1 non aussie to be a regular each summer, to replace Roebucks non Aussie perspective.

Walshy is reting soon as well, some regular voices are starting to leave.

The ABC & C9 work in two different mediums which requires totally different styles.

TV has the benefit of vision that the listener can see and they work around that by being able to show replays and other other information about what is happening.

Radio requires the commentator to engage the listener and entertain them in a different way. Cricket has a large number of breaks and requires different skills. Being about to have a bit of banter is necessary and is what is attractive to many.

I think there are very few commentators who could work in both mediums. The only ones that come to mind are Lawry, Richie & Morphett.

They could do worse than Morrison, he's been quite impressive this summer.

Re: ABC commentary team

On the subject of Geoff Lawson, I'm not a great fan of his commentary as I find him a bit negative, but to dismiss him outright is ludicrous.

He has an amazing cricket brain, and was one of the most innovative captains the Sheffield Shield has ever seen and we can thank him a little for the successes of Taylor & Waugh as skippers thanks to their early influences under his leadership

If you're sitting down and listening to entire call, ABC radio is very good. The only problem I have is when you pick up the radio and turn it on hoping for a quick score update, sometimes you can be listening for about 5 minutes before you find out what's going on.

Agree with that.

While the chili eating incident was hilarious, if I'd switched on half way through it, I'd still be wondering what the score was and whether I was, indeed, listening to the commentators talk amongst themselves because the weather had turned nasty suddenly.

actually, it was pretty funny to hear them describe the action oh so briefly whenever a ball was bowled as if it was a mere sidelight to the chili.
That's what I thought. It did dominate a fair bit. Yeah, it was funny, but not that funny! Although the slow hand clap from the crowd definitely was hilarious.

I'm still missing Glenn Mitchell from the ABC's coverage.

According to last weekend's Sunday Times he has overcome his depression issues.

That being said, please ABC, get him back on air!
