Sydney Blue Sox

I like all of the names, but the Blue Sox is the clear "winner".:D

Further to yesterday's name release, Victoria Park has been ruled out as the home base for the Melbourne Aces, thanks to the tight arse council in the area vetoing the right to hold ABL games there.

Looks like Altona may still be the venue.:(

It amuses me that Melbourne baseball fans wont make the 15km trip to the only purpose built baseball stadium in metropolitan Melbourne, when Sydney's fans are expected to travel the 35km out to Blacktown.

Sure it isn't as nice as Yankee Stadium, but it is a whole lot better than many of the minor league and college ballparks that I have been to. It is closer than Pioneer Park in Geelong - the other main alternative at the moment.

I'll travel to Altona if that's where they play the games, I just won't like it, that's all.

But plenty won't go out, and it's not so much the location, its the stadium itself.

I haven't been there for a few years now, but last time I was there, god damn, it made Waverley Park seem like the warmest place on earth.

The place is in open plains, and the stands are positioned so the wind blows right into your face, let alone right into a hitters stance, making it harder to hit the ball out of the ballpark.

I hope they find an alternative, but if not, I'll still go out to the "wind tunnel", I jut won't like going there.

If the Melbourne Aces (terrible name by the way) play their home games at Altona then the ABL can kiss goodbye the Melbourne market - the most competitive sporting market in Australia.

With a revamped domestic cricket comp being announced this willingness to go down the ghetto pathway will spell the end before it starts.

Altona is a dump. A travesty that won't go away because the VBL were too cheap to build and invest in something closer to the city. Instead they took the cheap land, the cheap option, the short term fix.

Does anyone learn from the mistakes of the past?

Not good enough.

Agree 100% with the sentiments expressed here. Love my baseball and would love to get in to this league, but just can't see myself going there to enjoy games on a regular basis.

The latest rumours have the baseball ground at Latrobe Uni as the most likely site for the Melbourne Aces, although the Melbourne Showgrounds has also been touted as a possible solution, perhaps in co operation with the Essendon Football Club even.

Expect an announcement on the home location in the coming weeks, as season tickets are already on sale (at a discounted price).:)

Melbourne Aces are having a 5000 seat stadium built opposite Moorabbin Airport and Capital Golf Club on the corner if Centre Dandenong Rd and Ross St in Heatherton/Cheltenham.
The Cheltenham Rustlers will eventually move there and the Moorabbin Hockey Club and Kingston Heath CC will take over Farm Rd Reserve.

I hope you are right Superfreak, would be a great spot for a small, boutique stadium, and would service all sorts of baseball clubs and leagues playoffs in the south eastern suburbs.

5,000 seems about the right size too.

Let's hope you're right SuperFreak.

For now, seems as if games during the week may be at the Showgrounds and Saturday's at DBA side Dandenong's ground on Saturdays.

Moorabbin? Why would you build a 5000 seater between golf links? It's not even close to a railway station.

There's no public transport. It's hardly central. No bars, pubs or restaurants to go to after a game. I thought the team was called Melbourne. Not the Southeast Aces.

How moronic is the process for this planning? I can't help but think the MLB have not had much say in all this, unless they're following the paradigm that saw them build Tampa a stadium not near anyone which is, as a result, empty every game.

The other options of Dandenong and the Showgrounds are equally inconvenient. There's a reason why all the football teams in this town gave up their home grounds and play in one of two spots in the city.

Does the ABL and Victoria Baseball think their going to cultivate some suburban family supporter base willing to drive to the middle of nowhere a couple of times a week?

The A-league works because it appeals to adults with disposable incomes. I fear this is going to be a monumental disaster.

It defies all logic.

Dodger,

Agreed it's hardly central, but for those of in the south-east, hearing options like Altona, Geelong, Preston (La Trobe), Victoria Park and the Showgrounds makes the game seem exclusive to those on the other side of the yarra to us.
All of a sudden a new venue that may be in the south east (remember, Aces in Keysborough was to be redeveloped but the program was shelved when the ABL became defunct last time) is brought up and there's critisism.
The lack of public transport is a reason I can respect, but just because it's in the south east shouldn't be a reason.

Bite?

Just bring back the Adelaide Giants.... more likely to bring back people that used to follow the league as well.
Norwood Oval used to be packed out back in the 90's with the Giants. It will take some doing to get back to those days.

So has anyone else seen the massive changes to the draft schedule the ABL made when the official one was released last week? What's up with that. It doesn't look good for their organising, that's for sure.

what changes have been made kagji? i printed off the season fixture today. so im unaware of any previous fixtures.

i really hope that we arent based in geelong. i would love to be based in south east melb.

I only have the Heat draft schedule, but it is almost totally different to the one they released a couple of days ago. In fact, the only series that is the same is when we play Melbourne at home in the last series of the regular season. Several series' have been swapped, including a few times where we're at home when originally we would be away, and vise versa. The draft schedule had the Grand Final from Feb 3 to 5, with the semis the week before in a 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3 format. Obviously, that has now been changed to include a preliminary final.

In the end, I guess it isn't a huge deal. But for me, it's not a great indicator as far as planning goes.

I agree as well, it would really suck if Melbourne were actually based in Melbourne. Weren't their crowds much higher when they left Geelong at the end of last year?

yeah right. Been following the Giants long?

yeah, since about 2002 when Rob Nen, Barry Bonds, Jason Shcmidt, Rich Aurilla and J.T Snow were still playing. But weve gone downhill ever since the loss to the angels. but all is good now that we have a world series ring around our fingers.:thumbsu:

I totally wanted the name Yarradogs. Sounds like the Charleston Riverdogs.

Aces was always going to be the name. Can't disregard the name that's been so good to Victorian baseball over the last few years.
