IMO the Cats should recieve

Picks 1, 2, and 5 of the first round.

And the first pick in the second round.

GC have got the best player in the land. Compound that with top picks in the next 3 years. They have already been gifted a flag or two.

He's not worth that.

They will get a 1st round pick used after their 1st round pick and a 1st round after the non final teams.

This has been known for months now.

No player is worth 3 top 5 picks. Not even Ablett. A fair deal would probably be about what west coast got for Judd. (its not Carlton's fault they royaly screwed up those picks)

Besides don't we already know that the highest a team can get is a mid-first round + the pick after your first round.

Also there is no way the gold coast will win a premiership soon. They are going to have massive salary cap problems in a couple of years. It seems like they're paying Ablett + Rischitelli + Harbrow + Krakouer + Bock + Brown about a third to half the cap between them.

Fair enough. Was unaware this had already been brought to fruition.

that kind of compensation is all time great, judd, riewoldt stuff

i'd love it, but gazza isn't worth all that

The reality is that Geelong were never going to get what they call "fair" compensation. BUT lets remember he was basically a "free pick" in the 40's when drafted. Lets also remember they got Hawkins for basically nothing (which netted them Selwood). They have got plenty of compensation over the past few years.

Pretty much now whilst we can all jump up and down saying "Geelong will get screwed", lets be realistic. You are NEVER going to fully compensate a side for losing a top 5 player in the comp. It is impossible. Geelong have had enough freebies in the last decade to make up for this compensation. Put it this way ask a Geelong supporter if they want to give up Selwood rather than have an ordinary compensation. Bet you they wouldn't! Selwood in my view is the compensation pick.

Not quite as good as Collingwood spending 5 or 6 father son picks for 1.5 AFL players but hey... (only get .5 of a player if he can't kick)

Serious question, does the subsequent ladder position affect these picks? So if we came bottom 8 next year and banked the pics they would improve converse to the ladder position? If so, fire up the tank it's going to be a talking point.

Geelong will survive without Ablett. Best player in the competition and a fantastic midfielder but Geelong have some great midfield depth. Same with Collingwood and Dane Swan.

Yes, if I were Geelong I'd bank them for 2-3 years. There is an compromised draft without GWS/GC raping the picks in the middle. Geelong banks the picks and say the come 10th in 2011 you could have pick 6,7,17. That is a pretty fair outcome. Forget this year, you are not getting value for Ablett. Bank them and use them when GC don't have a zillion picks, same with GWS.

You cant use the picks until 2012 otherwise they will be after the 1st rd. Meaning pick 26-27.

After 2011 the first pik will be after your pick so if you come last in 2012 it will be pick 2 if you come 1st the pick will be 19.

The second pick will be after the non finalists which is pick 11 as long as there are no 1st round Priority picks.

Matthew Scarlett too. They got on F/S.

Ummmm... no.

The first of their selections is to be taken immediately after their "normal" 1st round selection in the draft. If their normal draft pick is 10, then their compensation pick would be #11; if their normal pick is #3, then their compensation pick would be #4. They can use this pick at any time in the next 5 years (2010-2014), however, if they choose to use it in 2010 or 2011 then the pick will be taken at the end of the 1st round (the same as the Bock, Rischitelli, Brown and Harbrow selections).

Their 2nd selection is to be taken at the end of the 1st round, the same as the Bock, Rischitelli, Brown and Harbrow compensation picks. Once again, the pick has a 5 year life expectancy.

If Geelong choose to use one (or both) of their compensation draft picks this year then they have until Friday Nov 5th to notify the AFL of their intention. If they choose to use it in any other year then they have to notify the AFL before the commencement of Round 1 that year.

Now...

If Geelong choose to use their first pick in 2010 it would be pick #26. Use it in 2011 and it would be #27. It comes into its own from 2012-2014 when it can be used inside the first round (which isn't compromised by GC/GWS having 9 picks in the first 15).

If Brisbane, Adelaide, Hawthorn and Footscray all use their compensation picks this year, then Geelong's 2nd compensation pick could be as late as #31.

I still maintain that the biggest issue with the GC concessions (apart from the pure number of high round player selections they get) is that they don't have to give up anything for the uncontracted players, so they don't have to care about the quality of the players they pick up.

I think that instead of having access to 16 uncontracted players, they should have had say a swag of draft picks which they were able to exchange for uncontracted players.

If they had the first 30 picks in this draft, and could trade them as they saw fit, then the AFL could have decided the value of Ablett - ie, picks 1, 5, and 9, and the Gold Coast would have had to decide if he was worth it.

That would have been the logical thing to do, yes.

Honestly, that is not even near the level of compensation that we deserve for Gary.

You are talking about they BIGGEST transfer in history. This eclipses Barassi or Judd...you are talking about not just Gary Ablett Jnr and his ability (not to mention the fact that he is the number 1 player in his prime)....but you can't ignore the name and the prestige that go with the Ablett name. The name Gary Ablett is the single biggest name ever in football, its worth goes into the 10's of millions (and that is conservative). Ablett Snr and Jnr are an automatic history for any club and Geelong Football Club has today lost something more valuable than just they top player in the league. I can see Demetriou's smile now knowing that his pet the Gold Coast has been gifted a slice of football history - and what our potential compensation will be no better than a couple of picks, which are probably only as good as between 8 -16...

The whole thing wreaks of BS. We have been r*ped by the AFL for being succesfull. ..... and to think we loose Bomber in the same week.

Absolute ****ing Bullshit

Exactly that's what should have happened, but we all know Vlad loves his baby, and wants to give it everything for nothing, and doesn't care who we screws over in the process.

Compensation is a joke too, to suggest anything less than pick 1 is adequate is complete rubbish. Picks 10 and 18 or whatever, and not for at least 2 years. Bollocks.
