Part of being great in most sports is having a bit of an ego though. It's funny, last week Fyfe was sure to defer to Ablett and this week Ablett was sure to defer to Fyfe. Neither will claim it because that's the mentality most Australian footballers have.

Russell Westbrook has no claim to being the best player in the NBA, in fact I'm pretty sure he's not even the best player on his team (that honour would go to Kevin Durant) but the thing that makes him a great player - and he is undoubtedly great - is that he believes he is the best player in the league. It allows him to believe he can do anything, be anything and has no doubt that he can be the one who wins the game for his team.

It really is a crazy contrast.

That's a cultural difference between the US and Australia.

Exactly - but I have no doubt Ablett believes he is the best player in the land. But Australians don't feel the need to tell everybody like Americans do.
Never sing your own song - let others sing it for you

Has much more impactcwhen others sing it for you anyway.

No matter what anyone says, no player in the league is or is close to Garry he is simply the best. Fyfe, Danger and the likes all superstars and some games they are as good if not better than Gaz.. but they are just not in the same league able to put out performances on that level weekend after weekend.

Most Australian footballers? It's all Australian footballers judging from what they say to the press.

Humility is a big part of AFL because of Australia's obsession with tall poppy syndrome I think.

Talking yourself up outside of a job interview isn't the thing in Australia, but it has jack shit to do with the so-called "tall poppy syndrome".

I quite like it though. The guys at my local bottleo say Gaz comes in a bit and he's one of the nicest, most humble blokes you'll meet. To be as incredibly well achieved and affluent as him while staying grounded gives you the warm fuzzies.
I thought gaz didnt drink.
