It ain't private if it's on twitter.
I'd be happy to see the AFL make it clear their is no place for religious statements of any kind inside footy.
He and anyone else for that matter can do whatever they like on their own time even tweet their buttocks.

The AFL is all about inclusion, so that will never happen.

It's good to be comfortable and open about your beliefs if they are don't harm others. Seems a bit indulgent to be posting photos of yourself doing it - and that does make it different to just hearing about Bachar Houli or Andrew Swallow or other players being devout - but it's not hurting anyone, so each to their own.

I find some of the outrage in this thread quite funny.

1) He is not shoving any message down anyone's throat. So how many who are so against this recall Ablett mentioning his beliefs prior to this during his 11 year career? Were you forced to read his twitter/the article/this thread?

2) Someone suggesting they are praying to win. That's just pure speculation. The quote attached to the picture to me suggests this isn't the case.

3) The suggestion that AFL should ban players from mentioning religion - not convinced that is legal! I know some already think the AFL is like a dictatorship so this would just really confirm that!

In essence this is really a non-issue, and I'm actually surprised at how much people are reading into it. I'm sure there are plenty of players with a wide range of beliefs. Why should the fact that they play football change this?

Praying before a game is not Tebowing.

Out on the fielf on one knee with your chin resting on a clenched fist is Tebowing.

It's the same god

This could be an interesting segue into the various aspects of monotheism.

Instead, Spitta Swallow prays before games, but he doesn't make a big deal about. Daniel Wells is also keen on the Catholic God, again, doesn't make a big deal of it.

Jack Ziebell however performs a two hour ceremony before every game where he sacrifices 12 live oxen in a fiery pit in order that Thor may fill him with the spirit of the berzerker and drive his enemies before him.

Knowing David Swallow is pretty religious we can safely assume he's on the outer and comming back to W.A.

I believe the Bible has a bit about being your brother's keeper.

Yeh Ablett unlike Tebow is actually good. Why is this even a story, who the **** cares?

The fact that we let something like a relatively personal belief, which the footballer is hardly trying to mass expose, leads to comments like 'genuinely disappointed'.

As if people deserved to have an actual opinion about him in the first place is beyond the point, using it as a reason to dislike him is just weird. Almost as weird as how Americans treat the reversed situation (Where to be ungracious religiously is an affront seemingly at times).
Absolutley no issue with his beliefs.
Posting a photo in club colors, and in company on twitter I have issues with.

I have never heard the AFL express any religious affiliation and hope it stays that way.

It is not really an issue about the belief, but opens the door to a pandora's box of personal beliefs being paraded under the auspices of the AFL.

What if he was performing a satanic or pagan ritual?
How do you stop any other player tweeting his/her favorite cult activity ore-game?

It also crossed my mind that using PEP may be banned under the WADA code. PEP (Performance Enhancing Prayer) would be banned as an un-approved method. In line with logic expressed in the Essendon/ASADA board, why would you use PEP if it had no effect?

If you think I'm being a little "light hearted" or blase, you are right.
While I totally disagree with publicizing ones religious beliefs while representing the AFL I hardly think it is a hanging offense.

I simply reel at the thought of the game being more complicated by throwing religion into the mix.
