I know a couple of years ago the AFL launched the veterans list where 1 or 2 players who were near the end of their career and had played a lot of games for the club were classified as veterans. But I was wondering about a few things about the veterans.

What does it actually means if a player (or 2) are on the veterans list?

Does this mean that the players on the veterans list are "invisible" on the club list whereas next year you have 38 players on the list plus if you have 2 veterans, you can have 40 players on the list?

Are veterans still counted when it comes to the salary cap?

Cheers,

As far as I know, they are included in the 38, but aren't involved with salary cap restrictions.
I heard they had to be the oldest 2 players on the list who'd been at the club for ten+ years. Anyone know if that's true?
Is it also true, that certain clubs are paying their star mid to late 20's players FAR less than they're worth, with the arrangement being they'll be paid several times their worth once on the salary cap? Not a bad plan I suppose, as long as the player involved didn't succome to a chronic injury and retire early.....

You can have up to 2 veterans (clearly defined as 10 years service with the same club) in addition to your 38.

Only half of a veterans salary contributes to a club's salary cap.

I thought they had to be over 30 & have played at the club for 10 years. I also think the rules are different for Port & Freo due to their length of time in the comp.

My understanding is that only 50% of a veterans salary is included in the cap.

Port and Freo are against the veterens list because it means they can only have 38 players.

It is 10 years service at the same club, and only half of their pay is added to the salary cap. They don't necessarily have to be over 30. They might have started as an 18 year old and now be 28.

Collingwood don't have a veteren any more, Geelong only has Hocking. Carlton have got Bradley and Silvagni, but I bet they'll be waiting for one of them to retire to put Kouta on it.

thanks for the replies

I'd been wondering for a while what were the rules and relegations of the veterans list, it seems the AFL and media have explained clearly to everyone about the Rookie list but not so much the Veterans list.
BSA - Yeah Kelly and Lewis sure do add a bit of age to our midfield brigade!

Re GoCatsGo saying Freo have a problem as we can only have 38 Palyers. Freo have no problems with the Veterens list and actually have Dale Kickett on it.

I was under the same impression as BigHawk. The one or two players on the veterans list are not included in the list of 38 and only half their salary is included in the salary cap.

We have Loewe and Burke as our veterans and Robert Harvey would be eligible as well. Apart from a few older guys like Thompson, Young and Peckett, there was far too big a gap between our older/younger players this year.

10 years at the one club and you DO have to be at least 30 and only half the player's payment is counted in the salary cap. The 30 age limit is definitely there as Carey is a 12 year player at North but can't go onto the veterans list until 2002.

Groucho,

That makes quite a bit of sense. For my team, Harvey has played over 240 games and made his debut as a 16 year old in 1988. He turns 30 at the end of the 2001 season. (Well, a couple of days before the 2001 Grand Final) I would imagine that if Robert Harvey was eligible for the veterans list, he would be placed ahead of either Stewie or Burkey because he is on a lot more money than the other two. Like Carey, Harvey is then not eligible for the veterans list for the same reason.

I would have no doubt that with the amount of money Carey is earning, he would definitely be on the veterans list if he was allowed to be.
