A new thread called 'Academy Rule Changes'.

If history's any guide, this thread will get a lot of use over a long period of time.

In ten years when we're debating the AFL's decision to remove the last remaining academy concession, a 5% discount on players born within 750m of Brisbane's Central Business District and not having lived outside it for more than six consecutive hours, we'll look back on this as a golden age.
Actually it will be to the GPO because the actual CBD would be too generous. Then they will drill down to a particular room within the GPO, just for clarification.

Reckon we can get some extra government funding if we stick a maternity ward in there too?

I'm expecting yearly bumps at a minimum.

The problem is the AFL are trying to equalise the competition with all these rule changes to make it harder for Northern clubs to get local talent.

But until something is done about free agency, you can change all the rules in the world you want the competition is not going to be even.

The problem is the competition will never be equal. Vic Clubs will always have an advantage over the other Clubs. SA and WA clubs have an advantage over QLD and NSW clubs but no real advantage over VIC clubs. All QLD and NSW have is the academies and they will eventually take that off us.

I didn't get any bites on the main board for this suggestion but we could always just remove 8 victorian clubs or introduce and move clubs so there are 4 in each state. Making the amount of times teams have to travel equal. It would also make it harder to players to nominate a state to be traded to when there are only 2 teams. It makes it less likely Victorians can stay in Victoria.

it's even funnier because it will probably turn out to be scarily prophetic.

Nostra-dumb-ass might be more appropriate.

It is the major problem. VIC clubs have massive advantages. Less travel, Bulk Sponsors, Most players drafted are from Victoria and now there is players who just want to play for a big club in Footy Heartland of Victoria. The clowns won't even give us the bloody academies and the AFL won't sack up FFS.

We would play each of the Qld teams once, while Vic teams all play each other twice.:straining:

What shits me the most about all this. Is Hawthorn.

The Hawks get all this credit for being 'so successful in an era of equalisation' when what has really happened is they had the core group of players in place for success and were successful immediately before the significant dilution of the talent pool and the compromise of the draft by GC and GWS.

They were successful enough to be able to entice the one or two players needed through free agency to top up, and have never been at the bottom end of the ladder when the draft was most heavily effected. Geellong, Sydney, Hawks far from being strong in spite of equalisation have been able to stay strong because of the shoddy implementation of it and expansion.

With our financial situation and a dwindling return on investment, how long can we sustain an academy anyway? AFL have no long vision at all do they?

So what happens if you have your (eg) 5 picks, you pick player x with your first pick (pick 1) then someone bids at pick 2 for your prize academy recruit which you then match ... and in the process use up your other four 'live' picks - are you now let off from the whole 'must draft 3 per year' rule?

All your picks go to the end of the draft and you get to take them then instead.

i am finding hard to understand the bidding system.

as the ladder stands now we will have picks 2, 20,28, 56, 74, 92, 110.

hypothetically we take SPS with our pick 2, say Allison is bid on just before our pick 20 so we have enough points to cover him with that pick 20, what happens to our pick 28 and so on?

The same as last year - if the bid minus 20% requires less points than pick 20 is worth, we give up pick 20 and get some late pick back. If it's worth more points than pick 20 is worth, we give up pick 20 and 28 gets moved back a number of spots depending on how many more points we need to account for.

Ok - so the issue would be if you only have four remaining picks/list spots but the four you had didn't cover the cost of the pick 2 - you would be downgrading your first pick next year rather than using your notional pick 6 from this year?

Yes.

What annoys me, it's just another misguided half measure, easily manipulated by running a smaller list size, as pointed out.

The article uses us as an example, where we never actually made any of those 2 for 1 pick type of trades, our trades were all point orientated, but wasn't just about banking extra points, but finding value for both clubs.

Successful clubs will also find it easier to run smaller list too. GWS still have extra list space concessions, so this measure won't be stopping them from trading down this year.

This is genuinely amusing:

Why Callum Mills should be at another club

http://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/why...s/news-story/31eb4e45d992a3061dd5b177e693de91

Let me provide a very famous sporting example of how the Mills draft pick/points swap fiasco might have looked if it had happened in the NBA in, say, 1984:

— Michael Jordan (pick No. 3)

FOR

— Steve Colter (33), Charles Jones (36), Ben Coleman (37) and Greg WiItjer (43)

Wow, what a coincidence! Completely at random, he picked the year and the sport of one of the world's most famous athletes!

My son reckons you should not get access to your academy players if you finish in the top 8. Allows access to top players for the bottom finishing clubs and protects the ongoing viability of the academy system for when you really need it.

People don't bitch as much when the teams doing poorly get academy access, but they hate good teams using their academy access to stay in the top 8 forever.

I like the idea.

I would it expand it to free agency as well TBH.

I'm not sure I would deny access to the Academy, but I wouldn't be against losing the discount for top 8 finishes.

Certainly think FA could be looked at for that though. Can't keep having the strong get stronger
