Seems there are a few familiar surnames in that list - Dickfos, Kennedy, White - wonder if they are related to our former players

Not Max's boys...yet. Both are still tackers, maybe in a few more years.

However, now that Max is on the staff of Gold Coast as one of the strength and conditioning gurus and has become a permanent resident of the Gold Coast for the past year, (not to mention the way he was treated by the current Lions administration which led to his defection to the Suns), then I'm not so sure he would be rushing for his kids to sign as Lions should they ever be good enough to follow in Dad's footsteps.

Future Stars Selected

On Friday 12 November, the Hyundai Lions Academy held the Carnival Night for its ‘Future Stars’ program. The Future Stars is an Academy program designed to identify talented young footballers from age 12-13 who do not yet play AFL at a Club level.

Out of the 90 boys involved on the night, 20 were selected for inclusion in the 2011 Hyundai Lions Academy.

Cody Burdon (Cooroy State School)

I thought this would be a trimmed down list from the players in Blynd Freddie's post, but the players don't seem to match.

Maybe they will be aiming to cast a wide net in the u12 - 13 age group and trim things down as they get closer to draftable age and are doing more elite programs. That would probably make sense and would give more kids a taste.

With the sport becoming more popular in Queensland (and it will over time) this will become a very handy advantage. Surprised the likes of Collingwood and Essendon didn't try and veto this (probably tried but failed hehe)

We have a good chance of keeping a hold of this as four clubs are involved. Just as a Victorian kid has a good chance of staying in Victoria with so many Vic clubs, now NSW and Queensland lads have a slightly better chance of staying a bit closer to their families and friends.

As I understand it, the lads in BF's post - the initial Lions Academy Squad - are currently playing footy for a local AFL club or regional team.

The boys that are named in your post Grim - Future Stars - are those who do not currently play football at club level, hence they are all identified by the school they attend. IIRC all these boys are in year 7. They will be added to the initial Academy squad of 12-14 year olds.

The Gympie Times

The duo have just been included in the Lions Academy - a recruitment and training program put in place by the Brisbane Lions AFL club, to foster young footy talent.

Perry-Warren was chosen for the academy after excelling with the Queensland side, while Tompkins’ tall 180cm frame was spotted playing at the State Championships for Wide Bay.

I've seen a couple of these level 2 boys play and some have some real talent. A few to watch out for would be Logan Murray (they call him chopper) Seb Windsor who happens to be the son of ex Bear Ray Windsor
and Liam Dawson

At the Under 14 state championships this year, seen Seb play out of the half forward line and his combination with Logan playing out of the centre was great to watch as a midfielder logan reads the play well and has a beautiful delivery of the footy into the forward line.

Liam is a good strong forward with great hands and a good kick plays much in the style of Browny

AFL on the Downs has entered an exciting new phase after Tom Marshall was appointed the inaugural Darling Downs Lions Academy coach. The appointment of Marshall to the new position is seen as a major step forward in providing the region’s most talented young footballers with a pathway to the professional level of the game.
Marshall, a former Queensland representative and Brisbane Lions reserve team player, comes to the role with considerable experience.

Excellent idea. Hopefully the regional guys will live in the areas so that they are available and can become part of the infrastructure. Early identification and personal attention and the outlying areas feeling included in the process.

There is an exceptionally strong group of kids moving into the U16 age group this season, some of whom have been included in the academy which is great for our region. Darling Downs has been incorporated into the Western Taipans set up and that will undoubtedly strengthen our region. I was fortunate enough to be an assistant coach with the Taipans U14's last season and I can back up the claims of Logan "Chopper" Murray, he can go all the way, as can Seb Windsor and a few other guys in that side.:thumbsu:

Voss and club CEO Steven Wright launched the Lions Academy program for 2011 today.

The Academy - under new head coach Ben Dyer - aims to identify and develop Queensland talent and provide them with a pathway to the AFL.

This year about 120 players aged between 12 and 17 will participate in Academy programs with regional training centres planned for the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Wide Bay.

Lions Academy a stepping stone

YOUNG Brothers Bulldogs AFL Club dynamos Riley Blundell and Lachlan McGill will continue to be monitored by the Brisbane Lions with an eye to future careers with them after the club included the pair in their 2011 under-16 academy program.

Both are true all-rounders with Blundell having been on a Brisbane Broncos rugby league contract for the past two years, and it was extended for another year in November.

McGill, 15, of Shalom College, a giant who already stands at 188cm and is still growing, has also been a fixture in Wide Bay cricket teams, and he recently made an impressive A grade debut for his club, Brothers.

Sorry I'm just a bit clueless about it but what does the above post mean? Does it mean that this year we have chosen not to nominate any players we want to take before the draft?

Yeah, for this year.

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of our academy kids aren't draft age yet anyway. It will start bearing fruit in coming years.

I'm hoping for a decent upward curve as we progressively get kids that have been with the academy longer.

No academy players are playing under 18s this year.

In the under 16 group though we have a few that are in the squad. I have bolded those who are in our academy (based on the list on the page before).

Alexander- Crackel, Ethan - Labrador
Bertoli-Simmons, Hayden - Morningside
Bisset, Ben - Morningside
Bourke, Jordon - Morningside
Conway, Isaac - Sandgate
Davidson, Hamish - Capricornia
Davidson, Nick - Mt Gravatt
Dawson Liam - Redcliffe
Goodall, Jack - Cairns
Hay, Caleb - Northern Rivers
Hughes, Tye - Darling Downs
Klessens, Jarryd - Surfers Paradise
Mills, Steven - Capricornia
Niland-Rowe, Lachlan - Aspley
Nilmo, Ori - PNG Binatangs
Pendlebury, Bill - Morningside
Radford, Lewis - Everton

Rokeby, Isaac - Crusaders
Selman, Nick - Maroochydore
Smoothy, Haydn - Maroochydore
Southern, Zac - Nambour
Tickner, Cain - Noosa
Uebergang, Matthew - Ipswich

Wardle, Jermaine - Cairns
Watts, Angus - Labrador

Players to be considered when fit
Coutts, Steven - Mt Gravatt (ankle)
Ellis, Jarred - Broadbeach (ankle)
Forbes, Brad - Pomona (ribs)
Gray, Jackson - Rookie Search (thigh)
Jackson, Nick - Aspley (groin)
Rutledge, Aden - Sandgate (leg)

There are a few in there who are in our areas but are not in the academy. Hopefully if they perform we can snaffle them. I note the U16 Champs seem to be in Blacktown in July. I might have to try and head down there and watch a few games and see how our guys go.

The academy guys are doing well for the undefeated Qld team. From the last match the only non-lions player in the best was Bourke who I think is eligble for the Lions (although he might be eligible for Geelong as a father/son as well)

Queensland 2-3 6-6 11-7 14-7 (91)
NSW/ACT 3-4 5-10 7-12 8-20 (68)

Queensland Goals: Bourke 8, Gribble, Selman, Pendlebury, Dawson, Mills, Hay.

Queensland Best: Radford, Conway, Southern, Bourke, Ruttledge, Pendlebury.
