Bourke played 102 games for Geelong (and 22 for the Bears).

Might be a dumb q, but any GC lads in that squad quigley?

Will be *very* interesting to see how successful the academies are over the next two/three years.

From match one. Only Conway and Tickner (capt and vice) are ours in this one. I think Tickner is a bottom aged player this year.

Match Details
Queensland 17-11 (113)
Northern Territory 9-13 (67).

GOALS
Queensland: Bourke 6, Mills 3, Davidson 3, Rokeby 2, Bisset, Selman, Conway
Northern Territory: McDonald 2, Rioli 1, McCauliffe 1, Simpson, McGarvie, Wasley-Black, Johanssen, Motlop

BEST
Queensland: Gribble, Bourke, Davidson, Rokeby, Conway, Tickner
Northern Territory: Ankers, Rioli, Waley-Black, Ross, Richardson, McCauliffe

Edit - Gribble is also one of ours who came from outside the initial squad. Note Stiller is also in the squad now and is one of ours as well.

Don't know Bob I assume that they would be but I haven't really checked. There are very few from their zones in the teams though. It would be stupid to keep their youngsters out of the rep teams.

A little off topic but was just wondering how our zones and the GC zones work? Do we each have certain parts of QLD that is ours or what?

Seems like they have a much larger piece of the pie in that graphic. Is it thought that we were quite routed on that deal?

*shrug* There's an awful lot of outback there. Time will tell.

Population wise it's probably comparable. The Lions do have most/all of Brisbane, for example.

Our geographic area is much easier to monitor and foster as well.....quality over quantity is the end result we are looking for.

Couple of old articles on Tickner (and Laskey):

Tiger cubs make state teams, June '09

Cain Tickner has been selected as the only U14 to make the U15 Queensland Secondary Schoolboys Team, to compete in the national championships at the end of July.

Cain first pulled on the boots as a six-year-old, playing for Noosa U8s. But that was no surprise with dad Dan being a former AFL player...

The winner of the Jason Akermanis `Player of Carnival’ Trophy at the State Titles in Mackay in 2007, Cain is also an U14s Suncoast Power representative.

Cain named in Aussie merit team, Aug '10

After representing Queensland at the under-15 national schoolboys AFL championships in Perth last month, Cain is hoping his best is yet to come.

Snapped up by Lions after being awarded the Jason Akermanis Trophy for the best-and-fairest player at the national under-12 schoolboys championships in 2007, Cain has trained with the squad since.

AFL Lions Academy manager Luke Curran said Cain had continued to improve his game since being picked up.

“He’s a good athlete … he’s got a good mark and a good kick,” Curran said.

Cain said his ultimate goal was to play AFL for the Brisbane Lions.

The AFL has released rankings of the top 25 under-16 prospects in the country based on comprehensive testing at the U16 draft combine (tested on 20m sprint, agility run, standing vertical jump, running vertical jump (off right and left feet), shuttle run, the Nathan Buckley kicking test and the Matthew Lloyd clean hands test).

Two Queenslanders have made the top 25 ranking.

Zac Southern (9th) and Matt Uebergang (13th)

Both players are signed with the Brisbane Lions Academy.

Cain Tickner has been named in the AIS Academy for next year. He looks like a great prospect lets hope he continues to develop.

The other Qlders named were Bourke and Clay Cameron both of whom turn 17 this year. Bourke played as an overaged player at the Champs this year hence he is not in the Lions academy which starts with kids a year younger than him. Cameron played in the u18 champs this year.

Qld only managed one player in the u16 element of the academy despite winning the Div 2 Champs pretty easily and only 4 Div 2 players all up. I thought this was pretty crap by the AFL.

Bourke can go father/son to Geelong. Will be interesting to see how he develops. I watched him play on the weekend and he is super athletic for his size and has good goal sense etc. There is just a part of me holding off as I think it is a bit of a case of man vs boy at the moment.

Cameron was one I mentioned to keep an eye out for at the champs. Super athlete with vice like hands. If he grows a couple more cm he should be one of the best KPF out of QLD in a fair while. His last 3 weeks in the Mt Gravatt seniors have serious people talking this guy up..big time.

Uebergang can play. If he continues to develop he should be one to look out for. Haven't seen much of Southern yet. Once I do I'll report back.

With a name like that, surely he's made for professional sport in some concern. I can imagine commentators wetting themselves with delight.

Just to clarify, do we have first dibs on some of these kids?

We get first dibs on kids in our academy, similar to father/son picks (see the first couple of posts in the thread). So that includes Tickner, Uebergang and Southern, among many others (there's a list earlier in the thread).
