The U18 team has been released for the Champs. The guys I think are from our Academy (I haven't checked) are Sam Gribble, Isaac Conway, Aden Rutledge, Cain Tickner, Lachlan Niland-Rowe, Bill Pendlebury, Jackson Gray, Zac Southern.

Congrats to all those guys and I am looking forward to watching them play. I will watch the Qld team play in the first two rounds against WA and then against Vic Country. Hopefully all of our guys play and I can give everyone a few thoughts. Any Qld locals might want to get down to Yeronga on 23 June to watch the Qld team go around against Tasmania.

It's worth noting that the players mentioned are all first year players and are part of a 40 man squad. They might or might not get games.

Conway, Rutledge, Tickner and gribble all in current squad of 30 thats been together for couple months and played in first practice match couple of weeks ago - suspect first 3 at least likely to play most games if remain fit. Others not training with squad at present so won't play unless called in during series to cover injuries, poor form etc of some in current 30.

18 yo's too old for Academy - 17's first group lions can access via academy bidding system (sure they will be watching Coneay and Tickner closely over next 6 weeks) -but doesn't mean Lions don't have their eye on the older boys - the academy trained the Brisbane and sunshine coast boys all preseason - if someone they rate who Suns don't want they can try to do a deal to get predraft (like Zorko), and still have access to Qld boys via rookie draft (eg Michael from last years state 18's)

“And I thought 16-year-old Isaac Conway equipped himself quite well in his first senior game for the club. It was a tough one to start in but he was nice and clean. He looked very comfortable out there and he’ll be a very good player”.

Oh and one of our kids gives me the opportunity to post this up:

Has Scott got a brother?

It has been very common over the last couple of years for guys to come from outside the initial squad for the back half of the champs. Admittedly that might have been because we have done appallingly most years. Hopefully the coaching staff this year is a step up. A bit of continuity in selection would help the players.

I agree that Conway, Rutledge and Tickner are the guys we are most likely to see.

From outside the 30 man squad the guy I think might get a look in later is perhaps Jackson Gray. I think they might be keen to give the big skinny ruck a game or two.

Gribble and Tickner are looking good so far today. Conway doesn't seem to be getting much time on ground.

Edit: Rutledge also looking solid as a KPD. Didn't realisehe was one of our's.

You little ripper. :thumbsu:

Kevin Sheehan

QLD pull off remarkable 2 point win over WA with 2 goals to Tickner in last 2 mins !!‪#nabaflu18s‬

So Tickner kicked at least 4 goals?

Is it too soon to start the bandwagon? :D

Tickner

Tickner is a 16-year-old, 190cm-tall half-back or half-forward.

"Cain hasn't made his senior debut yet but I would suggest he would have, had he not had some trouble with injury," Fletcher said.

"Both have got a good amount of ability, they're very athletic and both have got very bright futures."

Jono Freeman was a standout all day, presenting constantly and working tirelessly to finish with roughly a dozen marks (many contested) and four goals.

The Under 18 Tigers game against Sandgate was a real arm wrestle over the first three quarters, with very little separating the sides.

Cain Tickner provided the individual highlight with a four-bounce effort starting from half back and slotting through a major from 45m out!

I'd actually pick Gribble as having the best overall game today (will be curious to see how many possessions he got), but Tickner looked great in the second half.

Good to hear. Playing on the wing as named?

The Brisbane Lions are pleased to announce that Hyundai Brisbane Lions Academy player Cain Tickner has been signed to an extended AFL Club agreement for 2012 and 2013.
While the 17 year-old Queenslander won’t reach the eligible drafting age this year, his signing to the scholarship-type program is a major step towards him potentially being recruited to the Lions with a priority selection before the 2013 AFL National Draft.

The drafting of Academy players works in a similar fashion to that of the pre-existing AFL Father-Son bidding system, whereby the Lions will have first and last rights to bid for Tickner’s services at the end of next year should they wish to draft him.

The exact draft selection used will be dependent on potential bids from rival clubs.

Interesting. Sounds like the Academy is a two step process. First is just identifying and training a lot of the kids, and the second is signing them to an "extended AFL Club agreement" in the lead up to the draft they qualify for.

I assume there is money involved and that it is outside the cap. I'm guessing these "extended AFL Club agreements" would have been similar to what GWS and Gold coast would have had for their players prior to them fielding teams in the AFL.

I have watched the first two Qld games against WA and Vic Country and there is certainly a lot to like with Conway. I was really impressed with his game against WA but probably a bit less so against Country.

At the moment Conway is predominantly an inside mid and as he showed against WA he can potentially be a very good one. He was regularly at the bottom of packs against the Sand Gropers and got his hands to the ball first on a lot of occasions. He attacked the packs well.

Against Country he tended to be more interested in finding a player first and then getting behind that player thus ensuring he would be second to the ball if it came that way. This is something the Lions do too much as well and I fear this could be something that is coached into him. FFS this kid could be one of the best if not the best clearance players in his age group. The opposition should be the ones worried about finding him and stopping him rather than the other way around.

Against Country he also hung around the outside of packs too much and did not attack the contest as I would like to see him do. He has a good solid body and really nice awareness of what is around him when in tight. If anyone in the Qld team would be able to extract the ball it was him and he should be getting in there rather than hanging on the outside waiting to receive.

One thing which he did do against Vic Country though was take some really nice contested marks. He marked the kick in a time or two and came away with some other marks against bigger opposition. He was showing Bartel like marking ability for a midfielder which is really encouraging. He was very clean and his hands were very strong.

Skills wise he is a bit of a mix. He can sometimes balloon his kicks a little too much but on others punch in nice little passes. His option taking looks good and he executed more often than not. I am not sure he has a particularly big leg on him but he is reasonable. By hand he has nice quick hands and gets the ball where it needs to go.

That is probably the last time I will see him this year and hopefully when I get to see him next year he will be dominating at this level. He certainly has the potential and I think maybe just has to realise it himself. He is as good as anyone running around out there he just needs to believe that. I want to him improved his endurance over the next year and at the next Champs hunt the ball first, second and third and be the guy that the opposition worry about.

and tickner looks a good size for a future key forward , a must have all right !! pity he was a bulldogs supporter, guess we can rid that from him !!
