Hi all,

My other half is doing quite well for herself and recently got offered a role with a team in the QRL. She pondered the question; did i want to redesign their jerseys?

Of course I do, but I am terrifically rusty.

How would you approach it? I am thinking a whole rebrand with a proper agency would be smarter, but I am doing my best to gather info and understand the thought process that goes into rugby league jerseys.

Cheers!

This is how I'd go about it, as a complete hobbyist who has never had this opportunity.

Start off with a little folio/mood board - look at the history of the club, their current and previous jerseys, the previous logos, the icons of the town/city that may work in a design.
Look at the other teams within the league, what designs/colours to avoid (especially rivals).
Look at any designs you love elsewhere in the country/world that you could use as inspiration, and then start sketching like crazy. You could start off with complete replicas in the team's colours, and then branch out to make it more unique if necessary.

Once you've got a few that you think could work, digitise them properly with colours and present your favourite options.

Would love to see the final result, even if it's not selected - always exciting to see people here get opportunities like this!

I would work directly with the supplier of the jerseys (if you need a new one let me know ;). You can do your idea and a brief and their inhouse designers can help you put the rest together. Cheaper than using an agency as most suppliers won't charge for artwork. They will also be able to suggest ideas so you can bounce things off together.

Thanks for that! It's an interesting experience, and I think it will be an interesting challenge.

As part of it, I was actually told "we need the logo to face the other way as well". Fortunately I had been working on the same animal for another project so had a modernised version of the same thing basically already.

Cheers mate! It looks like they have a supplier already, so will have to understand constraints and things like sponsorship placement, should be fun!

Just have fun with it - being on here, you’d have a good understanding of what makes a kit design good and this is a cool opportunity for you.

I always try and integrate some club identity into apparel (or sports design in general) - be that local imagery, stylised designs that represent something meaningful or things that have significant meaning to the players/organisation. It’s not always possible to do those things though and these are just my starting points.

Can’t wait to see where this lands Nickimus Rex

Something I focused on, for my first proper project, was how I could modernise what they currently have and make it just as good, if not better
I fast found that the entire QRL is basically the same design re-hashed or recoloured. Rugby league is on the whole a lot of horizontal stripes or Vs, so finding something slightly unique-ish without being crazy will be the fun part.

yeah can be like that with rugby and English football, yeah, that will be the challenge: finding anything slightly different or unique they have used might help, even if it's an old warm-up kit jacket or jumper, helped me with a local soccer club, they still use one of my designs as an alt kit

Just an update on this - my designs have unofficially been approved. This accidentally included a rebrand and new logo as well.

I will share more when I can :)
Please stop having all these accidents, you're making the rest of us look like underachievers :tongueoutv1:

Would love to know the QRL club. If it’s my beloved Easts Tigers you leave those jerseys alone. They’re sacred.

If you’re based in Brisbane go to a BCC or equivalent library. There’s some good books on local rugby league there. I can’t remember the name of the book but it has Wally Lewis on the cover and it’s a season by season picture book for the QRL up until the Broncos. Easts have a good 75 year history book too.

Join “Brisbane Rugby League Memories” on Facebook. Heaps of photos in there. The admin will ban you if you ask to buy or sell anything so be warned.

I've done a bunch of research on it (and had some good chats with Supercheapgiants), and no it is not Easts!

Cheers for the tips, though :)
