Theoretically, different artists, different approaches to casting. Some filmmakers want a performative performance, like Joaquin Phoenix in Joker. Some people want to strip away all the actor bullshit and artifice and use actors more like models, like Clint Eastwood did by casting the real life heroes in The 15:17 to Paris.
I think issue is with representation. With Hollywood, if you only cast based on box office appeal, you only wind up casting from the pool of stars you think you have. Hence the justification of casting Emma Stone in Aloha, which is already pre-loaded because there aren't a ton of Asian-American stars in Hollywood. I saw some clip of Josh Thomas, of all people, go viral a few weeks ago because he was saying something stupid like, "I don't cast actors of colour because they didn't have enough experience", and it's like, gee, I wonder why that is.
