His WAFL form has been pretty poor and needs to have a big 2006. Spent a large part of the season playing for West Perth reserves. Might be better suited to a key defensive post because his form at full forward and centre half forward has been patchy.

I've got big questions why he was given a contract extension. It just doesn't make sense. There's some kids performing in the WAFL that would have been a better investment than Campbell. Why resign a kid that can't crack a game at the level below AFL?

Hoepfully he explodes onto the scene. But i can't see what attribute can be learnt in a preseason that could take a player from WAFL reserves to AFL.

I thought his pre-season was pretty good - I remember seeing him a couple of times and thinking, this guy's a player! I think his early season form (first 6 weeks or so) for the Cardies was reasonably good too... but then he lost some form, was dropped and then never really got it together again. He was signed up quite early in the year, so they obviously think he's capable of sustaining some good form in the long term.

Hasn't played Aussie rules all that long still learning the game. Pity he was re-signed should have gorn the same route as second chance - dopped back to the rookie list still young enough ie swap with second chance.

I think Dominguez is right about playing Campbell in the backline for the Falcons - he's got good size and athletic, he just looks a little lost when I've seen him playing at CHF.
He's a New Zealander like Trent Croad so that could explain a bit about his formative years in the AFL!

I used to scratch my head when Scotty Thornton was kept on the list year after year without getting a game as probably did many others.

They obviously see something in him as they did with Scotty.

Spot on; I remember having exactly the same thoughts. Also with Peake there were a number of posts about what a waste of a third round draft choice he was.

If you are dropped from the list (hoping to be re-contracted onto the Rookie list), then you need to enter the draft proper, which means he can be picked by any other club.

More than happy to trust the recruiting and coaching staff of Campbell.

I'm pretty sure that Thornton had injuries. Injuries are very different to being fit and playing reserves.

Yep the one who spotted Sandilands and put him on the Rookie list, did pretty well. Not even many ardent Gummy supporters thought he would make it past a couple of WAFL games.

I agree with your comment, if it is applied to the era before CC. We were shocking at the drafting & recruiting game during that time. You can not apply the same comment to the way freo has drafted & recruited since the arrival of CC. Now whether this is due to CC, a change in management & or policy, your guess is as good as mine. You CAN NOT however deny that we have been successful, particularly in the rookie draft. It all seemed to change with the arrival of Cameron Schwab.

So you are happy with the way schofield, jcarr & hedland have performed being prized recruits. I'd say for the price paid for these guys they have turned out to be poor decisions. Indeed, isn't cc now stating that your midfield needs bolstering which is a clear meaage that their midfield recuitments have not performed.

Let's just say, since the cc & schab inc. have taken over the reigns at freo, they have spent more money on player recruitment without onfield success.

Scohfield= No but that was a PS draft that cost little
J Carr has had his best season ever.
Headland has been been than he is given credit for, He has been a soft target for detractors.

Since they have been here we have won better than every second game compared to Just under every 4th game under Drummie on average & just over every 3rd with Neesh.

The way I stay sane is to think that CC & Swabbie basically started again from scratch in 2002 with 8 uncontracted players and a few draft picks. (Pav , Hase , J Lo , Bell , Cookie , M Carr , Macca , Parker) because basically that is what they have done.

Whoever came in at the end of 2001 was always going to be reasonably successful because of the draft picks aquired from the previous lean run. Drummy was a poor coach but wasn't helped by the recruiting under Neesham. A lot of draft picks were traded who would heve been good players by the time Drum arrived and would be in their prime now. We were gauranteed to improve in 2002. Luke McPharlin, Trent Croad, Troy Simmonds, Paul Medhurst, Jeff Farmer and Graham Polak all arrived at the end of 2001. That's a pretty handy addition to any side, with Heath Black, Adrian Fletcher and Daniel Bandy the only significant departures.

Do you reckon any one else but Swabbie would have been able to do the same with what we had and who wanted out?

I don't

We got Croad & Macpharlap for 1, 20 , 36
Simmonds in a 3 way deal for Bandy
Farmer for Black
Medders for Schell pick 56
Browne for our 4th round Pick

Don't forget Drummie traded off Clement , Holland & Sinclair just as they were getting to the useful 40-70 game mark.

Pretty handy boost along I would have thought.

Still only 15 Afl players if you count Grover and consider that Polly only effectively played 4 games in 2002 .

Why would you care how Schofiled has has performed. As a minimal cost player he has met expectations. Carr has been a real asset and Headland has so far been disappointing in that he he has not "starred", but has just been a good ordinary player. There is no doubting their talent, which was well spotted.

Now your changing your post to be about value for money; different subject. Either way you're a pinhead.
