Judd has been rated in various years as the best player in the league. Goodes is a star player and as soon is he is eligible will go into the Hall of fame. But he hasnt got the consistancy from week to week that Judd has. Even this year he was either hot or warm depending the week, until the last 5/6 games. Because he is eye catching when he plays well, he gets votes. (Judd does as well)

The brownlow is not a guide to the best player in the league in any one particular year. Goodes in one year he won the brownlow was rated 4th best in his own teams B&F.

Judd has won 5 B&Fs - that is an unbelievable strike rate, plus I dont believe he has ever been lower than 3rd place in his teams B&F - and that includes his first year when he was 18. That is an unbelievable level of consistancy.

yeh spot on jd1991.

The consistency is ridiculous!

-2002 = (First year) 3rd best and fairest.
-2003 = 2nd best and fairest.
-2004 = Brownlow, Best and fairest. All Australian.
-2005 = 2nd best and fairest. Norm Smith Medal
-2006 = Best and fairest. All Australian. Premiership Captain.
-2007 = yeh not a great year due to injury - did poll in the first 8 games of the Brownlow.
-2008 = Best and fairest. All Australian (Captain)
-2009 = Best and fairest. All Australian
-2010 = Brownlow, Best and fairest. All Australian
-2011 = Great season, defs AA (cpt?), probs B&F, probs Brownlow.

Judd isn't even in the top 5 midfielders in the league. Can run and that's about it.
Judd hangs off the pack waiting for cheap possessions; can't take an over head mark; backs out of contests; doesn't play any sort of defense; doesn't tackle a moving player; doesn't kick goals; doesn't perform against the top sides; misses easy shots on goal; can't handle physicality; has to rely on AFL/Umpire bias to win him free kicks; and the list goes on....

Goodes is more versatile and kicks goals. Can play forwards, midfield, back (probably not as a key defender) and even played ruck in his earlier days. Take Judd out of the midfield and he's about as useful as Betts against a top 8 side.

Goodes by a long way although he needs to stop whinnging in the umpires ears/face.

????? We talking about the same Chris Judd here?

re: The Swans best & fairest... In Goodes' defence our best and fairest is a bit of a farce. Players like Goodes are marked very, very harshly by our coaches. If you look over the results you'll find it reads more like an encouragement award for rookies and new recruits.

I've got no problem with them rewarding improvement and effort but it's not an award based on output alone. If it was, Goodes would have racked up about 6 of them so far.

I know it's all ifs, buts and maybes, but Goodes should really have at least 2 other B&F's to his name. Last year and 2007. And should have been much closer in 2009 than he was.

It was just ludicrous how harshly he was marked by Roos and co. I hope Longmire doesn't pull any crap this year. There's no way that anybody except Goodesy should win the Skilton this year.

I think to compare them is ridiculas, completely different players. For me it is Goodes, he is my favourite player and I feel gets alot of crap from other team supporters etc. They would love to have him though, and the same for Judd. They both have outstanding careers and both are extremely professional footballers as well as respected people. I have a problem with people saying they are both overrated, clearly with either in their team your onto a winner. Carlton and the SWans are lucky to have Judd and Goodes. Goodes is a freak and a once in a lifetime player, he stands above the others.

Judd ... can't take an over head mark

Well, this is awkward.

I would love to know what the OPs obsession is with Carlton or Carlton players.

FWIW, Judd's best is better. They are both superstars. Goodes has prob had a slightly better year.

Judd easily. If Goodes had more superstars around him he'd struggle to poll 20 brownlow votes a season and wouldn't have a brownlow.

I agree with this. Don't think he would have gotten to the 2 brownlows. Wouldn't have bet against him winning one though...

But with Judd, he was a 21 year old super star amongest older stars at WCE. Now he is a Super star amoungest younger stars at Carlton.

I'd take Judd.

Goodes is the better all round footballer, I'd also like to see how Judd is going when he is 31 and on the verge of 300 games.

At their best they are both great players, but Judd has had more very good 'Non-Brownlow' years.

Judd for me.

Well said. I rate consistently, versatility and flexibility very highly and Goodes ticks all these boxes. He can play the inside role in the middle then burst out the back door with his run and carry. He can play ruck with his vertical leap, he can play forward by taking big contested marks, he can play the defensive role by edging out opponents with his body strength and of course he can kick goals.

Goodes is the complete package as far as a star footballer goes. I hope he wins the brownlow because Goodesy is easily better then Judd in terms of quality spread.

My biggest issue with Goodes is that while he can do these things, he very rarely does. Has been protected - or given a bit of a free ride. Could have been a much more imposing and valuable player by being a dominant CHF or ruck but has been allowed the luxury to be a 20 possession a game, unaccountable midfielder that has some brilliant periods and plenty of periods where he goes missing.

Franklin gets about as much of the footy and kicks close to 4 goals a game.

Judd is regularly brilliant and pretty much always a contributor.

Goodes got my vote because he is just such a versatile player. Is able to play as a tall forward, be put in the midfield and have an impact and is just a pretty solid all round player. Judd is an elite midfielder, without a doubt but great midfielders are in every side, whereas a player like Goodes who has the skills and versatility to be thrown into a number of different positions is a rarer player.

Goodes also has lifted his side many times and when he gets going he's a pleasure to watch.

Judd is one of the better midfielders in the AFL, Ablett is better, Swan is probably equal to or just ahead of him now. Judd over his career has been great to watch also and at some stages has changed games with his clearance work.

However, I rate Goodes as the better player by the narrowest of mergin
