In European football if you celebrate a goal by what is deemed to inflame or antagonize the opposition fans you are penalized by a card , suspension or fine. Why is it that an aboriginal man can aggressively charge at a group of opposition fans and not be penalized? People argue well it was a celebration of his heritage! Well do you think he could've celebrated his heritage and his goal by doing what he did to his own supporters or teammates and then hugging them afterwards? Doesn't he understand how this could culturally inflame a situation or upset white people who couldnt understand the unique celebration? Should we bow down to his superior knowledge of aboriginal culture and accept that he upsets white people through his actions? Adam Goodes needs to grow up and stop playing the race card otherwise he will drift into insignificance and not garner the support he deserves for race related issues in this country.

Whatever, you are being pedantic and precious

Just watched his presser, congrats Goodes you Flog, you have made this round all about you again.
He had just kicked a goal, in a round celebrating indigenous culture...it's more about him than it is you, the Carlton fans, Eddie McGuire et al.

I felt a bit sorry for those Carlton supporters who in the aftermath had the TV cameras focussing on them, pretty much insinuating that they must have racially abused Adam for him to react like that. I don't feel sorry for the supporter who got thrown out for taunting the Sydney supporters.
Are there Tv cameras at Afl grounds...gee since when?
Seriously you are public property when you are int he outer...buyer beware.

Probably because Adam Goodes is not playing European football.

So why not dance towards his own fans?
Maybe he is just truly at-wits-end tired of the constant stream of abuse he gets from opposition fans these days and lost it a bit?

For whatever reason he gets an unreasonable level of hatred from them these days. I truly don't know the real cause of the groupthink taking over as he is nowhere near the stager or thug some other current players are and there are other indigenous players and other players with opinions; he gets far more abuse than he deserves and I would have snapped before this if it was directed at me.

Helps when you aren't having to design your rules with Balkans ultra-nationalists in mind.

It's at the stage now where instead of taking a higher ground, Goodes is using division to face his demons.

Would take a big character to settle this booing issue in a respectful manner but with his onfield diving and umpire playing, it's hardly surprising he's bringing the situation to boiling point through negativity.

Would be challenging to be in his position, as the general public are often fairly simple beings.. If a kid sees a big dark skinned guy with a full beard... It's not against the laws of nature for them to relate it to what they know.

If a player has long hair and gets called a girl, often they will cut it to avoid further discrimination. Not goodes, he antagonises the situation until it boils over.

Regardless of his motives and insecurities there is general angst that is coming to the surface and would be exactly the same if Goodes was instead gay, asian, muslim, jewish, disabled etc.

He's bringing a social issue to the front pages, but by being a flog.

It's Jerry springer 101.

With the full backing of a PC media and AFL, it's probably good these issues get faced, even if Goodes does it to take the focus away from being disliked because of his relationship with umpires and his tactics.

He's cornered himself into playing the race card. For where his career sits with retirement approaching, it's probably in his interests to divide and conquer rather than take a humble path.
Agree with your post, but the thing is booing isn't an issue, he has tried to make it one to look like a victim. There's a few people in every team that get booed, of all skin colours, the thing they have in common is that they have at one point done something on field to annoy opposition supporters, whether it be a suspension, diving, not being reported for a cheap shot, admitting to taking performance enhancing drugs etc... The fans don't forget.

I think that Adam Goodes opinion on the celebration of his culture carries weight. I don't know that either of ours does.

Agree?
Like any player, the appropriateness of what they do on a football field is open to debate from the wider football community. No player simply gets to say "I did that and hence my opinion is the only one that matters". Goodes may feel that he is representing Indigenous people when taking the playing field, which is great, but it shouldn't be ignored he is also representing his club and the league itself; thus, his actions carry diverse responsibilities. In acknowledging this, the authorities, if you want to use that word, that hold right to an opinion will be equally diverse. The weight each of these opinions hold is purely subjective.

Because we don't have a history of crowd violence like European football. Read Fever Pitch, the awesome novel by Nick Hornby of what happened to him when I think it was Charlie George gave the forks to opposition fans (Derby?). He (as a 14 year old) was chased back to his train with bottles being thrown at him by opposition supporters. Thank God, we don't have that here.

Will do with the self-research.

Life expectancy is definitely an issue. However I don't understand how that is an aboriginal rights issue.

If it's to do with healthcare, I always thought there were government programs where med graduates were relocated to those communities (could be wrong on that though). Sort of like an internship.

I think life expectancy is more due to drug/alcohol/violence abuse problems in those communities. In that case, I don't think it's so much an aboriginal rights issue, but more of a cultural modification issue for those communities.
With healthcare while there are a few who want to work out there in those conditions a lot are sent while they are trying to get jobs back in more comfortable areas. So they aren't committed to long term outcomes. It's part of the reason to try and get medical students from rural/ remote areas as they are more likely to work in those areas.

Myself I have no intention of going to work in the outback because the work is too challenging.

So, to summarise, your views are exactly the same as the strawman that you claim was being forced upon you?

Don't describe me by the colour of my skin.
ok. i'm not not
No doubt the media have set this whole story up. Without their input Goodes is just another unlikable football player who is boo'd, there are plenty of them. No story, move on.

But surely you can see that he hasn't exactly helped things. Doing a war dance directly at Carlton fans, knowing full well the reaction it would get, was antagonistic. Its not better than just giving them the finger.

He's had a few opportunities to be the bigger man and rarely taken it.
"be the bigger man" translates as not be an uppitty blackfellow and say bad things about Australia??

Probably because if you deliberately antagonise a crowd of European football fans you will get Neo-nazi marches and riots. Perhaps best to avoid that.

... It turns the debate away from booing or even the reason for doing it. Now we get to discuss whether we have problems with an indigenous man expressing pride in his heritage. It doesn't matter IMHO whether he directed the dance to Carlton supporters who would have been the ones booing him or Swans fans or fellow players. It was great theatre and a great response to the situation.

Adam Goodes has every right to think the way he thinks and to act the way he acts. However, I think he should choose to act differently at times.

I believe that the way Nicky Winmar expressed pride in his heritage was far more measured and effective than what we saw last night.
