Thats what they said about Daniel Bandy too ;)

Bandy had a pretty good AFL career before numerous injuries in 03/04 finished his career - which is why he ended up playing in the WAFL. He had numerous good seasons with the miserably performed Dockers, and his 2002 season with the Dogs (the last before numerous injuries struck) was quite reasonable. The percentage of draftees who go on to play 150 games is not high...Bandy never achieved what he was probably capable of, but you could do far worse.

I think Patto is going to be a better player, though I do acknowledge there are some similarities.

look i dont think anyone is having a go at the kid noones asking for him to be delisted.

Never suggested they were claw...just giving my assessment of his game on Friday night. Put it this way...if any of our similarly aged smalls from his draft (Deledio, Tambling, Polo, Meyer etc) had played as the number one onballer, picked up 21 possessions and finished the game so strongly, we'd be pretty happy right? At his size, Patto should be well behind them, but after the last couple of weeks he's as well on track as any of them IMO.

my stance has always been we should not have used pick 16 on him. you yourself rate him as only becoming a second string ruckman to me thats a wasted 1st round pick.

It's way too early to tell. He may blossom along the lines Simmonds did by his mid 20's and become a genuine first option ruckman - not outstanding, but capable. Failing that, a 2nd string ruckman who can hurt the opposition around the ground is a far more valuable asset than an average ruckman with no other strings to their bow - yet you often as not still pay through the nose for a mature average ruckman if you want to recruit one.

This way we're growing our own - and he's got the right attitude and heart to become a consistent performer who gives his all week in week out. That and staying fit and injury free are priceless for a club trying to build squad depth starting from nothing.

Only time will tell if he was worth pick 16 or not...I suspect there'll be quite a few from that 'superdraft' who don't achieve what Patto looks capable of.

Bandy certainly was more then handy for fremantle and the Bulldogs.

Truth be told Patto will probably use comments like mine to become a very a capable AFL footballer. Maybe i just wish he had that something special about him.

Dont think Pattison has deiciencies i think his problem is has no stand out quality at AFL level. His disposal isnt the best. He isnt overly quick. His hands are good not great. He seems to think as slowly as he moves on the field. All he has is a real big wind tank, unfortunetly that's not enough.

He is Daniel Bandy Mark II
i wasnt going to go down a full on bagging path of pattison but imo he does indeed have serious deficiencies. he is slow his agility is abysmal he cant kick over a jam tin hes an inbetween size for a ruckman kpp with out a leap. with all this im prepared to wait and see for a couple of yrs against all my instincts.pick 16 on this kid i still shake my head.

Mate i just gave an appraisal of where i believe pattison is at as a footballer and where he will end up. That is a ruckmen with a big motor but very little else. When Daniel Bandy was drafted by Fremantle he was a ruckmen who could run all day and had pretty good agility for a guy who was 200cm tall. He played about 150 games. Yet he struggled at AFL level and found his place at WAFL.

I think its similar with Patto. He has a turning circle the size of the Q.E.2. He is slow. His skills are below average. He is a okay mark and is alright below his knees. His ruckwork is average. He does run all day and works very hard. He is one of those players that will probably be too good for VFL not good enough for AFL.

If you think he can make it AFL level tell me what attributes other then fitness will see him make the cut??
absolutely right. a few astute judges at pre are lamenting the fact that a player like patto will indeed play 150 games for us. when we should be making hard decisions and cutting our losses rather than cluttering up our list with bandy hall gaspar krakouer tivendale types. these types have chronic weaknesses who will take us nowhere because of their obvious deficiencies.why is it the club cannot identify and target well rounded players who can run and kick a bloody football.

It's true that he is undersized. But so is everyone against guys like Sandilands...

Perhaps they drafted him thinking that he would grow a bit more, or perhaps they want more of a utility type who can win it around the ground at expense of centre bounces?

He's only young, I will give him another year before I think he is the next Matty Francis (and then we can ship him off to Collingwood anyway).

so on the back of one quarter's stats you have come up with this?
I direct your attention to your Bandy analogy.
Yes he had a few reasonable seasons, that made the difference to the teams he was having them for.;)
