The situation is not exactly the same though.
Daniher is a RFA - if Essendon match and a deal can’t be done is not guaranteed any contract level in the national draft, should he enter it. That means he is more likely to stay at Essendon or there are clubs that would love a cheap key forward before Brisbane’s pick.
Not so many clubs looking for a HBF.
This is also the reason why PSD is often a better option for players wanting to set terms.

Players who aren't draftees can set their terms for the National Draft. See Luke Ball.

Players nominate for the draft on the proviso that they play for whoever selects them. Players who have already played for a club can nominate for the ND or pre-season draft and nominate the terms they wish to play for, so any club would have to pay what Saad nominates as his terms, even us.

If he says I want $1M in year one to fend off other interest, we too HAVE to pay him that figure in year one, and yes we could then offer heavily reduced for the rest.

My point I was mainly making was.

If you go in to the draft, you must play for whoever picks you, you can’t sit out for a year because you didn’t want to move to Brisbane or wherever.
You could half arse it.

There are wider repercussions at play than winning a trade here. Last thing we want is a recurring theme that a player nominating us won’t necessarily result in a trade being done. This will be sorted out in time and saady will look great in navy

Agree that it does not matter what you paid after the event, but we need collateral for our Oliver Trade also...

Easy solution: Trade Pick 7 and a future 3rd round pick to Geelong for its two 1st Round Picks this year.

Use one of the 1st Round Picks on Saad in the the national draft (i.e. don't trade with Essendon). We can use the other 1st round pick together with our future 1st round pick next year to trade for a gun established midfielder like Clayton Oliver or Ollie Wines.

We will make the top 4 next year with that team.

Great. A synopsis please.

WAR as the article says is Wins Above Replacement. It’s a Baseball statistic. In AFL terms, think of any of *’s top up players from the 2016 season and how they replaced the more experienced players in the team. In 2017, Dyson Heppell kicked 12 goals and averaged 26 disposals a game, so he would have been significantly better than the top up player that replaced him during the 2016 season in his position.

In a Baseball season consisting of 162 games, a player who has 1 WAR has had an average season. When you start getting to 6-10 WAR, it is getting to elite level. Apparently 1 WAR is worth $8 million of value. So if you get near 6-8 WAR every year, then your contract should be stupidly expensive. Mike Trout who has averaged 9.1 WAR every year during his career signed a contract worth 12 years, $425M and Baseball fans still think he was underpaid.

WAR is actually a pretty big deal. If these calculations have Petracca as 2.4 WAR in a 17 game year, then he has been elite.

But they are comparing players to a rookie list player who plays the same position? I'm not sure how they do that when we have up to 40 players on a senior list before rookies are taken into account, and considering the multiple roles players perform these days.

I guess that is why you don’t try to bring an American sport metric into an Australian sport. It just doesn’t work the same way.

It would almost make sense to a team contending. They would want and need a replacement that could match that output immediately. Completely irrelevant in Essendons position, as they are in need of a complete rebuild. Unless they think they’re still in a position to contend?
