Apparently wants out, what are you giving up? He'd be worth around pick 13-18 I reckon but GWS probably want a player.

He is contracted.

He'd compliment our list perfectly but I assume his going rate is higher than our first rounder.

As a fan I would be happier if the club kept these guys in NEAFL if they get the sooks rather than accumulate draft picks for guys that will take years to develop and then might do the same thing.

GWS needs to make a stand and announce that required players will not be going anywhere. If contracted guys who are not required want to move and it is mutual fine but otherwise they need to stay put.

All fair enough but if I was a player manager dealing with this hard line but understandable attitude, I'd be cautioning players against signing long term deals with GWS.

Hard to plan a list in that sort of environment.

Most of the guys have been signing 2 year deals. Once we have real success I think it will be easier to keep guys and we are trying to bring in as many NSW/ACT players as we can but understandably we are trying to focus on the elite talent from that region.

This has been harder with all the resistance from the likes of Mcguire and Newbold but we are doing our best.

The AFL wants 2 teams in Sydney and wants a presence in the West. The clubs are happy for us to be there so long as we don't get too strong and can have a list that is easy to pillage once the players are developed.

If we keep losing players and exclusivity of the Riverina than we probably do become a feeder team and will probably have no longevity in the competition.

There were offers last year yet he re-signed, must hate it bad.

I don't think he hates it bad, I just think he is very open to moving especially when he is likely to get much more game time and money elsewhere. I'm not sure he goes but it's something that will be discussed at length during trade period with GWS and other clubs.

All reasonable enough from your perspective I guess :thumbsu:

Of course from our perspective we lost two gun captains for less than their worth. And had the misfortune to bottom out while GWS scooped up nearly every KPF. We then had to pay through the nose in salary and trade wise to GWS in order to get one of these KPFs. We then have to hear cracks about the lost dogs home from afl hired in flunkies at GWS.

So what if Carlton offer P1 (Weitering) for a bunch of your players. How much would you give up?

I agree, And I hope GWS make a stand. The competition is being run by the AFLPA and player managers. A club can't trade a player to the highest bidder without the player's consent, but the player can nominate whichever club he likes, even when contracted. Free Agency was brought in to allow players to move clubs, bit now it's a case of open slather.

Contracted GWS player, so no doubt he's worth a player of Ryan Griffen's calibre (even though he's cooked) and two first rounders.

As much as I would love Weitering, and I really do, I think the message it would send would be so negative and would disrupt a lot of the good work we have achieved.

We have a very unique culture which is almost like a USA College club where all the lads are similar age and have mostly bought into a foreign area which has actually galvanised the group.

Our wage structure is fairly unique in that there is not as much difference between many of the players. Yes our older guys like Shaw, Scully, Ward, Mummy are on sunstantial coin but a lot of our others apart from Jezza are not and all with the exception of Treloar stayed for less.

I just think with the reaction we got from the players in wanting to achieve something as a group that we would be foolish to let contracted and required guys go under any circumstance.

As much as I have had heated banter with Western Bulldogs fans at times I do have absolute empathy about the fact you lost your Captain at perhaps your most vulnerable time.

Yes we did monopolise the drafts and accumulate a number of top junior talents but that was the only way the AFL could get our team up and running. Obviously the clubs who were at the bottom of the ladder at that time did suffer immensely and this has created some resentment but over time I believe every club will benefit from a strong Western Sydney outfit.

The person from the Giants that came up with the "Lost Dogs Home" Tweet should have been instantly terminated. It may have seemed amusing but in hindsight it showed arrogance and was a complete misread of the AFL landscape. All that smarmy tweet did was create angst and resentment towards our club.

Again fair enough but applying this strategy rigidly means you run the risk of player unhappiness breeding team disharmony. The final manifestation of this may be players signing very short term contracts and threatening to leave via the PSD. Sure you get trades done with higher placed teams but Carlton will be down the bottom for a while as may Essendon, making the PSD threat quite real.

Personally think Weitering could be the missing piece in your premiership puzzle, I'd be surprised that GWS wouldn't look at a deal like the Jaksch deal with the Blues which appears to have favoured GWS if it was offered.

Unsure what Tomlinson would really be worth. He's still got most of his value tied up in versatility and potential unlike McCarthy who really delivered this year. It could be anywhere from a late first rounder up, but I doubt GWS would let him walk for anything on the lower end of that range.
