Adding Depth - Trade Possibilities

The Age today states that Darren Jolly is possible available. Also John Meesen from Adelaide may be available. Suddenly the options look more widespread.

Sydney gave up a first rounder for Jolly just three years ago, so I'm pretty sure that is what the Swannies will demand for him, especially considering they need to rebuild soon. Wood and Meesen could come cheaper, or even through the national draft a la Cain Ackland, or the Pre-Season draft a la Matthew Clarke. However, it is unlikely that a quality young ruckman would get through to our pick (#8) in the pre-season draft, with Carlton and Richmond both super-keen on ruckmen.

Punter (btw, what's with two Punter's flying around this site?...) et cetera, explain to me again why we need another ruck as the first priority? (I'm a little slow...) Don't we have Van Rheenan and Brooks and Gardiner and Kosi? Isn't that enough for us to just go for a 2nd-rounder or equivalent trade? Isn't it more important to get a quick midfielder? Shouldn't that be our 1st-round pick?

We need a decent ruckman because:

We're not sure if Gardiner will stand up next season (I hope he will)
Kosi may well be the new FF (and is only OK as a ruckman)
Van Rheenan is most likely to be rookied again (big kid ... some potential there)
Blake should not ever play as a ruck (self explanatory)
Brooks may well be delisted, and is not rated as a ruck anyway
We continually get pounded in the ruck by better equipped teams (Cox, Jolly, Sandilands et al)

If Jolly is available I'd give Sydney pick 9 for him. Instant ruck fix to at least decent level, and if Gardiner plays well we at last have a strong ruck combination freeing Kosi up to play as a floating forward.

It's a win all around.

if we get jolly for pick 9 that would be a disaster

Well, in real life I look like him. Cannot speak for "Punter" but always remember that I am "The Punter".

Wood is significantly younger than Rix, and therefore has room for improvement.

Personally I would be satisfied with a ruck duo of Gardiner/Koschitzke with the other one resting forward. Rremember, West Coast rarely take either Cox or Seaby off, they rest them forward. That may overcome the loss of Gehrig, as I believe Watts will get the opportunity to prove himself next season.

On another thread Travis Johnstone's name is being bandied around. No thanks - this guy wins less hard ball than our own much loved Aaron Fiora. And on top of that he get injured all the time.

especially if this Alex Rance kid is as good as people (big footy users on draft/trade thread) say he is.

Please not another half-baked ruckman that i know Jolly will be if he comes to St.kilda. He is too similar to Gardiner and Blake. Let the other clubs fight over him, i dont want him at saints.

Milne kicked over 30 goals this year as an occassional crumber who started to play further up the ground. That's pretty darn good. He was also really beginning to make some lovely, deft passes to the other forwards by the last few games. He's ridden his storm, and I think will be a good player for us over the next few years. To get rid of him now would be a waste of all the crap we've gone through with him these last few years.

I understand the need for a ruckman but surely we wouldn't give away #9 for a modestly talented ruckman like Darren Jolly. I rate Charman higher than Jolly but again wouldn't be prepared to part with a top ten draft pick, even in this draft.

Especially in this draft. A weak draft is when you need high picks most, because the quality falls away quickly from the top picks

I think everyones thinking we have to make som trades! I think we should keep all the picks we got and trade players for picks.. Kosi/gardiner like someone else said would be a good ruck combnation (one dropping forward) . use watts as a full forward and definitely if still available pick up rance with our number 9! Super fast and athletic defender, uses the ball extremely well.

Goose will bulk up during the pre season and i would use him as our full back.

I dont think we need many more KPP

Down the guts :

watts
Riewoldt
kosi/gardiner (rucks)
Fisher/Rance
Hudghton/Maguire

Everyone has their own opinions but i thnik we should concentrate on a few speedy players (in exception of rance with our first pick)

Yeah I agree that is a fairly strong line up of talls if they are all fit. I don't like Goose at full back tho, he is much more suited to CHB but Max is still a very good full back and has a couple of years left so hopefully we can pick up Rance and then he'll have time to develop. Also we picked up Allen last year, hopefully he will also turn into a player.

I don't think trading is the right way to go, we have a good group we just need to stay fit and have a good run with injuries. Draft well and hope players like Armitage, Geary, Eddy & Howard can step up and provide us with some run through the midfield.

I'd trade Milne for one reason.

He never performs well in big games.

30 goals a year is great but playing one man short in a final or crucial home & away game is not acceptable.

Depends on what the offer is but in a weaker draft I wouldn't be accepting anything lower than a 2nd round pick.

I think we have tried trading him twice, no bites. Watts probably has more currency

would you take david hille and andrew welsh for leigh fisher and your 2nd pick

I would, but I doubt Essendon would do that deal. IMO LF ~= AW, and DH for a second round pick is a pretty good deal. But your new coach (whenever he's appointed) would surely not do that deal? It's not like you (like us) have ruckmen aplenty ...

I would seriously want Jolly at the Saints. He and Gardiner would be a great ruck combination and would give our midfield a really good look. I want Kosi to play permanently out of the square. He is currently one of the best contested marks in the league and I think he could easily kick 70+ goals next year, he's a great converter. I would package both X and R Clarke. I think we'd be happy to get say 20 Sherrin footballs from another club for them!!! I used to think Fiora was the softest player but he has really come on this year and R Clarke has regressed. Much like X Clarke and J Gwilt. Jimmy Gwilt looks a shadow of the man who performed brilliantly at the back end of 2005. I really think Matt Ferguson could develop into a solid player, so I reckon we could palm of Jimmy Gwilt to the Roos or Dogs for a 3rd round pick.

Xavier Clarke won't be traded, as i thought he signed a three year contract. Besides, clubs would only offer a third round pick, so we might as well try and get xavier injury free and contributing.

His brother had a poor season this year. Once again, what will clubs offer? Not very much. Gwilt like wise, i don't think any club would chase a trade after him.
