What about Michael and James Wundke? I think they would be good home grown prospects with late picks. Maybe even a rookie spot?

The latest buzz seems to be Nick Salter. It seems to be a given that we will pick him up but I am a little perplexed as to why. Usually when I see someones prediction for the draft and they mention Salter, there is a big void next to his name explaining why. His best game was round 14 in the local league where he kicked 5 goals against a very tired performance from Westies. He played maybe a dozen or so games in 2007, not including finals. He is a 189 cm 90kg forward . Do we really need another one of those. I think if we were to draft him he would find it hard to make it into the team.

Dont get me wrong I think Salter is a good footy player but I never would have picked him ending up on a AFL list. Maybe someone who has seen him play a little more footy than I, can inform me as to why he would be a good pick up.

Did you get your info from The Advertiser? He kicked 4 goals and was listed 3rd best for the Eagles in the Prelim. He kicked 5 against West & Norwood & 6 goals plus best on ground against Central and South, all in the last few months of the season.

He would be a good pick up because he has a presence about him and can do things on the field other footballers can't. Great kick, strong mark, big leap, good when it hits the ground. Only question marks would be his injuries (has had a few already in the last couple of years) and how much he really wants to be a professional footballer (he apparently was going to quit league footy after that R14 game). Hentschel/Salter/Gill/Burton would form a strong combo up forward in the latter half of next season.

Fraser has nominated for the ND and he has apparently said he will only go to St. Kilda.

Am I the only one that would want a genuine midfielder with pick 10?! For some reason Myers doesn't intruige me much! He is a HBF who could play on the wing but can he really become a TRUE midfielder?! Not convinced!

I would prefer if we got Ebert. I doubt Masten would slide to 10 and there are strong rumours suggesting he has a promise from the Eagles if Richmond takes Cotchin. Even if the talk of promise is bogus, I can't see Fremantle passing on a local midfielder like Masten.

The way I see it, there are 3 obstacles between us and Ebert, Melbourne, Essendon and Brisbane. It would be a minor miracle if he slides to 10 but miracles do happen :)

of course the promise is bogus, there is no reason to give one.

in the NBA a promise is given in exchange for shutting down workouts, but here? no benefit = no promise

Pick 10: Brad Ebert. I genuinely think he will slide. At least another key forward will surprise and be pushed up into the top 10 based on upside, and one of the midfielders with question marks (Ebert, Myers, Masten) will slide to us.

Pick 27: Jack Grimes

Pick 30: Best remaining small forward. Perhaps Maric, though doubtful - maybe a Motlop or a Jacky.

Pick 38: Kepler Bradley.

Pick 57: I don't want to say Nick Salter, because I know nothing about him and EVERYBODY is saying him. But I would recycle someone here. A 20 year-old SANFL or VFL player, who is hungry. Or perhaps some speculative height, like a Mulligan.

Pick 71: Taylor Walker

Pick 75: PSD.

What I would love to see happen (however unlikely) :

National Draft:
10: Brad Ebert (Med Mid/Fwd)
27: Addam Maric (Small Fwd)
30: Levi Greenwood (Med Def/Mid)
38: Mitch Farmer (Med Mid)
58: James Wundke (Ruck)
71: Nick Salter (Tall Fwd)
75: Taylor Walker (Tall Fwd)

Rookie Draft:
Jared Petrenko
Peter Rolfe
Trevor Oliver
Nathan Grima

As unrealistic as that may be, I wouldn't get to enjoy it anyway as I would probably die a hasty death-by-enthusiasm if that was our draft result! :eeek:

What I think we might actually see

National Draft:
10: Cyril Rioli (Small Fwd/Mid) / David Myers (Tall Def/Mid)
27: Levi Greenwood (Medium Def/Mid) / Aaron Joseph (Med Mid)
30: Andy Otten (Tall Fwd-Utility) / Brendan Whitecross (Med Def/Mid)
38: Mitch Farmer (Medium Mid) / Tom McNamara (Tall Def)
58: Tom Rockliff (Med Fwd) / Jared Patrenko (Small Mid/Fwd)
71: Nick Salter (Tall Fwd) / Todd Grima (Tall Fwd)
75: Taylor Walker (Tall Fwd)

Rookie Draft:
Lachlan Button (Ruck) / Stefan Martin (Ruck/Utility)
Austin Wonaeamirri (Small Mid/Fwd) / Kristin Thompson (Small Mid)
Scott Blesling (Med Def/Mid) / Charlie McAdam (Small Mid)
Peter Rolfe (Med Mid/Fwd) / Sam Fairclough (Med Mid)

At our first pick we will have plenty of quality on the table with a very hard decision to be made. If we look for a running type which I firmly believe we will, we'll likely have a choice of Myers, Rioli, Grimes, Ward, Vezpremi and Collier - with Grimes, Rioli and Collier probably the most "ready to go" options. Going by what I've been told, I think we are a very good chance to take Rioli at pick 10 but would be extremely happy if we took any of the players I just mentioned with pick 10. I would be ecstatic if we got Ebert but I just can't see him sliding that far, here's hoping for a miracle!

Our 2nd Round picks 27 and 30 are probably the hardest to try and successfully predict, as there are so many different scenarios that could play out in that period of this particular draft that no-one can realistically be certain of who will be there at those picks, so I went with who I thought was most likely to still be available at those picks and then narrowed it down to the players I believed we would take. Greenwood may not last to 27 but I'm keeping the faith, otherwise Joseph would be a terrific selection at 27 and would go a long way to fixing our perceived lack of pure grunt, strength and pace in the midfield. Otten would be great value at 30, as would Whitecross, Normington, Dangerfield or Browne - but I think we are in desperate need of an Otten type Utility who can be dangerous at both ends of the ground while also being able to create mismatches in the middle. We would have already covered our out-and-out midfielder needs with picks 10 and 27 so Otten is best-choice for needs and best-choice at this pick :thumbsu:

Pick 38 is just as hard to pick as this is where the real quality starts to dry up a bit. We have a habit of using picks in this range on local talent but with the number of picks we have available before this I think we may look externally, especially given we now have a much greater recruiting presence in Victoria. I went with Farmer for his flexibility, fine skills and leadership qualities and the fact we were looking at him last year makes him an easier choice for me. Otherwise McNamara is the safest local option at this stage in the draft.

Pick 58 is one we may certainly look locally for, with Petrenko the most likely candidate of the SA lads, but I did like the look of Rockliff, he's got great footy-smarts and knows exactly where the goals are. We are in desperate need of a specialist Forward his size and if we haven't taken Motlop with one of our earlier picks, I believe he is the best option in that regard that I see being available this late.

I have a very strong suspicion there will be some bi-play between Port and the Crows for Salter and Grima between their 4th and 5th round selections, I strongly believe Port will want to take Grima and do so with their last available pick, but if Adelaide nab him with their pick a few selections earlier Port will most certainly take Salter with theirs. Having said that, I believe both teams will get what they want with Salter going to Adelaide and Grima to Port in the 4th/5th Round.

I believe we will either use our late pick on a developing ruckmen if there is still one on our wanted list available otherwise we will wait and see what is available in the Rookie Draft. Would have loved to see us pick up Dean Putt or James Wundke late, but I believe they will be taken much earlier in the 35-50 range (3rd Rd). Wundke most likely by Port with pick 33 or 49 if they go for Motlop with their first 2nd Rd pick 28.

The final pick is worth a mention, Taylor Walker is the name... Get used to it, you'll be hearing it plenty over the next 10 years ;)

I have gone mostly local with the Rookies, as that is our safest and most likely option. I've thrown in the best local talent likely to be on offer and I wouldn't be surprised if a player I didn't mention gets another shot at AFL as a mature age (24yr old) recruit in Central's Ian Callinan. A ready-made Crumber who could take over from Bode's role if upgraded early on but hey I could be way off! :D

With Welsh leaving that means we will have another pick after 75, doesn't it?

If so, what number it will be? I have not seen a released updated draft order.

you are on the right track with your thinking Nikki, but we actually now have picks 71 (5th Round) and pick 75 (6th Round) - the last live pick in the draft as other teams have only enough picks available to last the first 4 or so rounds, so the extra pick we made available actually becomes our last pick, 75, while our original final pick now becomes pick 71.

The field shortens so to speak ;)

Rookie Draft:
Lachlan Button (Ruck) / Stefan Martin (Ruck/Utility)
Austin Wonaeamirri (Small Mid/Fwd) / Kristin Thompson (Small Mid)
Scott Blesling (Med Def/Mid) / Charlie McAdam (Small Mid)
Peter Rolfe (Med Mid/Fwd) / Sam Fairclough (Med Mid)

Good to see someone who is keen on Austin Wonaeamirri - im a big fan of him and would love to see him get a rookie spot.

Just on Ebert, reading about him it sounds a lot like how Gibbs was described approaching the previous draft; no standout feature, just a good all-round footballer. Anyone else see a bit of risk factor there?

Well imo there is a risk of that type never developing into an outstanding player, because they don't have that real genuine weapon to their game.

He's been likened a bit to Voss which would be why Brisbane are interested in him and why Voss rates him very highly (Voss works with the AIS part time I think).
