Adelaide Crows name unknown coach for 2016 season

After what was arguably the hardest season possible (in terms of emotional heartache) for the Adelaide Crows with the sudden death of senior coach Phil Walsh, the Adelaide Crows have today named unknown prodigy Hayden Sumner as their new senior coach in 2016

Sumner comes from a senior football and coaching career in the VFL and TAC cup with the Bendigo Pioneers and Bendigo Gold football clubs. Sumner's presentation for the Crows job was highly regarded by CEO Andrew Fagan who has been quoted by "Getting the right people in the right seats".

"After what was a difficult season off field for the club in 2015, the players really showed that the group is sticking together and working towards elite standards and success here at the club by making 2 finals and winning one last year", CEO Andrew Fagan said at the interview after naming Sumner as coach.

"This group has something special about them. I am in a difficult position as the group played in 2 finals last year so we all know that they're doing a lot of things right, so it's not like I am taking over a club who has finished on the bottom of the ladder.
The incident is still pretty raw in the players mind and I'm sure it'll be difficult for some players leading into the new season and we (as a club) will keep the fundamentals that Walsh put in place for the lads last year however I will need to tweak some things to keep the group improving as the competition changes in the not so distant future as well" Sumner mentioned in his presser.

Coach's Member fortnightly Report

With 2 games down to start the year we're sitting at 1-1 with some what I've thought stand out performances.

A good 13 point win in round 1 against the Saints really saw Jarryd Lyons step up in the absence of a midfield position left by Patrick Dangerfield and with some of the older guys spending a bit more time out of the midfield, it was pleasing to see Lyons get a full run without the sub rule in place. It was pleasing too see the emergence of Matt Crouch who this season looks leaner and meaner. We all know he is a ball magnet and he has worked hard on his disposal efficiency over the summer and we saw some of that against the Saints in round 1.

Our forward display was on show again at Adelaide oval with Tex, Charlie and Jenkins all getting among the goals, while Tex was putting on a show further up the ground as well.

The second game we came up against the Cats who with the recruitment of some big names over the summer fielded a different looking side. We went down to the Cats by just the 2 points in the end yet I was very proud of the boys to keep fighting right at the end of the game.
Again our captain stood up on the day with a bag of 6 goals to take his tally to 10 to start the year off while Matt Crouch found plenty of ball through the midfield.

The only exception to what was a good day for the football club (and apart from the loss) was the loss of defender Luke Brown who will miss the next 5 weeks with an AC problem. It's a big loss for the club yet it will give some of the other guys a chance to cement their spot in the side.

Guys like Dean Gore and Cameron Ellis-Yolmen who have been in great form in the SANFL will get the opportunity at senior level. Gore has really impressed in his 2 SANFL games with 28 possessions and 36 possessions in his first 2 weeks. He has put in a really good summer after being involved in the Dangerfield trade so we're keen to see what he has to offer at senior level.
Young forward Jonathon Beech who was a mature rookie recruit for the club is tracking well, he's been in very good form with 3 and 6 goals in the first two weeks. If he can continue his workload and keeps performing on field he'll get a chance sometime this year however our forward half has been functionally quiet well at the moment with Tex, Eddie, Charlie, Lynchy and Menzel up there.

Another very pleasing sight for our Crows members with the return of Brad Crouch after a years stint on the injury list. Brad has come back into the side full of energy and really hasn't missed a beat. He started off in the center square against the Saints in round 1 and finished with 29 disposals, 6 tackles and 7 clearances, while finished with 22 touches and 7 inside 50's against the Cats last weekend. He has been sorely missed, but does still have a lot of work to do to get to full fitness.
