Geez, just noticed that with Talia and Lynch departing, our only 150+ games players are Sloane, Walker, Smith, Laird and Brown.

Seeds has 132, Crouch 125 and Kelly 110. Milera next on 62.

Only 3 players between Brown (178) and Milera.
And the rumours are Kelly and crouch going and tex who knows. Potentially only 5 players over 62 games. We all wanted us to play youth , there might not be much of a choice next year haha

Crouch has a contract in front of him for 2 years with a triggers for a 3rd it's been reported and it's been mentioned by Kelly and in the press a couple of times recently that contract talks are progressing well? Seems both are wanted but negotiations are ongoing re contract terms and $$'s

Interesting all this talk of Crouch only being an inside mid and not having any value in today's game, yet talk of how bad our list management is with the very similar Jarrod Lyons touted as a top 5 player in the competition.

Hopper
Lyons
Crouch
Mitchell
Cunnington

All amazing mids who are so influential to their team's success.

It's not 'inside ball winners' who aren't in vogue, it's a specific style of them - low hurt accumulators. Clubs still want the aggressive, imposing, physical bulls. Cunnington and Hopper are exactly that. They see the hard ball, they crack in, beat every other bloke to it like their life depended on it, and quickly release the play forward. Crouch isn't really like that. Mitchell and Lyons sit somewhere inbetween those two extremes of inside mids. Blokes like Crouch, Sheed, Fiorini & Dunstan are the ones who are out of fashion. Even WCE supporters are seeing the light on Sheed now - whose drop off associated with these new rules has been very steep.

And to be honest, Keays does nearly everything peak Crouch did anyway - bad things and all. But he's a bloody hard worker on defence which is a huge point of difference.

It's why controversially I prefer Wines of 2016-20 to Wines of 2021. The only difference between the two is the Wines of 2021 is finding a lot more outside ball as that receiver instead of just being a hard nosed ball winner. In that ball winning role he was excellent - like a Cunnington or a Hopper. But these extra stats are just cheap, ineffectual outside/lateral play from a bloke who doesn't have the footskills to hurt. All he's doing is denying a bloke like Butters/Amon/Boak who do the chance to actually damage.

So the Valente thing has legs, he's certainly coming home but I'm not sure he'd find his way to us.

If Mcpherson is our attacking HBF then we are in a lot of trouble. His chance to play in the side is as a lockdown defender IMO. He hasn't been great at that this year either, hopefully more of what we saw in 2020 from him next year.

Not sure he is quick enough for that role.

So can someone explain to me why we wouldn’t be an immediately better side by keeping Mrouch and playing him in the guts and making Sloane a permanent half forward.

I know everyone likes to carry on like pork chops but Sloane is one of the only players we have who seems to be a natural fit on the HFF.

Sloane's not part of our longer term future (3-10yrs) and Matty could well net us a pick in the low 20s (though if he ends up staying, that wouldn't be a terrible outcome either).

Also immediately better side is not as important as better side in a year or so's time, IMO - we're not quite out of the rebuild stage yet.

Here's a few trade questions.

Strachan seems to be popping up as an option on other boards. Would you trade him to someone like the Western Bulldogs, and grab another lower league ruck in the rookie draft for backup? Maybe Strachan, pick 24 and 37 for pick 16?

Doesn't really value Strachan from a points perspective, but gets the upgrade across the line.

What about something like Pick 4 and 37 for Dawson, Stephens and pick 12? Get two useful pieces and still get someone like Mattie Roberts.

What about Rankine and 19 for our 2022 First?

You'd have to think about the Sydney trade.
If that happened rather trade 12 for Rankine and 19.

I’m really on the fence about what we do with Matt Crouch.

On one hand I think with the emergence of Keats and Laird being the established 100+ gamer in there I feel like we need to be getting Schoenberg, Pedlar, McHenry, Hately etc in there as much as possible and adding in another accumulator, albeit a very good one in Crouch is just going to clog it up. If we could get a late first round/ early second round pick for him, or maybe two second rounds and target areas of need in the draft that’d be ideal.

On the other hand I think we’ve forgotten just how good he is as an inside distributor and at 26 he could well be an integral part of our next premiership tilt and Nicks should be looking for a way to integrate him into the midfield without taking minutes off those younger guys. I could see a team structure where Crouch could be dishing it off to the likes of Schoenberg, Cook, McHenry and Sholl that would be really beneficial for the team and those guys.
The trouble is he is very limited outside the midfield.

He's 100% midfield time or zero.

Start playing Laird, Crouch and Keays (on top of Sloane) and it becomes very difficult to see our coaches giving minutes to the next gen

I would definitely be moving Sloane to a HFF to free up midfield minutes for our young midfielders.

But I would be letting Crouch go for the same reason (plus the FA compo).

Unless we are mad we are drafting another young mid this year. Need to free up plenty of room for them.

Ideally I would like at least one of our young midfielders at every center bounce and stoppage.

I think you’d listen to offers for Strachan. Not letting him go cheaply, but if he’s presenting significant value you’d have to consider.

WRT Stephens/Dawson, I can’t see us trading for both. I think if you’re bringing in Dawson, you probably have little interest in Stephens. Likely to play a similar role, would rather try to leverage our high PSD position and capacity to offer a large salary in the next 2-3 years, to get a discount in the trade for Dawson than try and also include Stephens.

Stephens for mine will be difficult, Swans will probably want a first rounder given he is only 2 years out from being a pick 5, yet hasn’t proven anything at AFL level, so we’d be more likely looking to invest a 2nd rounder. If the Swans were willing to let him go for less, I’d be worrying “why” they Swans would be doing that.

With Stephens - I think they're doing that because he's uncontracted, he sits outside their best 22 and they can't afford to pay him.

If he goes into the PSD, is there a chance Collingwood nab him with pick 2? Or will their salary cap issues prevent them from offering enough $$$?

Collingwood and Gold Coast are apparently a bit tight on cash.

North could be a threat though. They should have millions upon millions free

Collingwood are interested apparently from posters on the main board so they very well could cut our lunch if we went that way
