Why the firesale when its not needed - surely there are heads there smart enough to set a compensation benchmark contract that if not reached, we keep him. And if that figure was 4 years at $550K for example, how the hell is bad considering Matt is still mid 20's. If that figure is reported to be true and for 2 years, they are likely paying Frampton more...frightening stuff

A lowball offer indicates the club has no interest whatsoever in keeping a player and is more just making sure they have a job in case the league is also not interested in them. If we offer a lowball contract to Crouch, that tells you our intentions from the get-go (much like any player).

It is worth noting we should be shit-scared of committing long term to any senior players who aren't in that A-grade category. Even more so if we choose to retain someone who lacks a point of difference in our side.

Valuable observation.
I haven't seen Strachan at all other than his two games late this year. Given the quality of his opponents, (gawn and goldy) my fresh eyes saw a novice ruckman who displayed he was at a competitive equal rucking level. I thought he did incredibly well and IMO, provided greater breadth to our midfield skillset by being an effective midfielder once the rucking dual was done. No offence intended to ROB, but I can't recall one instance this year when he added to our midfield once the ruck dual is done. More often than not, he simply gets in the way.
I'm not wanting to start a witch hunt for ROB by any means. However, I am certain Strachan is being closely considered for a greater role than he has currently been used for.

ROB is above average for rucks in clearances, tackles, ground ball gets and contested possessions. The other thing that is neglected is ROB’s intercept marking which is rated as elite for rucks.

I think ROB is undervalued as a “midfielder” because what he does looks ugly, but the numbers show he’s effective.

By contrast, Strachan didn’t really show to be a great contested mark. This to me is a big weakness for Strachan in the debate, as I think at the moment you need your ruck to be a good intercept mark, we see how Gawn can often control a game by essentially making an area of the ground inaccessible for the opposition.

I think there’s a lot of recency bias with Strachan, I think he showed plenty but if we have to pick now, unless the price is really good for ROB I’m still going with ROB. Ideally we keep both but I don’t like our chances that someone won’t come for Strachan, St Kilda, Geelong or Bulldogs being the obvious ones that would definitely be interested I think.

Tom Morris' report includes the following; "I think he’s probably insulted...." hardly conclusive is it?
What he is really saying is:
"I think" - I don't know anything, I'm making it up.
"probably" - he might be, he might not. I clearly know nothing, so I will sit on the fence here.

If I remember correctly, I think the club at the start of the year offered Brad a contract on good money but for 2 years and then the offer was put on hold/retracted. Tin-foil hat thinking might be so we can see what he's offered if he exercises FA rights at the end of the year and either match or take the compo pick.

Fast forward to end of season and the Stengle linked indiscretions happened - I don't think we ended up making any contract offer to him.

If we’re offering Crouch $350k, there must be some big offers pending incoming players. There is no way we’re anywhere near the minimum cap with Crouch on his current $. We’ve already cleared cap space with the others exiting.
