Having not heard of the bloke up until a couple of weeks ago, is there any chance he could play midfield?

I too think we seem to be getting too many HBF type players, surely we're looking at playing Dawson elsewhere?

He is a mid and half forward. Longmire just plays him in defence as he likes having our best kickers kicking it out of the defensive 50.

Also please stay away from him.

In Regards to Dawson I found out today from a very reliable source that we are definitely keen and have been doing our best to convince him to come home, apparently he has been missing SA and he has quiet a few good mates in Adelaide but there has been a spanner thrown in the works in regards to how much the Swans have progressed this year.

Patrick Lipinski dropped again. Hunter preferred.

Given it's well known Hamish was keen in his draft year but that sly old dog Simon Dalrymple nabbed him earlier than was expected...I hope we are monitoring him closely because with his skill set he should be playing AFL every week and would incrementally improve our midfield rotations as a mid very capable up forward.

I'm a massive Lipinski fan - or at least, was. But I'm not surprised he's out of the team. His playstyle really doesn't mesh with how the Dogs play - manic pressure from the small flankers/wings - who need to be quick, aggressive, competitive and selfless. Lipinski doesn't run hard or fast enough and is a dreadful tackler.

It's not Hunter playing ahead of him that's the indictment on where he's at, it's Roarke Smith - who's one of the most limited battlers going around getting a game on the wing ahead of him, despite being a lockdown back pocket his whole career. Because Smith has all of the above 'non skill based' traits.

If we go for Lipinski - we shouldn't kid ourselves about what we're signing up for - a beautiful decision maker and kick who won't offer a huge amount else - low defensive work rate, slow. He's limited - but in a way that most teams find a use for. I reckon he's the type who looks good when you're not watching every game intently, but the moment he's on your team you just notice those deficiencies so clearly.

Dawson is a good player but I don't quite understand why we are targeting another half back.

We just put Jones there, we have Milera and Hinge injured, McPherson is out of the team, Worrell can't get a game and on top of that we also have 4 KPDs outside the team.

Do we actually need another defender?

Milera doesn't have a defensive bone in his body and should be playing mid-forward with no guarantees he'll ever be able to reach his projected heights given he couldn't even hit them before the injury, Jones as a halfback should just be about finding touch to move into the midfield as he was drafted to do, McPherson is at most a bog standard back pocket replacement for Brown if he ever finds form again, and Hinge is a speculative rookie resuce who has played 5 minutes for us in total. Even if the untried Worrell eventually gets a chance and proves himself, he can't do it all alone.

We want for just about every area of the ground, saving our top picks for the class mids we have precisely 0 of and pulling areas like halfback through trade skullduggery is a reasonable course of action, be it Dawson, Lukosius, or anyone else worth the effort.

all I read was "beautiful decision maker and kick". Sign him up.

Honestly brilliant post, really nailed Lipinski with the last paragraph. When things are going well you're in disbelief that he's not getting games more regularly. When you're on the back foot and teams are starting to run over you, you actually start to wonder if Lipinski is even playing that day.

Lost count of how many times I've seen him lazily stick out an arm at a player running past him with the ball, instead of actually committing to a tackle. He's great moving through traffic offensively, and has superb delivery inside 50, but doesn't have a defensive bone in his body, which is a problem in our system.

Do we need Dawson?? Even if he is from SA and is a decent player. We need mids desperately and not half backs. Also his age at 24 is not really great for us either and especially if he comes on big money. We should be looking to draft midfielders and forward player. Look to fringe players like Sparrow from Melbourne who aren’t getting many games.

What? It's perfect for us. Our middle-aged best 22 talent is kinda bleak right now, once the likes of Laird/Sloane/Smith/Seedsman start to fall off a cliff we'll be calling out for players in his range to be cool-headed experienced leaders. I agree that we need midfielders, but don't act like Dawson wouldn't improve us, particularly once Smith decreases his output

Re: Sparrow - I'm seeing a lot of the same people that say we should be chasing Stephens and Sparrow (both of whom I like, FWIW) as who are, at the same time, writing off Hately (all of whom are basically the same age). Just something I've noticed

Here's Skippos' comments from 2015 about Dawson

Kid from Sturt Jordan Dawson looks good. Taken a couple of really nice grabs on debut today. Half back flank type, left foot kick. Looks like decent skills.

From Robe. Missed most of the U18's I think due to injury.
No. Missed due to incompetent selection. Had him top 20 before the champs. Was concussed in round one of the champs, they gave him two matches off to recover, recalled him for the fourth game which we lost convincingly and played him 47% game time exclusively out of the square. Them dropped him for the last two games. Was disgusting, the kid's a gun.

Interesting that he's playimg off half back in the league side. At ressies level he was playing a second/third forward type role and absolutely dominating. Numerous bags, plenty of 7-8 shot games. More behinds than goals the only concern. Hadn't been playing back at all so to be promoted to play at the other end is strange. But good to see he's got another string to his bow.

Don’t think Dawson will make a huge difference to us but we have Hamill and Jones there right now. We need for all the players to mature together. If he’s free then I’m all for it but I don’t want to give up anything for him.
As for Hately, he look average and won’t ever become a star. He need to improve big time just to get a spot in our side who are lacking any midfield quality. He is slow with average disposal. I’m not writing him off but he has some way before he becomes a regular

Agreed. Himmelberg has the height/reach/athleticism to play as a KPD taking the big boys, and probably not the brains/stability through the contest to create the play as a forward. Would be better off using his 'gifts' in defence, letting a forward take him to the ball and be the one initiating the physicality not receiving it.

IMO nearly any 'goodish' key forward should be tried as a defender before being delisted.

Adding my second agree. Can’t understand why the berg can’t play as a key defender for a handful of games. Seems to be athletic enough to go with any key forward, doesn’t need to mark it as often/present to a kicker and is good below his knees for such a tall guy. When you look at his junior highlights it’s odd we haven’t at least trialed him down back.
