Any thoughts what McAsey might be worth? Obviously depends who wants him and what they’ve got to play with - but any thoughts?
Hopefully a 2 year extension...

As expected, the public pressure has been approved to be applied regarding Tex playing on. Shocked to be sitting here. Definitely need to get it sorted now, just in case the body packs up in a month or so as the season wears on. How about keep your trap shut and as a 31 year old, wait to see how the body is in the last third of the season rather than applying public pressure to get a deal done ASAP. Typical of our senior players, me first.

In-form Adelaide Crows forward Taylor Walker is out of contract at season’s end but wants to play on in 2022

“That’s something we’ll have to talk about soon because I believe I can still play and I want to be part of this footy club next year,” Walker told Channel 7.

It wouldn't surprise me if we lost both Talia and Lynch.

In Talia's case as entrenched as he is in Adelaide someone will offer him more than one year which is all we could do. He might take that.

Listening to Tom Lynch, I suspect he has already informally agreed to terms with another club. I doubt players don't think or talk with clubs about their contracts if they are in their last year. This whole enjoy playing their football and sit down with the club later always seems like a delay tactic. He has shown in the past he is happy to play us off against other clubs for his signiture so I suspect that is all happening at the moment.

Interesting comments from Tom this week when asked about his contract ‘hasn’t thought about it...’ apparently. Now where have we heard that before...? I seem to recall one of Tom’s good mates ramming that comment down our throats a few years back before deserting us at about the worst possible time.

Ultimately I think one of Walker or Lynch need to leave at the end of the year. If Walker keeps his current form up, I think its a no brainer, as his form/style of play will take significant pressure off of Thilthorpe as we seek to get games into him. Lynch takes no pressure off of a developing Key forward. He doesn’t warrant a key defender, but he does take up a Key forward spot due to his lack of defensive pressure.

Tom I reckon would have some value to another club that is entering its window, potentially its an doorway into his obvious coaching aspirations.

Talia’s another interesting case, Butts has done a good job and simply needs to be persisted with. We then have Murray, Worrel, McAsey and Borlase in the SANFL also potentially warranting opportunities. Whilst I think Talia returns to the side this year, I do wonder if another club may come knocking with a 2 year deal and the potential of finals and similarly a pathway to coaching.

I don’t think anyone would begrudge such a move from either.

Yet Nicks mentioned today they are in regular disoxission with Lynch, Tex, Talia, Doedee & Fog about their contracts....

Tom has been coaching the girls and and has enough trouble with injury and form at the moment. So pushing for another contract right now is not high on his agenda. If he was in rare form, he'd be in lock step with Walker applying public pressure on the club.

cant see talia moving TBH.. grounded in adelaide and just had a second child. but also wouldnt begrudge him if he did go for the extra security of a better deal than the crows offered.

lynch can go... dont want him around next year. plays 1 good game in every three IMO.. and his body is always a hinderance.

would be happy to see Walker hang around for one last year next year but as long as its more to help develop the youth..

none of these guys are gonna be there for our next push for a flag so there is a point where they will need to move aside and let those that will take the reigns. that point is fast approaching.

best part about it all is the amount of coin these three lads are currently taking up in our salary cap means we will have a war chest come the end of the season.. even if all three stayed it wont be on anywhere near the same coin they are currently on.. Tex and talia would be easily in our top 3-4 highest paid and lynch wouldn't be too far away from that either..

wouldnt care if Mcrouch took up FA end of season either..

Holy ****, Lynch isn't even a forward, yet alone a key forward

Holy fu**, Lynch isn't even a forward, yet alone a key forward
Spot on. Lynch is a tall wingman these days

Hopefully he doesn't continue having games like last week, because if he does, that's not at all the kind of production you want from a wingman. You want guys like Seed and Sholl, preferably

It will be interesting to see how we get up the draft order. At the end of last season it felt like we were all but guaranteed a top four pick. I expect we will slide as the season goes on but we may have to package something up to get a real decent pick.

The way this draft's shaping with midfield talent anywhere in the top 10 or 12 will get you a pretty decent prospect I'd be pretty sure already, a little bit skinny for talls perhaps but some may emerge as the season gets towards the pointy end.

Which is completely fair enough.

Personally, I think he stays in for a while yet if fit.

But if you're going to drop him, you should do it knowing that he spends 95% of his time running between the 50 metre arcs.

We still have the Mid Season draft and we could choose 3 players for a long look (Stengle, Milera, and Hinge)
It'd be unfair on the kids perhaps only getting six months on the list, but I absolutely hope we sign three to get an extended look and the box seat for signing.

Personally, I hope we re-sign McAsey, and try to get two picks in the top dozen.

Alternatively, I guess we use our second round on the best available tall defender option, and maybe move McAsey for middling assets that we turn into a player (Stephens, say). Somehow get on the offensive instead of defensive with a subsequent trade.

Were not that smart. Pick up 3 potential players, strengthen the SANFL side to help up and coming existing players development, and potentially hope 1 of them may turn out a player of the future. There must be players not drafted last season that went by that show potential. Maybe a key forward incase Tex goes down.

We could, but we won't. At most we will select one, more likely none.

I would respectfully suggest your "more likely none" call might be a bit premature with respect 19 year olds that missed the call in the 2020 draft, already there are 3 or 4 in the NAB League showing enough to suggest they'll likely be in serious consideration and with the VFL kicking off yesterday looking at the selected teams there are at least a half a dozen 19 year olds that showed good talent in 2019 that scouts will be tracking very closely up to the mid season draft.

Recruiters won't pass up the opportunity to grab a player early that meets their requirements rather than run the gauntlet at the season's end National Draft in the hope the player is still available at the pick they rate them at. An early free hit is too good to pass up.

I would think the likelihood we will select a player may be dictated by the Crows win/loss record and therefore ladder position at the time of the mid-season draft. i.e. where we are in the pecking order pick wise to get a crack at the top end talent available.

I understand where you're coming from, I really do. If we were in this same position 12 months ago then I would be in complete agreement with you.

The problem is not a lack of available talent, it's a broader list management issue - a lack of obvious delist/retire/trade candidates at the end of the year. Strachan, Stengle, Mackay & Davis are obvious, but it gets decidedly harder to identify any likely departures beyond that trio, and 3 of the 4 are on the rookie list. Butts is in his 3rd rookie year and needs to be upgraded. The AFL mandates a minimum 3 selections at the ND, and grabbing a player in the mid-season draft would severely limit our options at the end of the year.

Participation in the mid-season draft is optional, the ND is mandatory. We need to consider the ND first, then see if we have the flexibility in our list management to take advantage of the MSD.

You don't have to keep any players drafted in the midseason beyond the end of this year, if you choose not to.

It's an absolute free swing and it would make so little sense at a time were rebuilding to not use it.

You don't have to, but what's the point in drafting a 19yo kid if you don't plan/expect to keep them?

It's one thing to fill a gap by drafting a mature aged player (e.g. GC likely grabbing a mature ruck), which could easily justify a short-term contract only. It's entirely another to uproot a 19yo kid and then dump them 6 months later.

I don't see why you have such a problem with this, it's a try before you buy opportunity and with this season's unique opportunity with the 19 year olds that missed out last year why the hell not if there's a player Hamish really rates.

I know we’ll have reservations about unfulfilled potential but if we’re ever going to try and get Lukosius and or Rankine then we need to throw the kitchen sink at them ahead of their next contracts. Can paint a picture that we’re improving and Gold Coast are destined to be shit forever. Back ourselves to get the best out of them here and we need more high end class.
