Crows have done a lot of positive things to assemble a team for the future with their trades to get good picks but i like many others think Hamish has dropped the ball a bit in drafting with a bucket load of top 20 picks where only time will tell how successful or unsuccessful he was.
But very clear only drafted 1 potential super star and as even Nicks said once it makes it easy to have 1st pick.
However forgetting what occurred in regard to list management I wanted after reading posters suggestions to delist and retire etc to highlight a concern of mine in regard to our structure as I keep reading all these players posters want to draft and recruit all mainly mids etc and not KPP players or key forwards of any type .
lets look at our KPP for this week
Forwards -- RT -- Tex and Frampton --- Well most posters want Frampton sent to Siberia and Tex has 1 more year left.
Who can we replace or add to in squad.
Himmelberg -- Posters want to trade for pack of crisps
Fogarty --- Posters think a flop and coaches don't seem to want to be patient with.
McAdam -- basically agree with others a 1 trick pony that doesn't want to work hard enough to use his speed to actually lead etc.
Lynch --- Been a fan but glory days passed with age and injuries.
Gollant -- Cook -- Done nothing yet but just might offer something not really a key forward .Though high hopes Cook but where unknown.

Defence -- Butts, Doedee and Kelly currently with Doedee should be the intercept defender that could be best in league and Kelly well not big enough and only a battler at best.
Who can replace in squad.
Murray -- Has he the pace or skill which is unknown.
Talia --- biggest fan but can we get him back and do they want to trade .
McAsey -- Still hope for but many already wrote off but looks a little slow and lacking aggression and confidence .
We can only hope as paid big price for .
Borlase --- although slow looks ok but but might not stay on list to add another cat B rookie.
Worrell -- not a KPP player and he must be frustrated like many of us why not given proper go as need height and skilled players in team.
Obviously my concern is whilst all keen to get bucket load of midfielders types we have to add to our KPP stocks and find some forwards that know how to score enough goals to win games .

We have no business going KP early with our draft picks. It's not a need. The reason it's not a need is we've got our anchor pieces for this rebuild. Thilthorpe for the forwards. Butts for defense.

The absolute last thing we need is key defenders at this point in time. Behind Butts you've got 4 people competing for that 2nd spot, and one we've spent pick 6 on. At the moment, it's a reassess in 2022 kind of deal. Likely what happens is McAsey wins the 2nd KPD gig with an uninterrupted preseason and what I hope we do is move Worrell to the 3rd tall and Doedee to Kelly's spot. That looks like the start of a dynamic defense on paper at least.

Same deal with key forwards, though not as cut and dry. We've got Thilthorpe to build around and 3 players fighting it out to be filthy partner. The only issue is it looks like all 3 are duds at this point, meaning it's likely we'll need to refresh at some point in the future. That said a 2nd KPF isn't an important position so we can hold off. Gollant will end up the third tall, looks a McGovern clone and Cook is likely a wing/half forward prospect.

The biggest hole on our list with young talent at the moment is in the midfield. You have the start of a dangerous midfield group, but it simply needs more. A lot more even.

Could be a case of Matt Crouch compo (pick 21 - 24) plus Demons second (Pick 32-37) for a late first.

Use 2022 second to get one of Dawson and Stephens (my preference Stephens given position).
If that works we'll have had a very good off season

Would free us up to use 2022 first on Isaac Keeler (NGA) and look at free agents or trading 2023 first for someone to fit a need.
Yeah... that's not going to work. This year you can't match bids on NGA players selected in the top-20. From memory, next year the limit rises to top-40.

Correct: The phase out of the NGA program will continue in 2022, with bids on nominated NGA prospects only able to be matched from pick 41 onwards.

Kelly shouldn't be automatic best 22, he's exactly the type of limited footballer that a bottom 6 best 22 needs to improve upon to become a genuine contender. The way our coaches and many posters here think is that our list is basically complete and our current best 22 is good enough if all fit. All we'll need to do is replace retiring players in a like for like manner. Newsflash, it's not true.

And on the other side of that coin, Kelly is the exactly the type of bottom 6 best 22 footballer a contending team need.
Of course like you said, we aren't contending.

Maybe he meant use our 2022 r1 pick to draft Keeler (assuming noone picks him before our pick).

In any case, I wonder if Keeler is pretty much a double up of the Thilthorpe type - maybe you can never have too much Thilthorpe? :grimacing:

Im ok with Tex doing a hamstring now and sitting out the remainder of the year now he's got his new contract.
We become a strong chance for pick 1.
Nope, his first and likely only AA jumper on the line and a sneaky chance at a Coleman. I'd 1000 x prefer he prove the doubters all wrong and notch up both.

I really don't think Rankine is worth a first rounder anymore
I tend to agree. He just hasn't put up the consistent performance (yet) that would be required of trading a 1st round pick

In that case, I'd be more willing to target him hard, now. I still think he has a relatively high ceiling, and would provide more to our current team than McAdam would

Based off what I've seen of Stephens this year, I can see us turning on him really quickly. Give me Dawson >>>> Stephens every day of the week and twice on Sundays

Dogs will be after points for Darcy. Their pick 17 will be on the table.
If we get pick 2..imagine if north pass on bidding for him. The dogs will have fresh memory from last year when we bid on JUH and if we tell them we will be bidding on Darcy, they might be very amenable to making a deal for that pick..especially if we can give them a good points boost

Smith is aging, and Hamill hasn't exactly proven himself yet. I'd say a spot is right there for the taking

The notion that Dawson isn't a need is ludicrous
We brought in Hinge less than 12 months ago.
Hamill is our future. Chayce Jones is moving in there. McPherson needs to be persisted with.
Milera will be coming back and likely going back before he can prove himself.
Smith still has a few seasons left.
We've been playing one small too many each week, bring in a key defender and this further reduces available spots.
I just don't see it as a need.

Hamill is a kid. Will be a jet.
That's such a non-substantial statement, though. If you're applying that judgement to what Hamill has shown so far, you could say that about many a young player in the league

Better to have a known quantity than a 'could be' that hasn't quite set the world on fire at AFL level yet. I definitely think Hamill has bonafide AFL potential, in fact I really like his potential based off his skillset, but you'd take the proven, very good half back in Dawson over him every day as it stands
