My perspective is:

Tradition: is something that is formed over decades, perhaps as mentioned ,constantly losing Finals or winning them or Great Games between two clubs etc.

Young tradition: is grasping at straws to back a feeble attempt at argument or joke.

If I have done something for the last 8 years (eg grand final party at my house) - I think that qualifies as tradition.
