Adelaide Cup Races

1 - Confident start to the day with Vicello who should be too good. Only possible danger is Racer's Run but Vicello has more upside to him and being Stokes trained and Dunn ridden, he's the one.

2 - Nice race here. Tramuntana is my pick. Opononi will set the pace and try and pinch it but look for Tramuntana to come home to score.

3 - Some value here with Raboob who will appreciate the extra pace anticipated here and will find it easier coming back from the Blue Diamond races.

4 - Bella Princess is the one here. Should prove too classy.

5 - Good sprint here. Mt Billy was an eye-catching run last week and will be primed for this. A good honest horse. My old fave Gunner Tom will be thereabouts but am worried about a lack of pace which he needs.

6 - Tough race. No Bet.

7 - I can't split these 3 - Pantani,Miss Theron and Singsdubbs. Pantani stays all day and his efforts to run fairly in the Brisbane and Perth Cups suggests he will be competive here in a weaker race than those 2. Miss Theron, I thought was the run of the Carlton Draught Stakes, the traditional leadup race. Might have left its run a little late but with Newitt on today you can be confident of a good ride. Singsdubbs is sort of an unknown quantity and it wasnt his latest effort in a highweight that impressed me. He has form around Bluetigeroo. I can't leave him out.

8 - Too many queries to be confident to have a bet.

9 - Zipanese is being aimed at better races and should have no trouble here with the only danger being Wildlife Girl.

Put a racing double on yesterday-
Gallic (3.80) into Splashing Out (6.50) @ 24.70, now into 3.20 and 4.60

Spashing Out has form around Magnus, Undue and Gold Edition and looks well placed here. :thumbsu:

slight change of topic - they've changed the race day to March and got a significant increase in attendance.

Now, the obvious part - change the length of the race, back to say 2400m. I'd say it'd attract a much better field, cos it looked like a few struggled to run the 3200 yesterday.

Part of me agrees in that it is time for the Cups to be brought back to 2400m in both Adelaide and Sydney. You either get third rate horses or anything that is half decent gets lumped with a huge weight. I wonder how many of the Adelaide Cup horses will go over the jumps this season?
Has there been an Adelaide cup winner that has done anything else since Subzero in the early 90's?

Unfortunately the pattern with owners these days is to go for the rich 2yo races hence we breed horses for speed. This is a major factor in the lesser standard of all staying races in this country these days, and if it werent for the internationals then the Melbourne Cup standard would be poor compared to years ago as well.

They run an Adelaide Cup at most Moonee Valley Friday night meetings. Thats the standard of yesterdays field.

No doubt it will come back to 2400m or even 2600m in the next year or two.

Was there a live TV coverage of Adelaide Cup day on Channel 7 or 9 in South Australia yesterday?

Nope, I believe it was in an attempt to get a crowd there.

Not really, On A Jeune ran second in the Melbourne Cup but I'm not even sure he won here (may have come second as well) - can't get my hands on that list at the minute.

Leave all the cups at 3200m, if we play with the few distance races we have pretty soon there won't be any left.

I think if it is left at 3200m then it will lose it's Group 2 status, as the quality of horses competing in it declines each year. There would only be ten or so 3200m races in Australia each year, why should half of them be the Cup races in each city?

Races like the Sydney Cup have lost most of their prestige, I am not sure what the prizemoney for it is but would it be in the top 50 races for the year in Australia as far as prizemoney is concerned?

The Sydney Cup is still worth $800,000. Easily in the top 20 prizemoney races in Australia.

The loss of 3200m races in Aus is a joke. The VRC/RV continually pump up the prizemoney of the Melbourne Cup, and with the reduction of 2 mile races in oz, will make it in the future impossible for our local horses to beat international ones which come over here proven at 2 mile +.

Maybe powers that be would rather see international horses win than our own?

I think it's a timing thing. There aren't enough quality distance horses going around in March. If the race was later in the year - August for instance, we'd attract a better field (but hope for better weather than normal for the crowd!).

If you're going to run the race in March, shorten it.

Exactly right.
The problem with the Adelaide Cup is that the drongos that run racing have put it on at the wrong time of year !
It may be OK. for those that want to get a sun tan but running it in early/middle March is a joke to those of us who reckon that racing is about the horses.
The Adelaide Cup used to be a very important pointer to the top staying races for the following spring, including the Melbourne Cup.
It is now a non entity as far as quality is concerned but it must stay as a 2 miler.
It will probably get a name change as well eg. the " HAVE A WINE " CUP. Heaven knows how many traditional, significant races in SA. have lost their name and status.

Agreed. The 2yo on cup day was some sponsor name and apparently it was the old Cinderella stakes. Why don't they put the former name in brackets underneath the new name at least? Silly me, that would make sense wouldnt it. :(

They've basically taken away Adelaide's Carnival. They have the cup at the start of March, then they have the Derby, Oaks and Goodwood still in May. Surely they need to find a home for their carnival. Problem is they've missed the boat cos Brisbane have been proactive with the push on their carnival.

The field was horrible the other day. If Gallic goes on and wins the Sydney Cup perhaps we might see the mentality of trainers shift, but otherwise you will probably just see the Adelaide Cup used as a warm up for the jumps horses prior to Oakbank and Warrnambool. Then again is the Sydney Cup really that good a race?

The only club in Australia who seems to put on events for stayers regularly is Moonee Valley with the 3000m races.

I was watching the races on the weekend and I think they said the Brisbane Cup was dropping back to 2400m. Did anyone else hear it or am I losing the plot!!

A google search has answered my own question!!

“I think we’ll ease up and think about Brisbane. He’s not entered for the Adelaide or Sydney Cups but with the Brisbane Cup being 2400m this year it looks a better option.
