I only saw this as a way to build a new HQ at West Beach. Leverage Baseball (and Softball) as an international/Olympic sport to get funding to build an HQ that benefits the Crows and Baseball/Softball in SA.

Since that seems to have never been the plan, why acquire them?

"with the team rising up the standings to be consistently competitive and featuring in a championship series. "

The old crows strategy, make the finals and nothing will happen

Fagan reminds me of a bloke that the turf club in Alice employed. Pure spin merchant. Started negotiating for the turf club to purchase a plant nursery that was for sale. He couldn't even do the job he was employed to do, let alone be trusted to run a nursery. He had been asked to look at generating more revenue.

But he was better than the bloke before him that used turf club funds to fund his gambling habit. He was that screwed he took cash advances out of the corporate credit card when at the Darwin Turf Club. You have to have an insatiable appetite to do that. He also contra'd out some sponsorship $ to F&B credit at Lasseters Casino that nobody else knew about and then kept using it after he was sacked.

edit - note that I'm not at all suggesting Fagan was a crook, that was just a tragic/funnyish tangent that arose. But he is the type to not be capable of focussing on what his job actually is.

To be fair, that's been an issue with SA based baseball sides for decades. An SA side hasn't won the Claxton Shield for decades.

The plan was to expand the Australian baseball league into areas of Asia like Korea and Japan I believe. I recall something about getting games broadcast on TV over there which they probably saw as potential revenue resource. Was probably our version of Port trying to take AFL into China, except baseball is a slightly better known sport over there.

When we acquired the Bite - the league added 2 teams (one from Auckland, and a Geelong-based Korean team).

Auckland withdrew from the league at the last minute last season, and pretty much burnt their bridges with the league in the process. While Geelong-Korea were terrible on field, apparently they did have some success carving out a niche market in Korea. Once COVID is under effective control, I can see them returning to the league

I think Fagan was an adequate CEO. Not great and certainly had no idea of the AFL industry.

He did leave us in a position to move to a new HQ and we did play off in a Grand Final.

Did a lot wrong though.

We've always been in a position to move to a new HQ. Fagan didn't do that.

He could have squandered it...I didn't say he put us in that position.

I said adequate, not great.

Compare that to the CEO down the road. Walked out of Port with the highest debt they have ever had (highest in the league?). With millions $$ wasted chasing dragons.
