Does anyone know if there's any way to get into the oval and access the stands on non event days. There's a photo I'd love to take that would require getting into one of the elevated levels of the stands. Don't think it would work in western so for now would need to be south with the higher the tier the better.

Is it fair to assume though they lock up access to anything higher than the ground level, even on training days etc or on those days would you be likely to wander around including those levels?

Was interested when I read a post regarding cricket support from each city and I remember it ranking it Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane in that order (I think). I did some research based on the previous ashes attendance on the first 4 days of the tests and Adelaide came out clearly on top, even with un unfinished stadium and the MCG's record attendance.

2013/14 Ashes Attendances per capita:

Adelaide: 1 in every 37th person
Melbourne (Day 1): 1 in every 47th person
Brisbane: 1 in every 71st person
Perth: 1 in every 99th person

If you were to say that Adelaide supports cricket more than Melbourne you would be laughed at but these stats seem to point in that direction... It would have probably been 1 in every 32nd person if AO seated 50k. Very interesting.

btw for those who say that Melbourne doesn't have a stadium that is big enough for it to compete with Adelaide in terms of attendance per capita, day 1 of the boxing day test wasn't sold out...

Actually it was. CA had access to 60000 tickets, they sold all of them. The other tickets were all MCC and AFL members.
It was for all intents, sold out.

Your argument is flawed. It is like saying the AFL GF is bigger than the soccer WC Final because it gets a bigger crowd. This argument. Is nonesense. Per capita attendance is a metric that means nothing. The NTFL GF drew 10000 last yr, one in every 8 people. Therefore the NTFL and Darwin is better than Melbourne. Mmmm. I am not going to make that argument in sensible company.

The AO is lovely and welcome to the 21st century adelaide. But can people stop making it out to be something unbelievable and unparalled. It isn't. It is a well designed modern stadium, finally.

Saw CA twitter say that there were 15k walkup tickets, but they must have sold all of them.

I am not basing my argument on different events though, I am basing it on the exact same event in the different host cities. It's not like it's different leagues or different codes. I am not suggesting that Adelaide is better than Melbourne in regards to its support of the ashes but it's interesting to note that Melbourne has nearly 4 times the population but does not draw close to 4 times the crowd. Approx 78k on day 2 and i think AO got 34-35k by memory

zaca, you didn't take into consideration the 5000 saints and PAC boys and surgeons and lawyers daughters who go to specifically not watch cricket.

And this will rise when the whole ground is complete and we're getting 40k+ for tests.

Just got tickets for NYE! Thought I would be able to buy a ticket on the day but obviously Adelaide had other ideas! Had to keep pressing 'find ticket' and luckily enough one came up

The SOLD OUT sign has gone up! Welldone Adelaide! If all the members turn up there will be 34,000 there! Where are all those doubters who were saying its a waste of money & that people won't come!

I'm pretty sure this will be the biggest crowd ever at Adelaide Oval for a domestic cricket match?!

Surely they will release the eastern stand seats for the match, like they did for the test match- no point having those seats there and not being able to use them.

I haven't seen any recent photos from inside the ground but im pretty sure they would be construction equipment on the ground level of the eastern stand, cant think of any other reason they wouldnt sell them

Capacity is estimated at 35,000. The new Southern Stand is split into SACA Members areas, reserved seating areas and unreserved seating areas. The eastern stand is not open.

They would have had to specially plan construction around having 5 days of public allowed into the stand without hardhats for the Test. Would be a lot of organisation for 4 x 6 hour blocks spaced throughout the next 25 days.

So Adelaide has now had 2 of the 3 biggest crowds in the big bash so far, and they would have been even bigger if the eastern stand was open. Think there may be a bit of curiosity factor but hopefully it's a sign of things to come for the footy!

Cricket will see a big uplift IMO. The ability have a walk up, under cover, great view to a big cricket match is a great thing. It was never an easy thing to check those boxes previously, unless you planned well ahead.

Actually general full viewing seating was sold out, the loss in capacity was from vacant seats in the AFL members and to a lesser extent the MCC members. Returns to my belief that if seats are being used by a certain time then they should be sold to the public. They do this at Wimbeldon and the proceeds go to charity.

Was able to attend a Big Bash game at AO and very impressed with the new stands and facilities, looking forward to coming back and watching an AFL game there.

Biggest plus for someone coming from interstate is being able to walk across to the ground instead of the trek to AAMI that we previously had to endure.

The new AO is fantastic, the BBL match the other night had a great atmosphere. Cannot wait until R2 when everything will be ready, that walk over the footbridge will be something!

Memorial Drive though needs to be upgraded ASAP, it's a massive eyesore when entering the ground from the southern end.

Apparently it might get an upgrade if we can be guarenteed an ATP or WTA event, and for that to happen we will have to steal it off someone.

Honestly the idea of having a new home for Tennis, Basketball and netball in the same vicinity of a new Adelaide Oval should have been part of the plan from the start. I never understood how it wasnt for the money involved - its not like Basketball and tennis use the facility at Mile End.

Memorial Drive really does need upgrading, but I'm not sure if 1 tennis tournament a year makes it worthwhile. Ideally the 36ers, Thunderbirds and Tennis SA can get together and put a case for a multi purpose venue.
