Opinion Adelaide Oval?

At the AGM at the start of this year, Eddie made special mention that he had inspected the new facilities for our members at the Adelaide Oval and they were superb.

Tonight will be Collingwood's first game at the oval.

Has anybody been to the AO already?

What are the facilities like?

What is the ground like? (Length, width, depth of pockets, condition, etc?). Which other ground is it most like?

FYI Primetime Pricey MegaBob SApies

I like the idea of playing there. It has a lot of history. I've been there for the cricket on the hill and it was a great place to watch cricket from. Probably makes for more of a suburban feel to a game of footy being less elevated. I'm interested to hear peoples thoughts on it as a venue. My only real gripe with the concept - why a Thursday AFL? :drunk:

I only took one photo last yesterday at training. I'll try to take a few more tonight.

You appear to have made a mistake.

It's 1 who will get the home ground, not 4.

The game will be at the MCG :D

Did anybody go?

Atmosphere on the telly looked awesome ... good for football :thumbsu:
Yep, 2nd time within a week being there. Its amazing. There is nothing like standing on a hill watching AFL, atmosphere was brilliant.

Like when Footy was Footy?

I went myself and sat on the northern mound. The Crows fans & club members were imposing & hostile, yet I remained unflappable. It annoys me that Collingwood doesn't impose itself on its protagonists each game that we play in Melbourne, like the Crows faithful showed.

I posted something similar on another maggies thread, but if you could pick up that stadium (or one of a similar size) and drop it on the current site of Victoria Park, it would be unbelievable.

Don't get me wrong, I love playing and attending games at the MCG, but turning the Adelaide Oval into a 'Collingwood' Oval would be a whole different football experience.

I went on Thursday night and it was great (apart from the Marching Band and girls twirling wands - our dancing troupe still takes the cake as the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen at the footy and the result of course).

You could compare it too an NBA game with the modern lighting effects, noise etc etc.

The place was awash with red, gold and black. The electronic advertising around the new stands on all levels was constantly the Adelaide colours flashing, with packs of crows flying across. The major screen near the old scoreboard was massive and low to the ground, and there was always things happening on there (when play wasn't live). The pre-game stuff they had on there was great - all about the players and the Club.

Sitting in the stand opposite it may of helped, but it looked bloody great. the graphics were very well done.

The potbelleez had the crowd going before the match, the atmosphere was great and though it was really starting to give me the sh*ts, the 19th man stuff they did got the crows crowd involved. The stadium is loud, but they do also play artificial crowd noise through the speakers at the top of the stand.

The G is just too big and some of it could be achieved at Etihad, but imagine having a stadium that's just for us, black and white all over the joint, massive screen at one end, an announcer getting the crowd involved, electronic hoarding black and white the whole time etc etc.

Pipe dream stuff, but Eddie get it done!

- Just make the ground a little wider.

I think Vic Park site would be too small and costs would be astronomical as be hard to get government support for a ground just for us with new grandstands, but you never know and a boutique Pies only stadium holding 50-60k would be unreal! Play all our non-blockbuster/interstate home games there and get the Vic Park atmosphere back!

But realistically only about 5-6 of our home games could be played there as the others have too large attendances.

We'd have to get another code playing on it as well and they seem happy with their current arrangements.
