Anyway, if Port were in Geelong's position, they'd be bringing in the fans. The image is mostly irrelevant, and is only being talked about because they're, to put it bluntly, shit. If Collingwood were using seating covers and had some recent spoons, people would be decrying the jumper – "it used to be white and black, not black and white!"
Yes but this is how the media talk about literally everything in football.

If two clubs do the exact same thing (i.e. recruitment/clash strip/coaching structure/whatever) and one of them is good and the other shit, the media will crap on relentlessly how coaching structure x is brilliant and works amazingly one year and then a year later how coaching structure x is terrible and always destined to fail.

Having Port Adelaide move to simply Adelaide would be the worst marketing decision ever and would ultimately lead to the death of the club.

The reason the team is such a failure support wise is because they only appeal to a certain breed of South Australians... that being Port Adelaide Magpies supporters of old. If I'm not mistaken PAFC were the equivalent of Collingwood in the SANFL, what South Australian would follow that club on their inception after being raised to hate them?

Who, looking in from the outside would support a terribly branded team such as Port, when there's the perfectly respectable side of Adelaide? Moving Port to Adelaide would be a bad decision, as then they would appeal to nobody, they'd likely lose a large portion of their supporters and it wouldn't help them gain any either.

They definitely need to rebrand, maybe even drop the Power moniker, Sharks, Mariners, Pirates and Black Diamonds were all considered before Power was announced, and they're all a step up IMO.

Port Adelaide Albatrosses. Then they can be the albatossers from Alberton !

I'd like to see them tap into their history more. I know it'd probably be impossible, but if they had an ad like
where they have just their famous players sort of "video shopped" together to form a play or something, I think that'd work really well if they could execute it properly.

But what does it do?
Who'd care if they're the Power, Sharks, Pirates or whoever. (personally, I would have gone with Pirates or Sharks). It makes no difference, they're still Port Adelaide. There is only ONE option that MIGHT get back some traditional supporters. GO back to the Magpies, traditional jersey too.

Unfortunetly, won't happen unless North Korea test weapons of mass destruction on Melbourne and wipe out Collingwood so there's no point in worrying about that.

Rebranding improves an image there's no denying that...
From an outsider's perspective, the best thing about Port is their guernsey.
Look at Brisbane, their image has been stained every since they've adopted the paddlepop Lion, and subsequent jumper, they've lost a lot of Melbourne based supporters because of it too.

Sharks was the obvious choice. I remember thinking at the time wtf is a power? Such a nothing name. I'm still sure it will find its way to the dust bin eventually. A club with such a history deserves better as far as nickname and mascot go

It was a massive eff up leaving a Magpies side in the SANFL. Should have been a clear cut move of the entire club to the AFL. Also should have retained their famous jumper with the away team wearing a clash guernsey when they play Collingwood. Really shithouse decimation of the club identity went down.

I must admit I have never been a big fan of the nick name. It was just a really awkward time to rebrand a football club(mid 90's).

At the same time, 5-10 years olds are getting into footy, and don't remember the SANFL as a decent competition.
but those kids dont exist in isolation. they are being parented by Crows fans who still hate the Power. true some kids go against their parents teams, but not often

for instance, everyone was still being taught to hate Collingwood for years, but why? they hadnt won anything for decades so it wasnt just that people were jealous of their success, but that kids were born to non-Collingwood supporting parents who taught them to follow their own teams and hate the opposition.

when the Crows were formed, it took players from the whole of the SANFL as a 'team for all South Australians' , including Port Magpies. In fact many Port magpie fans still follow the Crows (though some went across to the Power obviously) including two of my friends. they see the Power as an AFL manufactured entity that is trying to trade off their SANFL magpie teams history.

the Power has existed for 16 years, and even in its successful years has made no dent at all into Adelaides following, it has in fact gone backwards.

Could've been worse. If we entered the AFL today we'd probably have an American franchise rip-off name like the Suns/Giants.We'd probably be the Port Adelaide Yankees FFS!

I'd drop the Power name officially and just let the supporters make the call. If the Power sticks so be it. If something else like Sharks/Blacks/Ravens catches on then fine. I'd be happy to just be known as Port tbh.

When I grew up they were known as Port. Just 'port'.

They wore black and white striped lace up jumpers, played at Alberton and played hard (days you hoped were windy to carry away the smell).

For 1 AFL premiership and a heap of records nobody wants , they've destroyed everything "port' ever was.

Surely better than irrelevance in a state league? East Freo would say so.

Sure is tough having a great history to live up to. To bad you wouldn't know anything about that.

There's nothing wrong with Suns and Giants - They actually suite the American teams perfectly.
Suns - The dessert sun of Arizona.
Giants - The giant buildings of New York.

Suns is even a great name for Gold Coast. Suits that part of Queensland brilliantly and a good fit for the Gold Coast.

GWS Giants is a mind **** though. Though, it is a better name then the idea of Celtics that was thrown around at the time. I think I wanted Cougars for some reason. Wanted a cat, but Panthers was taken by Penrith and I didn't want to alienate potential Eel fans.

On Port, I admitt, Power is a crap nickname, but is it worth the change?
Like, it would sound better to be the Sharks or Pirates or Raiders or Buccaneers or something like that (I like the idea of a ferocious nickname related to the sea when your team name has 'Port' in it.)
But if you made the change, what benefits does it actually have?

Magpies has the benefit of bring back some of those oldschool Port Magpie supporters.

It sounds better, but is it worth it?

We're trying to have a serious discussion here. There wasn't any malice in the tone of rayven's post. Why take a pot shot at Adelaide?
He's showing respect to the old Port Adelaide and you just attack him?
Take it to Bay 13.

Wasn't any malice? It was the typical BS comment showing a very fake reverence for Port Adelaide's history in an attempt to put the club down.

Yes this is a very serious thread that brought you such posts as:
rebrand them to the Port Adelaide Poo's
My point is their irrelevance in the Victorian league as well.

He pointed out you have a great tradition and the last 5 years has destroyed your reputation so you say Adeliade has no history? Yeah, keep telling yourself that mate

I'm being brutally honest. It's not just embarrassing to Port, it's embarrassing to South Australian football purists.

What? The fact that Port aren't as strong in a national competition as they were in the SANFL (the second best league in the country) is somehow embarrassing to people who clearly hate the PAFC? I will gladly take struggling at the elite level versus being forgotten and fading away like Norwood in the SANFL. It is quite interesting how the people who call us irrelevant are always the first to want to jump in, kick us while we are down and go on interminably about how the PAFC has some how shit on it's own history. I wonder if there is a correlation there?

This is such a loser mentality.....it says don't leave your comfort zone in case you f@#k up.

I'd much prefer going through tough times and coming out the other side a deserving winner than years in purgatory playing it safe. Port wanted to prove it could be the best of the best and it did. Now the job ahead is to do it again.

Whether we're winning the premiership or losing to the start-up teams, hell even when we're getting galacticly raped in the Grand Final, being apart of the big show with all its highs and lows has been eternally better than living the alternate reality in which we didnt have a go and were left to ponder what might have been.
