Could anyone fill me in any more on the demise of the Rams in Adelaide.

I know a fair bit on their demise, so please no rubbish like "league sucks, etc." , but would like to know if you have some more detail.

This is an interesting topic for me and I would appreciate some knowledgeable replies.

Thanks guys and gals.:p

Ok - From what I know and remember (which isn't alot) the Rams went something like this :

Set up by News Limited as part of Super League in 1997, The Adelaide Rams seemed like a good idea at the time.

For many years throughout the 80's and early 90's the Australian Rugby League had played one game per year at Adelaide Oval on a Friday night. This fixture was usually a roaring success with around 20,000 attending each time (this is more than they get to Rugby League games in Sydney btw) Encouraged by this, the Super League people set up the Adelaide Rams as part of the Super League thing to try and at least give the appearance that Super League was a 'national' competition as opposed to the Australian Rugby League (ARL) which was all the old inner-Sydney clubs and had very little by way of participation outside the Sydney area.

At first the Rams did very well, playing out of the old Thebarton Oval (the ex-home ground of West Torrens) they got good crowds in the early days and were remarkably competitive on the field, just missing the 5 team Super League finals in 1997.

For the next year, Rugby League got back together again to form one single competition, part of the agreement was that a few of the 'artifical' Super League teams had to go. Hunter Mariners, Perth Reds and Adelaide Rams were excluded from the new competition.

It didn't matter anyway - Adelaide Rams were finished as it was. Their crowds dropped away dramatically towards the end of 97 as the novelty of watching Rugby League in Adelaide quickly wore off. The club never made a single brass razoo in revenue and News Limited lost millions on the venture.

The problem with the Rams is that Adelaide has virtually no interest in Rugby League by itself, and, unlike Perth or Melbourne, there is no large community of New Zealanders, South Africans, Melanesians or Polynesians that would form a natural supporter base for the club.

A pity really - I think there is still a place for some kind of Rugby presence in South Australia, but obviously the Rams were not the way to go about it.

cheers

For a start Ms Storm, put this in the general board where it BELONGS.
Secondly, from what i can remember the Adelaide Rams were fukin useless on field. They were in the comp for two years if i remember correctly. First year they finished last or second last. Second season they were going along nicely in last spot before they moved from the Adelaide Oval to Hindmarsh Stadium (home of the Adelaide City Soccer Club) where they then decided to win a few games and score a few trys.
I dont remember the Rams ever being at Thebby tho im probably wrong. But they definatly played most of their games at Adelaide Oval before moving to Hindmarsh.

Who cares anyway, rugby league is the most pathetic 'sport' there is.

As do many Rugby supporters.

BTW why is Rugby called Football?

Just thought I'd ask as I've always wondered why.

One is football.
The other is Drugby.
This should be posted in general talk.

Yea Adelaide Rams played at Adelaide Oval and then Hindmarsh Stadium

They were preety crap, but i remember once they beat Balmain 42-0 at home! LOL

I didnt care when they got axed, but now that im more into rugby, i wish they were still their! NRL should be bloody changed to NSWRL or somethin.

The rams were also broke, and the SA gov. didnt wanna pump any money into them.

And for anyone interested RAMS HQ is now owned by Adelaide City S.C

GO YOU CROWS!
LONG LIVE THE RAMS!

Sorry.........

Yeah I did realize after I posted the thread that it should have gone to "General" Discussion.

Thanks for "MOST" of the replies...especially BSA and QT. and Macca 19....I really appreciate what you have posted.

By the way guys, its ALL FOOTY TO ME.. not aerial ping pong, basketball footy, drugby, thugby.........

that is ignorant thinking by SOME OF YOU.!!

Cheers.
Thanks Again.:D

why not make a rugby board?

so when we open up our "AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE"
we dont have to read rugby threads?
that way people wont even see them if they dont open up the rugby board..

just an idea...

I was born in South Australia and lived here all my life and I hate AFL football so much, I love SANFL aussie rules football and have always followed Glenelg. I love NRL over AFL anyday and can't wait until the finals start, love the mighty Manly Sea Eagles I also was a huge fan of the Adelaide Rams, still miss them even today, I had to drive 2 hours from the country just to watch the Rams and loved it. Adelaide Rams you will always be in my heart, miss you guys.

So you suffer from Enochlophobia (fear of crowds) and had to settle for NRL and SANFL - mind you some of those SANFL crowds can get pretty big.

I imagine Aldi could have done a milk sponsorship deal with the Rams had they been around today. Could have had the Oaks of Penrith against the Rams of Adelaide while all of the 4000 watching sip on their Farmers Union Iced Coffee.

You hate AFL so much that you went searching through 18 years worth of threads on an AFL forum in order to comment.
