Adelaide, so much more than half an hour behind...

It kind of seems like it's 16 years behind and been hit by the millennium bug.

(Seriously though, I hope people whose medical situations require power have the back up options they need to last for as long it sounds like it'll be out.)

No Wi Fi and phone batteries slowly going flat for S.A residents.......

Could be a good night on here with no S.A posters around! :D

In all seriousness though stay safe peeps in S.A and it is headed our way to Melb overnight and into tomorrow but it is expected to weaken according to the lovely Jane Bunn! :fire: :hearts::hearts:

170 km/h gusts and waves approaching 30 feet in the Bight I'm told. Imagine being at sea in those conditions!

The house gets eerily quiet in a blackout too, you don't realise the amount of cumulative noise emitted by the fridge, tv even when off, etc.

We had a pretty lengthy blackout at my house a couple of months ago after the power pole outside my house essentially exploded.

All I could hear was the screaming toddler in the apartment next to mine

The Age is reporting a similar blackout of the state very nearly happened in July. And the state's heavy reliance on renewable energy has undermined their supply security.

I'd be more inclined to blame the privatisation of electricity services and infrastructure, and the fact that the national electricity grid is an abject failure.

I find it weird that one of the pro-coal, anti-renewable arguments is that renewable energy is expensive - yet the article says that power stations were closed when they became noncompetitive. (It actually says "uncompetitive", but I'm pretty sure that's not a word, and the firefox spell checker agrees.) It also seems to suggest that those "inefficient" power stations should've remained open.

Even more bizarre is the articles claim that South Australia is more reliant on renewable energy than any other region in the developed world. This is completely false - it's not even the most reliant state in Australia. Tasmania has it covered easily (as do a couple of the Scandinavian countries.)

The research behind this article is stunningly bad. Perhaps the article was written in a hurry for tomorrows paper, and research is just a victim of Fairfax's early deadlines.

Hope dishwashers in pubs aren't too badly effected

Extraordinary situation to have an entire state have no electricity.

Less extraordinary when you consider it's equivalent to 22% of NSW having no electricity.

But yeah somebody's getting sacked or quietly shifted into another role.
