With the exclusion of Shirley, it appears we are trying to develop other players to develop more defensive side to their games.

Last night Vince and Knights were used in these roles. A general question is who do people believe could become Adelaide's number 1 tagger.

My personal feeling is that VB could develop into a K Cornes type Run with player

No, Shirley was left out of the side as he is not versatile enough. By leaving Shirley out of the side and having other player (like knights) play as a tagging option, NC is trying to develop more flexibility in his players.

Robert Shirley has to develop more flexibility in how he plays the game and be able to play more than one role.

Thats what i am trying to argue.
VB has a great attacking game as displayed during the second half of last year, but also has quality defensive ability. Very Athletic and reminds me a great deal of Kane Cornes.
Also i agree with NC decision not to play Shirley against teams with no real dominant midfielder.

Shirley has been left out because he can't hurt his man the other way.

Sloane would be in line I imagine, VB can always do it, but I don't think a tagger is a high priority.

Good in theory, crap in reality.

Shirley is easily the best tagger we have - he's developed to a stage where he can do a good job defensively, and still contribute 12-16 good touches a game.

We don't have anybody else capable of doing that job without sacrificing their attacking game to a level where the cost is more than the reward.

Irrelevant for a team that is rebuilding. I'm sure if they were still playing Clarke would be our number 1 ruckman and Bassett our number 1 midsized defender.

I'm sure if we were a contender this year, he would be picked every week.

Unfortunately, when a team is in rebuild mode, average, ageing players must get sacrificed.

Correct, that's why michael doughty days are numbered.

I can accept and agree with that - but isn't that kind of self-defeating when you're forced to put Chris Knights in a tagging role, which he's rarely done and struggles with, to the level it seriously reduces his effectiveness as a ball-winner?

yes. Chris Knights is a ball winner not a tagger. Maybe we have to bite the bullet and give the likes of Sloane or even Cook a run with job.

Could have also quoted 5aa last night where he said the same thing. Didn't know it was a requirment to quote sources on big footy now.

Doughty has a few more tricks in his bag than Shirls.

As an aside, how much has Bryce Gibbs improved in the last 12 months. He has gone from a tentaive little boy to a serious footballer in the space of 1 year. He will win a Brownlow, no doubt about it.
