Adelaide's decline

Classic example of a Big Club that got lazy and complacent because the $$$ keep rolling in no matter what.

I suspect it will get a lot worse before it gets any better.

You only have to look at the depth and youth on the crows list to realise that they are in for a world of hurt in the next couple of years and need to hit the rebuild in full flight and nail a few top end draft picks.

Its too early to tell on their recent draft haul and what impact those players will have on their rebuild but the further we look into their list and their depth thins out very quickly. The players in the 20-25ish age bracket which should be ready to step up now and replace their older brigade just simply doesn't exist or exist to any strength. This includes players who played on the weekend like Atkins, Crocker, Keays, Kelly (Understand he was concussed for that game) and Murphy, all of who have shown nothing of significance which indicates they would 'make it' as a essential 22 players without significant support around them like they have the past few years.

Then there is the depth in that age bracket which didn't play, Knight, Gallucci, Poholke, Stengle, Frampton, Wilson and Himmelberg, all of which have again been given enough game time to see what they are worth and have not established themselves at AFL level or shown that they can be consistent performers.

This is the group that should now be prepared to step up and take their game to the next level and step into the gaps left by the likes of betts, walker, Lynch, sloane, talia etc who are towards the end of their careers (or left the club) and their best years behind them.

On-top of those players, there is the ones who haven't developed or shown they will reach that next stage in their career. These are the players like Milera who was always talked up as the next big thing down at west lakes but aside from a game or two which are few and far between, he hasn't developed into that next stage and become a player who regularly influences games. I would put Fogerty into this bracket also, although still only a few years into his career, aside from 1 game against WCE he really hasn't shown he will be a regular contributor outside of having a good set shot. He is well built but aside from that he cant influence the contest enough and doesn't have any other skills that make him a standout. I can see him developing into a Membrey type player who may have a good season or two a long way down the track but he doesn't offer too much else aside from the odd goal a game.

They need to make some tough decisions and move on some older players while they may have some currency and go for a full scale rebuild and hope in 4-5 years they will again be ready to start challenging for a top 4 position.

Not every player is going to be explosive from year 1, like Rozee/Butters/Duursma.
Players like Dangerfield/Martin took a while to get going. Jones might not be a better player now, but he could be in a few years - he also might not be of course.
Like many Crows fans for a while complained about us drafting Doedee instead of Burton (who did more early on in his career, while Doedee was stuck in SANFL for a while), but many have no problem with that now.
I learnt not to write off young players too early after bagging Amon for 3 seasons. Still it's nice to draft some big kids who are walk up starters, crows need a big bodied mid badly. I was happy to see no greenwood or yoleman smith, they should have traded out Sloane, tex, crouches.
Culture at west lakes has gone rotten, it's the old eastern suburbs boys club. They have regressed and the competition has progressed, they haven't drafted aggressively believing their list was there abouts, their defensive counter punch style of play is a one trick pony that has been surpassed by everyone in the league, crows used to have elite fitness, strong defence/ rebound and play an attacking handball based sa style of footy. Now every club in the afl plays a better play on running game than them.
A rebuild can take 2-3 years, but teams that do that normally have a small core of high performing senior guns (crows seniors are poor, tex is a pathetic joke), are able to attract a few mid aged gun recruits (crows can't keep them let alone attract any) and nail the draft (which is easier said than done) and they are well run professional organisations with culture and history. Crows don't even have a proper clubhouse at the moment and have always been viewed as little more than a cash cow for the sanfl by those who run it. They have conducted a war on the media in Adelaide and soured many journos and sponsors and All this at a time when their neighbours are building a young powerhouse list with a host of juicy father son picks on the horizon and any major restructuring will be in post covid world.
The crows are in more trouble than the early settlers, this is their lowest ebb, I can't see them getting out of this hole, or beating port for many years.

Adelaide were actually very good recruiters. And talent identifiers. But there's something about the place that makes players want to leave. The amount of talent that has left that club is phenomenal. No other clubs outside the expansion sides see that kind of exodus. It puts way too much pressure back on the recruiters to replace them, and they've seem to get it wrong recently, or had the wrong strategies and those players that have left are bloody hard to replace. Outside of Dodee and Milera they dont really seem to have much young talent coming through. Their under 25s would be the worst in the comp.

The Footy Park precinct, now more than ever is a very barren, bleak, stark and sterile place. There is nothing welcoming about it. It just has a beige shit vibe and the Crows need to get the fu** away from there. The place has no soul and at the moment the Crows don't seem to either.
We are trying hard to get away from Footy Park, hence the North Adelaide attempted move. I think that will get over the line eventually, a global pandemic has just put it on the backburner for a bit, but the Adelaide City Council know they can’t afford to maintain the Aquatic Centre long term.

I have no idea what is happening there, but the old saying is when it rains it pours. Here is hoping, for the Adelaide fans, that it stops raining pretty soon. This is a great year to pump games into their younger talent.

Look it wouldn't be another one of my dodgy posts if i didn't plug the podcast a mate and I have been doing. We have recently moved onto Spotify and spend the majority of this one on the AFL. Please have a listen, if you like it keep listening, if you don't let us know what we can do to make it stronger.

Ricciuotto justifying the reasons why every single one of the players who leFt over the last ~5 years on the triple m Adelaide. Not ONCE did he admit they may have stuffed up or made the wrong call. Only 3 answers were “want to get youth in the team”, “got offered a massive contract from another team” “didn’t want to pay overs”. Justified every single one of them!

Every single one of them except Dangerfield (who he said was always going to go back to Moggs Creek) was either. "they offered them twice as much money" or we have to get youff into the team. Admitted they were still paying some of Betts and Jenkins contracts (this may have already been known?). Gunston, Cameron, Lever, Keath, McGovern, Greenwood all left for money and the Crows didn't want to keep any of them bar Cameron.

The final line was brilliant. "If we kept some of these guys we wouldn't have been able to keep Sloane, Tex or Dodee." Lol.

Probably wouldn't have had many other players too if they didn't lose all these guys...

Too much hypotheticals

Of course, it's never one's fault.

Hence his internal review looking at everyone else.

If you can't admit your own faults you've got no hope. Well unless your Jordan and you are daylight ahead of everyone.

God, isn't it just completely delusional? Yes, one or two may well leave for money - but when it's a pattern, you have to ask questions of yourselves and your culture.

The leadership skills required to be a footy captain are a different type of leadership required to be a board member.

In the words of our fwit premier , whose long running Dan dynasty is almost over," why would you want to go to Adelaide".

Adelaide coaching great Malcolm Blight has teed off at new Crows coach Matthew Nicks for his defensive mindset in the wake of a horror loss to Port Adelaide.

The Crows went down to the Power by 75 points on Saturday, leading Nicks to tell Triple M “At this point we’ve got a fair bit of work to do around prioritising defence.”

Speaking on Sportsday SA, Blight took serious issue with Nicks’ comments. “To say that you prioritise defence means that those blokes in the middle of the ground are going to be too worried about a midfield player getting the ball,” he said.

“It’s rubbish. Unless you’ve got the best team and the greatest defence and the best forward line, you’re not going to win. So you can’t pinch games by playing like that (defensively). I guarantee you now you’ll end up kicking five goals like they did.

“They’ll go up to the Gold Coast and if they can’t win this one they are gone.

“To actually prioritise defence, it’s rubbish. “It is a rookie coach with a rookie idea. I’ll tell you now, it won’t work.”

Sad to see what cronyism has done to the Crows.

They had one of the best footy administrators in David Noble, one of the best recruiters in Hamish Olgivie, had a good coach tragically murdered but replaced him with a very adequate coach who continued on with excellent skill development and a good game plan and have now tossed a lot of it away.

There's no shame in rebuilding after a premiership push. In fact there's a few successful clubs who are afraid to even do it and instead of going backwards to go forwards they are stuck treading water.

But rebuilding needs probably as much care and attention as any other strategy and it needs a heap of unity and support from everyone involved.

It could only happen to us.. so typical. to get so close to a flag after 19 years in 2017 to completely fall apart is such a Crows thing to do. This club $ hits me to tears.
The internal and external reviews only got rid of a few problems but i think not until Chapman, Roo and Fagan are gone things wont change.. hell, I even think Tex needs to go. Picked a good year to bottom out. shortened season that is a mess and will always have some sort of asterisk next to it. hopefully we finish bottom 2 and we get a decent compo pick for B Crouch. hit the draft hard with 4 picks in the top 25.

Should never have picked up Gibbs.. wasted pick 10 & 16 in 2017 on that spud and in 2016 wasted picks on Galluci and Poholke. I mean we picked up Poholke over Jack Graham FFS. Things would be different if we held onto Lever, Cameron and Mcgovern (Gov was decent at the crows)
Going to be a long 4 or 5 years for the Crows.

Now we have Ricciuto taking pot shots at past players like Lever and leaking their salary. Pretty unprofessional imo

Geez, how unlucky are the Crows to have all of those star players ask to leave for reasons that are all entirely not the Crows' fault? What an awful coincidence. Such bad luck. If only there was something they could have done about it.

Well he isn’t worth 800k, is there something wrong with that statement?

It didnt need to be said. Irrelevant if its true or not.

Riccuitto should be worrying about the players the Crows have, not bragging about the players they dont have any more.

What an absolute tool. Speaking about the salaries of contracted players at other clubs.

Epitomises everything wrong with his adminstrative abilities.

Funny how you’ve started posting on the MB again after disappearing the las

Oh hang on, so it’s ok for anyone outside the club to continually bring it up, even players who left 8 years ago, but the club can’t respond? Right. Someone better tell Eddie to stop putting his foot in his mouth then.

Yes it’s ok for outsiders to bring it up. Of course it is. But it’s not appropriate to respond like Ruccuitto did. He should be worried about what is happening inside the club.

I don’t recall Eddie mouthing off directly at players who have left the club and/or criticising the salaries they are on. Riccuitto is part of the problem at that club.

I don't understand why Adelaide gets so defensive. McLeod questions the culture so they come out on the public push back against it. There is some questioning of list management, and Roo comes out firing against it.

It's ok to not be a successful club all the time and Adelaide isn't the first club to fall after a senior team got close to a flag. If they're going to come out firing every time anyone criticises them, they're going to get in an endless back and forth for no benefit.
