Adelaide's decline

I don't understand why Adelaide gets so defensive. McLeod questions the culture so they come out on the public push back against it. There is some questioning of list management, and Roo comes out firing against it.

It's ok to not be a successful club all the time and Adelaide isn't the first club to fall after a senior team got close to a flag. If they're going to come out firing every time anyone criticises them, they're going to get in an endless back and forth for no benefit.
I don’t think you quite realise how much the media has attacked the Crows over the last 3 years (some of it has been warranted but definitely not all). We cleared out a bunch of players last year so we could begin a rebuild, but they then get included in an argument about our poor culture? I can see why he’s sick of shit getting slung at the club.

Yeah that's true that I don't know how much the crows have copped, but in my opinion, it's the job of a footy director to wear it. The crows aren't the first team to cop it heavily from the media. It's not a huge deal that Roo fired back, but I don't think it helps. It's awkward for him to be commenting on a) salaries of players at other clubs and b) their performances.

I realise we aren’t the first club to cop it, but when the media are piling in over minor things like the Barossa training breach then you can understand Roo getting to the end of his patience. Our club seems to be blamed for any off field issue these days even when it doesn’t involve us. He probably should’ve just kept his mouth shut, but I also don’t blame him for saying it.

They got an eight page lift out in The News when they beat Essendon in a practice game, time has a way of balancing things out.

The Crows deserve it because they keep ****ing up basic stuff that's integral to running a successful club

Interesting point made on AFL360 tonight;
Roo reeled off all the players that the Crows didn't want to retain because it would have cost the club too much money.
Yet, they've been paying at 100% of the cap, meaning there a number of spuds on the Adelaide list clearly getting overpaid at the moment based on recent performance, given they haven't played finals in 3 years.

''Instead Mitch chose to stay with the Crows for half the contract dollars and half the length of the contract time instead of going home to Perth.”

"The reasons Mitch left the Crows was because of the camp and the Adelaide football department and that's it.”

Mackay Gibbs Lynch way past it and bludging on $2m a year between them.

This could be seen coming from a mile away. Ricciuto, however frustrated he may be at people criticising the club, has an obligation to cop it and do his job properly. This becomes a needless back and forth that does his club no favours.

“Again with Charlie, it was not the money. Let's just leave it at that!", he said.

You'd hope that Roo keeps his mouth shut.

McGovern wanted out during 2017, but that’s a nice attempt at goal shifting from the least trustworthy player manager since Nixon. Even Richmond supporters are defending the Crows on Twitter, Colin Young is a grub of a bloke and loves a cheap headline.

Gov signed for less on the proviso that if Lever left, his contract would be renegotiated up to whatever he’s on at Carlton now. His form and fitness tapered (does this sound familiar Carlton fans?) and so we pulled that offer. He cracked the shits and left.

He’s stuffed either way now. He either doubles down and becomes completely engulfed in an argument that reflects badly on him and the club or he leaves it and the manager’s version becomes the accepted truth.

Surely you don’t trust a word that Colin Young says? Surely he’s ****ed enough clubs over now to have even the remotest shed of credibility.

Mackay is on a very reduced one year deal this season, the 400k contract is well and truly gone. Charlie Dixon has been gouging Port for years, is he going to return 50 goals in a season anytime soon?

Every single one of them except Dangerfield (who he said was always going to go back to Moggs Creek) was either. "they offered them twice as much money" or we have to get youff into the team. Admitted they were still paying some of Betts and Jenkins contracts (this may have already been known?). Gunston, Cameron, Lever, Keath, McGovern, Greenwood all left for money and the Crows didn't want to keep any of them bar Cameron.

The final line was brilliant. "If we kept some of these guys we wouldn't have been able to keep Sloane, Tex or Dodee." Lol.

He speaks like Walker is still a top player that still commands huge money and who the Crows could not afford to lose. Truth be told it has been over 2 years since Walker was that, and given his age prioritising keeping him over the host of other players that left seems foolish.

We are trying hard to get away from Footy Park, hence the North Adelaide attempted move. I think that will get over the line eventually, a global pandemic has just put it on the backburner for a bit, but the Adelaide City Council know they can’t afford to maintain the Aquatic Centre long term.

I heard of this story of the crows moving to North Adelaide. Did that mean the crows were going to train at North Adelaide Roosters home ground at Prospect oval?

Not a bad Idea. Despite the field is very small, the ground is only a few kms outside of the city.

Nah, they want to buy the Aquatic Centre site and turn nearby parklands into training ovals.

Well Charlie Cameron was born in Mount Isa In Queensland.

His Family moves to Newman in WA, Which is 1,186 kms away from Perth when he was 17. Plays for Newman saints for a year. Swan Districts looks at him and plays for them in the WAFL in 2013.

He then kicks 17 goals from 15 games and is picked up by the crows who he spends 3-4 years with.

So Charlie Cameron decided to join Brisbane to go back to his "Home" State.

He bought his pub - his best mate now, that’s why he defends him and loves him so much and Walker can not put a foot wrong. It’s hilarious how his ego is only bringing the club down more and he cant see it

Emphasis on the were part. Ever since Matt Rendell was unceremoniously dumped, the recruiting at the club has gone down hill. The list management is also terrible, though headed by the son of another long time employee he will have a job for life. I would add Fogarty to your list with Doedee and Milera, though Fogarty had a stinker on the weekend, though not many didn't for us. I also think Jones, McHenry and McAsey are worth persisting with. The under 25's are considered bad because they have been given little exposure whilst we wasted games on guys like Mackay and Gibbs.

They need to move from Footy Park, which is all the things you have described, and not close to the city. Despite this, the Aquatic Centre Plan was never going to work, due to the local residents and the Adelaide City Council. Thebarton Oval would have been a much better alternative. I know you and I have disagreed on another issue just recently, but you could not be more correct this one, especially the second part.
I am not going into too much detail about Matt Rendells departure. He said something about recruiting Indigenous players with one white Parent, or something along those lines.

He was given a chance to defend himself on footy classified shortly after he was kicked out at the crows. I remember seeing that too. He was basically hung out to dry. The media invited him and tried to portray him as a racist. But the words were misunderstood as a racial slur. I am glad he said his side of the story.

What he was trying to say is, Indigenous players that get the chance to adapt to city life and Play in the SANFL, WAFL or VFL for a season are more likely to succeed. Guys Like Waganeen, Mainwaring, Winmar, and the Matera Brothers easily adapted to city life before being drafted by AFL clubs and beceme Good AFL players.

Liam Jurrah on the other hand. He was talented, dont get me wrong. But he went from living in an Isolated area in his famly to Living In Melbourne. To me, he was living from one extreme to another. To him, that takes a fair bit of effort to do that.

Matt Rendell is an unsung hero in that 2007-2011 period. He was the crows main recruiter/ talent scout.

You look at the guys the crows recruited under him, especially in that 2007-09 drafts.

2007: Dangerfield, Andy Otten and Taylor walker. I will also add Jared Pretrenko. He was rookie listed but was solid in his 6-7 years at the crows.

2008: Phil Davis, Shaun McKernan, Rory Sloane. Ricky Henderson was a rookie pick

2009: Daniel Talia, Jack Gunston. Matthew Wright and matthew Jansch were both from the rookie list.

Not a bad draft haul in those 3 years. Crows made the Prelim in 2012. Yes they got done for the Kurt tippet scandal that cost them 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2012 and 2013 drafts. Did it hurt the crows? to a small extent. But it wasnt a devastaing blow when you look back at it. Those 18 and 19 year olds in 2007 draft like Dangerfield and Walker were 22-23 year olds in 2012. Crows narrowly missed out of finals in 2013-14 then had a finals run from 2015-7 including a grand final in 2017.

I always loved comparing the crows 2012 side to Carltons 2002 side. Carlton got done for breaching the salary cap in 1999-2001. They lost 3 1st rounders and 3 2nd rounders from 2002-04 when they needed it. Hence from 2005-7, they tanked for 3 years to get pick 1 for 3 years in a row to eventually make finals from 2009-2011.

The crows on the other hand, got done for salary cap breaches with kurt tippet which resulted in losing 1st and 2nd rounders in 2012 and 2013. Yey didnt finish bottom 6 in 2013 and 2014, mainly due to good recruiting god kids in that 2007-09 period in which in 2013-4 they were 22-24 year olds and in the crows best 22 or at worst rotating fringe/depth players.

Despite some of those players traded off later down the track, The crows did well despite the set back on the Kurt tippett situation.
