I agree to a degree with it being said that some of these players individually being injured or playing poor has coincided with the year we've had, and some are more important than others (structure, specific things they bring etc), but i think you could throw a lot into that category that all adds up to this year we've had..

Bocks injury plagued year, porplyzia no pre season with bad pelvic problem, knights year been a write off, vince being in worse form + injuries, johncock in and out all year, edwards form drop and eventual retirement, doughty form drop, burton injured and was low on confidence/fitness when playing, mackay injured various times, no andy otten and so on..

Some are more important than others but add most of them back in fit/in form and leave any one player out and i bet we still get by fine.. A certain individual one or two may impact more than others but not enough to stuff our season..

Old saying ( time makes the heart grow fonder) I think very relevent on this site with posters.
EG Previous Moran -- missing link in ruck was going to solve our problems when going bad ( hell the guy has hardly played for us andlucky to be 2- 3 ave- good games
Symes -- When going bad and was out was going to come in and be our saviour -- Now back been suggested be dropped -- average player etc etc
Bock --- How badly missing him when out and would get team running again
and now being called to be dropped and screams because got back in team.

Finally to my point Knights yes how well was he playing end of last season with long goals etc . But now been out virtually all year he missing is our reason for being down bottom and people rating him as our most important player and to be our captain
Yes he is a great player and hope the hell we can keep him but lets keep reality about him and others when not playing. Especially Moran he is average at best

Tippett easily. When he is down, the team is likely to be down. Gives us a target up forward and takes the best 3 defenders.

Goodwin a close second.

I think there is a difference between most important player and player we can least afford to lose to another club.

Most important is more of a current thing, which to me is a toss up betwene a number of players. Least afford to lose is more looking towards the future, and I would have Dangerfield in that list for sure.

I looked at it as such, looking at our list, with everyone up and firing, who would be most vital to our success? I straight away looked towards the back threesome of Rutten Bock and Johncock because theyve shown from 2005 to be important players and a team within a team down there. I almost went for Bock, because his injuries have cost us this year, but then thought that the small forward can often hurt us, and Stiffy is about the only successful bloke we have for that role, plus he adds a lot of drive from the back line. We also missed him a lot in the first 3 rounds this year.

PS Vader, in your OP, Thompson missed round 8 v NM !:o

Interesting thread. I'm in the Thompson party, he is the glue of the Adelaide midfield and you can always rely on him putting in 110% in every game. In short, he makea the world go round.

Thompson, followed closely by Johncock and Rutten.
Tippett is also important because he takes the opposition's full back and is usually hard to match up on. he also takes opposition attention away from Walker, which is a huge bonus.

Griff is a good decent ruckman (our most natural ruckman on the list actually), but he's not like one of the great rucks in the comp or anything.

Doh! :o

Same point applies though.

You might want to read the OP a little more closely.;)

Of the options, I'd say Thompson. He's able to get us the ball just so often, and while his disposal can be iffy on occasions, he is definately important for our midfield and the leadership he creates.

I'll also throw Otten into the hat. Last year he was an absolute breakout star, being able to help Johncock off half back, and also be able to get into the midfield and kick a goal (that ripper against Freo I believe last year was fantastic). I'd say of all the players injured, we've missed him the most, as he was certainly an X-Factor last year. Whether he is able to do that next year remains to be seen, but I sure as hell hope he can return strong.

Kurtly Tippett. On the weekend when I heard he was a possible late withdrawal, I literally shitted in my pants (not really:p). When he is out, we are a far less potent side.

Nathan Bock. I don't think it's any coincidence that we have both stagnated as an attacking team this season and also slid backwards in terms of our defense. We need a fit Nathan Bock and the lack of exactly that has been a big factor in our lacklustre year in my opinion.

I think you're spot on here cmndstab.

Griffen although he might not be a super star you need 2 quality ruckmen in your side to win finals and it's no coincidence we started winning consecutive games when griffen came into the side

You cannot just say one player. Newtons 3rd law of motions says “every action had an equal or opposite reaction therefore this means that whenever a first body exerts a force on a second body, the second body exerts a force” so in theory, if you say Bernie Vince is our most influential player and Ivan Maric or Jonathon Griffin don’t fire in the ruck, it makes it so much easier for his negative players to control his influence. So for Vince’s actions to become a positive, Maric and Griffin have to be a positive force as well.

If you say Kurt Tippett is our positive force then the midfield has to be a positive force to allow that original force to prosper. If they are having a bad day or being lazy around the clearances, he influences will be affected therefore that opposite reaction will occur.

So, i don’t think you can just say one player.
